Important Update from Nightfall Games

Posted by Chris 'Shep' Shepperson

As of 22/06/2018 Nightfall Games Ltd (NFG) have terminated the license agreement with Daruma Productions Ltd for use of SLA material. Going forward NFG will work in association with Word Forge Games (WFG) to look at how best to complete and fulfill the Kickstarter. Be advised that at this time the SLA Industries: Cannibal Sector 1 Kickstarter campaign has no available funds. As such, fulfillment will be as a result of further investment from NFG and WFG. Drauma Productions Ltd is the company that still owns the Kickstarter debt, and although we have tried to purchase that debt, it has not been possible.

That’s the formal statement... but what does that mean to you, the backer? Well simply put, things have not worked out as planned. The Kickstarter dream that Daruma Productions Ltd pushed for was not realised. Exactly how and what went wrong we really can’t say at this point, but we at Nightfall Games recognise that SLA Industries needs to come out on top… and the game needs to be in your hands. As such, Nightfall Games has revoked the license that allowed the SLA Industries world and setting to be used by Daruma Productions Ltd and has formed a new relationship with Word Forge Games. WFG have a huge amount of experience in producing miniatures and miniature games and are working alongside us to consolidate what already exists for SLA Industries: Cannibal Sector 1, what is possible to finish off and what we can do get the game into your hands.

As you’ve probably seen on Facebook, work on the book, the main focus of the Kickstarter, has been ongoing in spite of setbacks. WFG has obtained the majority of the Daruma Productions Ltd SLA Industries stock (in lieu of payment for unpaid debt) and we are in a good place to resume the work on the Kickstarter once all of the legal crossed Ts and dotted Is have been dealt with.

WFG will be completing a stock take during the next 2 weeks and once we know exactly what there is, we will share with you all and explain our plans in further detail. We are also in discussions over certain assets, which we expect resolution of in the same period.

We know you have not been treated as you (or we) would like to have been and we know this situation is far from ideal (believe us when we say, we wish this had played out differently), but please bear with us while we work out the details and figure out how best to do right by all of you awesome people that supported the campaign. We shall keep you updated as much as we can going forward – expect frequent updates and lots of work by the Nightfall team.

Our heartfelt thanks, apologies and respect,

Nightfall Games

Hi guys, not to be "that guy", but it's been two weeks, which is the timescale the admin gave for an update. Some people might get a wee bit shirty if you keep us hanging.
      Just saying... ;)

    2. Word Forge Games on

Please read this (we posted this 7 days ago, but not sure the recent posters had seen it):

Word Forge Limited acquired the ‘SLA CS1 stock’, which we were informed was the entirety of the available ‘SLA CS1 Stock’, at the beginning of June 2018. This was made up of stock produced and sold by Word Forge to Daruma but recovered under a retention of title for non-payment along with stock which was purchased by Word Forge from Daruma in full agreement between the Daruma and Word Forge Limited representatives. WFG obtained both inventories with the intention of fulfilling this Kickstarter and further developing the SLA franchise with its creators.

Due to more recent developments, these inventories are currently quarantined within Word Forge Limited’s warehouse until there is clarity on the legal ownership of this stock. Once this is clarified, Word Forge Limited will either continue with its plans or follow the directions of Daruma’s representatives.

We are allowed on KS (and this KS)...we backed it all those months ago (just like you). Daruma/Nightfall have the login codes, they are the companies that bought us all this KS and who, I am sure, will update us backers as soon as they can.

    4. Daniel West on

      So ...

If Word Forge presumably aren't allowed to do anything on KS ...

And Daruma isn't able to go on KS (with the presumed illegal password change) ...

Who's going to update us now?

Seems like the comment from Daruma about Word Forge not being allowed to do anything on KS is true....let’s see what else comes out from under the rocks.

      Hi all,

Apologies for radio silence since posting the update. I have not been deliberately avoiding answering questions, rather waiting to find out exactly what was happening so it was clear what I could say as a representative of Nightfall Games.

Unfortunately, due to more recent developments I will have to step away from this project and thus will be removed as a collaborator following this post, with a view to being reinstated here once the current hurdles are overcome.

Please expect further announcements from Daruma Productions and/or Nightfall Games shortly.

Can we have some clarity on how the funds were used?

By the way could you close the pre-order link, it seems very useless right now.

    11. Daniel West on

Despite being an early SLA fan I never have had much trust in the business directions that have been taken over the past couple of decades. Lots of ideas and lots of show with unreliable timetables, underestimated workloads and sporadic releases.

That said, the RPG itself remains a rare unrefined gem.

