Stretch goal unlocked!

As our funding total for SEGA Pop-Up: Arcade History has exceeded £50,000, a sixth pop-up cabinet – the 1988 kart racer Power Drift – will be added to the book.

***

In the early 1980s, Yu Suzuki, a young videogame developer working at SEGA developed a series of groundbreaking arcade games – physically impressive, custom-built cabinets that utilised motion control, hydraulics and frenetic pseudo-3D visuals. These games provided players with immersive, heart-pounding simulations of motorcycle racing, air-to-air combat, and high speed driving.

These games signalled Suzuki’s emergence as a talented innovator – he would eventually go on to develop the celebrated Shenmue series – and cemented SEGA’s place as a leading force in the crowded and competitive arcade game industry.

Nicknamed ‘taikan’ or ‘body sensation’ games, these cabinets remain high water marks for the once-vibrant arcade game scene – seductive, gaudy fusions of industrial design and 1980s graphic art.

The book

SEGA Arcade: Pop-Up History presents five of the most iconic 'body sensation' cabinets – Hang-On, Space Harrier, OutRun, After BurnerThunder Blade and Power Drift – in a suitably innovative form: as dazzling pop-up paper sculptures.

Each model will be accompanied by schematics, game artwork and historical context from Guardian games writer and best-selling novelist, Keith Stuart.

Stuart will be also conducting an exclusive interview with Yu Suzuki for SEGA Arcade: Pop-Up History, offering first hand insight into the development of these groundbreaking games and the birth of the taikan cabinet phenomenon.

Risks and challenges

This is our first pop-up project, so we have taken our time to develop and prototype the project over a 12 month period, with careful direction and instruction from project paper engineer Helen Friel. We're in good hands as Helen has been closely involved with several high profile pop-up publications before – as a result, we expect this project to go smoothly.

We intend to act carefully as we develop the book, ensuring every model is throughly considered and tested. As always, we'll communicate any issues or delays immediately to backers via our project updates.