I see no reason to get mad or upset over my investment in the KS, so far the process more or less lived up to my expectations (not my hopes though). It would be nice if some things get salvaged from all this so that the backers get something in return for their money and trust.

And hopefully for SLA Industries it can shrug off another blow to its reputation.

Tbh based on what was said on Facebook, the corroborating details on Companies House, and the general overall evasiveness that seems to be going on I really have no confidence in anybody involved in this fiasco.

I wouldn't be surprised if the finished product still appears in one form or another, but I'll be amazed if that form involves any of us backers seeing anything. Very sad state of affairs. At least it's going to make a fun anecdote.

If I get something I will count myself lucky but everyone involved in the running of the KS will be on my avoid list from now on, both on KS and at retail.

Truly sad state of affairs and I’m afraid that it feels no one has acted with integrity in this

    14. Dan on

Using companies house to look at details combined with Facebook posts means this all stinks of dishonesty.

    15. Sebastien Boisvert on

I’m rally saddened by this new. I was hoping to at least recieve the rules, the books some kinks and maybe some miniature, but right now it’ll surely be nothing. Having read both sides of the story, I must concur that both company will have to chose between what’s legal and what’s right. Unfortunatly the legal system tend to destroy anything involving money making more wrong than right.

The customer service and quality of production of Daruma production was really shoddy. I bought T-Shirts in 1$ stores that had better fabrics and better prints. And seeing that much stuff given in a 40 000 euro campaing was really too generous to be true. (An average miniature game goes in the hundred of thousands of dollars each campain) In fact it was too good to be true as we see it right now.

I just hope that things will work out eventually. I keep hope on the rulebooks that will get out one way or another, hopefull free and printed on premium paper for the backers. As for the miniatures, i’ll expect them when I see them.

For the records I’m 100% behind Dave and Jared. They kept the game alive for more time than was possible in my point of view (they must be Necro-Designers). If there’s a way to keep Sla Industries alive they’ll find it. For the rest lets hope that the spirit of Mr. Slayer will make a miracle happen and give us some stuff so we’ve not lost everything.

      Still a Sla Industries fan.

How can you say that when Daruma ran the Kickstarter and they are going into Receivership?
I have yet to see anything from this and have £220 invested in it with my friend.

    17. Chris 'Shep' Shepperson Collaborator on

@Anthony Porter - A few people got a few bits as we understand it. A number of the minis are cast, others have the moulds to cast them from and others have not yet been created. We are in the process of pricing together what we have and who needs what (and how soon we can get those things into peoples hands).

@Steve Mellan - I understand that you're angry, but I'm not here trying to lie to anyone. Our statement made in this update is the focus of Nightfall Games right now. I know there is lots of emotional posting happening about this working relationship but I am only interested in one thing. Doing what we can to deliver what Daruma promised. I appreciate that what I say is of little interest to you, but I am here, I am listening and Nightfall Games are trying to solve this.

      @Chuck Dee & @Andy Thomas - Thanks guys.

Trying to piecemeal everything and assign blame at this point isn't going to get us anything but a load of toxic mess. I'd suggest waiting until we hear next from them after they've sorted this morass. After all, righteous indignation has no expiration date. At least that's my take on it.

    20. Steve Mellan

The partnership between Word Forge Games and Nightfall has nothing to do with Daruma Productions who ran this campaign. This is a new partnership that we (the license holders) have put together so we can do right by the people that supported Daruma and this campaign.

A total falshood and lie, more inaccuracies from people who have at one time straddled more than one of the above companies and still do, yeah trust us to fully investigate to the backers satisfaction what WE did before .

Well I think I decided a year ago I had lost my money and would see a thing from this project despite all the noises from Daruma.

      Did anyone ever get anything?

    24. Chris 'Shep' Shepperson Collaborator on

@Simon Ryves-Webb - As soon as we know anything we'll let backers know.

    25. Chris 'Shep' Shepperson Collaborator on

@Dad-R-Cubed-1 - Thanks for sticking with us.

@Iain Wilson - As the update states above, currently we are trying to work out exactly what we have. Word Forge Games are in receipt of all the existing stock and are working out what we have and what we can produce currently. As soon as we know we'll let backers know. Please bear with us while we get everything in order. Its important that know the exact state of things so we can be as accurate as possible and not give you half the facts. Of course, we want this game out there as much as you do, so our goal is to fulfil everything, but until we have been through this process we can't be certain.

What I can promise is that we'll stay in communication and nail this down ASAP. Thanks!

    26. Iain Wilson on

Reading the Facebook page I doubt any of us are going to get anything. This all has a distinct air of shenanigans about it.

    27. Simon Ryves-Webb on

      Hi
I also pledged for the Mantic scenic bundle will this part of the pkedge be honoured.

    28. Iain Wilson on

Can we have an update on what’s completed, what’s outstanding and what we’re likely to receive. I’m assuming with the money gone (and as a backer I’d like to know “...on what?”) that we will not be receiving delivery of everything we’ve backed?

    29. Dad-R-Cubed-1 on

Very sad as the minis that I have received have been good and I have enjoyed playing the Beta. I am into this £110 plus £50 pre-order of the cannibals. If nightfall can get the stock I will keep buying more SLA to paint and play with too. For now though I will mentally write off the money. I’ve dwelt on “lost” kickstarters in the past and it’s not worth the time. I hope Nightfall can sort this out as SLA, both RPG and Skirmish has huge amounts of life in it. Good luck chaps.

    30. Chris 'Shep' Shepperson Collaborator on

@Venjack - Dave has (at the last count) 18 art pieces left to complete. So close. He and Jared are so focused on completing that (utterly huge) book that I think it's going to take nuclear war to stop them finishing it.

@Cutter Goode - The new NIN record rocks. Fact.

    31. Cutter Goode on

If it wasn't for the fact a new Nine Inch Nails album dropped today and it's the start of Q-Con I might be really pissed off. At least I'll have a 'funny story' to tell the lads tomorrow when we sit down to play.

Shep - I'll be happy to; where should I contact you? Daruma is making noises over on facebook that you're not supposed to have access to the KickStarter account, so... not sure how to contact you correctly.

    37. Chris 'Shep' Shepperson Collaborator on

@Christine Moore - At the point we're still unsure about exactly what exists and what doesn't in terms of renders, models etc. All I can say is that we obviously want to honour everything, but at this stage we can't be sure, though early indications from WFG look good.

As soon as we know more and can be more specific, we'll update you all.

I very much doubt you can meet my expectations because all I want to do is get a refund for the substantial amount I invested and I would be happy not to hear anything about SLA Industries again, let you try ? What choice do I have Shep, as a backer all of us asked and asked and asked was everything ok, because my kickstarter sense was tingling and all we got was bollox after lies after rubbish and now all of our fears have become real and we have no legal recourse to do anything and it stinks, so I am sorry but I have little hope of our KS becoming a reality as you quote "the money has all gone" so its yet another KS that despite warning signs, egged its backers on beyond the timescale at which they could legally force the issue, and KS dont give a crap cos they have their cut and ahve written flowery legalese to cover their asses.I truly hope you succeed, of course i do, but considerable experience with KS failures of this type just makes me sickened I ever bothered.

@Pneusodym - We will get you your product. Word Forge Games have received all of the existing stock and are currently preparing to stock take this. We'll piece everything together (please give us time to do this) once we know what stock there is, what has been cast and what we have the capacity to cast more of!

If you can send us a PM with the details we'll have reference when we get to that point and we can contact you should we need more info.

I had my reservations about Daruma after I had issues with them with other products. Sorry to hear this KS has not worked and hope something can be salvaged for the backers. Good luck to NFG and WFG to sort out this mess. Please keep us updated as often as possible

    43. Chris 'Shep' Shepperson Collaborator on

@Steve Mellan. This campaign was run by Daruma Productions Ltd using the license for SLA Industries. We have stepped back in to bring things back on track and ensure you guys get what you came here for. I think I can speak for us all when I say I'm deeply saddened that you feel like you have been 'conned'. We are working hard to prove to backers that we really care about SLA Industries and the fans of the game. The partnership between Word Forge Games and Nightfall has nothing to do with Daruma Productions who ran this campaign. This is a new partnership that we (the license holders) have put together so we can do right by the people that supported Daruma and this campaign.

I hope we can meet your expectations, or that you'll at least let us try.

I have backed a lot of Kickstarters. And I knew the red flags to look out for. And I saw a lot of them here and backed in spite of this because of the SLA Industries name and my experience with Nightfall. I've watched in dismay as things have gone off the rails here and chalked it up to the fact that I had only my own optimism to blame. Thank you for picking up the ball, recognizing and respecting the trust put in your name, and trying to make it right. I know it's a difficult situation, but I maintain hope that it will be resolved in a satisfactory way with you back at the helm.

    49. Art Steventon on

Whilst this may look like the sky has fallen in, I think it’s a positive move.
I’ve dealt with WFG on a few of their own Kickstarters, and trust them as one of the ‘good guys’ - they’re honest with timescales and open about any issues or delays.

What I won’t be doing, and would ask my fellow backers to not do, is give Nightfall or WFG a hard time for the sins of Daruma - WFG are here to save our campaign, not sink it.

Let’s give them time, time to see what the damage really is, and what can be saved, and support them moving forward so we still have a game!
