INTERNATIONAL BACKERS AND SHIPPING (UPDATE 4/26):
- If you have already backed the project, I will honor your pledges and ship to you if the project is successfully funded. If you haven't backed the project yet, and are not in the US, please read the following:
- If you would like to pledge, I will need you to pay for the international shipping costs. I just ask that you send me your address to get a shipping estimate that I will need you to pay AFTER the project ends. This way the shipping costs are not being tallied toward the funding total and skewing the projects progress. Thanks!
The rate at which the project is being funded has given me some options if I reach these NEW goals. Like I said in the original page, I fully intend to put any and all amount of funding over the initial goal back into the comic. I have quite a few ideas, and I have come up with a few to share, they are listed below:
- $4600: A new reward level would be created to include a T-shirt along with a copy of the comic and the 11x17 print. Also, T-shirts would be sent to everyone already pledging OVER $50! ADDED 4/16!!!
- $4800: I would commission a professional artist to do an original cover for the comic. This would be used as the standard cover for all copies of the comic. WE MADE IT!!! 4/26!
- $4900: I would add the digital concept and sketches to the print copy of the comic instead of just being sent out as a PDF email. This way the comic would have more value packed in it's pages. WE MADE IT!!! 4/26!
- $5300: I would include a short, original epilogue that would give speaking roles to all the backers being drawn into the comic and would give additional pages to the comic! This would add another clever twist to the ending, but I can only do this with your help. WE MADE IT ON 5/4!!!
- $5800: I will have enough money to increase my printing run and produce a 'Regular' edition without the concepts and sketches, not signed or numbered and be able to ship to more comic shops. I would include a regular edition along with all pledges over $15 along with your super limited signed and numbered, bonus sized 1st editions. Comic shops backing me would also get extra quantities. MADE IT, 5/6!!!!
- $XXXX Everything else I earn will continue to help the book. I will be able to order more copies of the comic, ship to more comic shops and share my story with more and more people! Thank you everyone for backing this book, I can't wait to share the completed comic with you!
WHAT IS GODDAMMIT BABY, THIS IS SOUL?
'Goddammit Baby, This is Soul!' is an original comic book by me, Darren Hupke. It is a single issue, 22 page story (or longer if we hit $5300!!!). This story is my first step in writing comics. The concept came out of a personal challenge to create a single story that can be told in one issue and get the ball rolling for other concepts and stories I have. I didn't want to dive in and attempt a larger story and fail. I don't want to leave anything incomplete and this is the perfect release to see realized from a concept and script into a fully completed comic.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
- Penciled, inked and colored by Jean-Paul Deshong
We all live our lives here on Earth, but what happens after we die? Do we all go to Heaven together? What is 'down there'? This story shows us what happens to two people after they pass and their journey to Heaven. Once they get there, they find out getting in isn't as easy as they thought it would be. Turns out, Heaven is nearly full and only has room for one of them to get in. How do these two do-gooders figure out who will get in and who will have to go to the only other option, Hell? Well, the only logical way possible, of course. A fight to the death (second death?) in the HOLY-DOME! Action ensues, and a good time is had by all… except one person, but hey, it's good enough, right?
WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR?
The goal is $4270, but what does that go towards? I wrote this story all on my own, in my free time, but I cannot draw. I am so bad I am LEGALLY required to never handle a pencil and paper at the same time. It's difficult to get around sometimes, but I manage.
So first, the artist, Jean-Paul Deshong, needs to be paid! He has a professional page rate that I am covering with the fund, and he deserves it. He has a published work history on major titles like Grimm Fairy Tales and Hack/Slash, so I feel he is worth his rate, and more.
Now, even though Jean-Paul's art looks great WITHOUT color, this book needs to live! So I am asking that he ALSO color the book. He, of course, needs to make a living from putting all his time into the book, and since I retired from coloring after the Crayola incident of '98, I need his hands. The fund would be going towards his rate.
Next, a comic can only be so good with just images. It need's my words to go along with it and tell the story. This is where Taylor Esposito comes in. He's the one who is handling all the lettering duties, and wouldn't you know it, he doesn't do it for free. For his professionalism, he is receiving a portion of this fund to help finish this comic and bring it all to life.
Finally, your pledges earn you rewards. We'll get to those later, but I want to do something for everyone helping me out, and that costs a little money as well. The last bit will cover costs to produce the rewards and make this all worth it for everyone involved.
Without you I would have nothing but a legal notice preventing me from drawing and a lot of text and files on my computer with no chance of seeing the creative light of day! This goal takes care of producing the story 100% and paying all the others involved with it's creation. I am earning $0 here personally and any amount I receive OVER my goal will be put back into making this comic even better with extra rewards, a larger 1st print run, and an increased quality in the overall project. I promise you that!

WHO AM I?
I am Darren Hupke, that's who I am. I am 25 years old and I live in Anaheim, CA. I wrote this story and had the drive to attempt to put it all together. I am not a writing professional and this would be my first official comic. I don't want that to sound like a warning and scare you away. We all have to start somewhere and I am here now! I have always had a passion to create stories and concepts since I was 9 and used my grandpa's video camera to make horror films with my friends. I pick up musical instruments and have played in bands, and have concepted countless game ideas with friends on many late nights as a child.
I became a store manager for GameStop and worked for the company for about 7 years total, but that creative passion was screaming at me in the back of my mind. I decided to leave GameStop and started going to school for audio production. I began working part-time at a comic book shop, Beach Ball Comics, at the same time. It is a great place to work while going to school and being on the inside of a comic shop really drove me to create some comics. Eventually I took over the duties of the Store Manager and help the owner with running the shop. My drive and professionalism was noticed and I love being a part of the leadership team.
I felt that the creation of comics didn't need large budgets or teams and it was a project that I could attempt to share my ideas. Finding like minded, and driven, individuals can be difficult locally, but after speaking with creators at the shop during events and signings, I was encouraged to keep at it. Nathan Edmondson asked me WHY I wanted to create comics. I told him it was more than just a hobby I had and I felt that I could, and wanted, to do more. Creating stories and worlds then visually sharing them is something that gets me excited and something I want to do. Seeing Robert Kirkman, Josh Fialkov, Brian Bucceletto and more come in to the store and talking with them has solidified my drive to do this. They all work and speak comics because its something they enjoy doing. They are not doing it to be rich, they are doing it because its rewarding, and things tend to work out for people with this passion.
I was able to meet Kyle Higgins at the shop during a signing with him... he almost made me want to leave comics forever, but he had heart. Plus, as a writer, he picked up a pen and sketched like a mad man. So, half thanks to the great Kyle! (I am kidding here, I just want to make sure that's clear. Kyle was a super nice guy and was part of a great night at a great signing!)
My goal in life is to get into a career in a creative field doing audio production, then using my free time to create more of anything and everything. Writing and developing ideas and stories into comics and films on my own and sharing them with anyone and everyone who'll read them or listen. The first step is to get this book finished and move on to the next. I have many, and hopefully the stories I have will be easier to produce as time goes on and people hear my name.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?
Well, for starters, you get to help me create and produce my very own comic book! That isn't as exciting for you as it is for me, huh? Well, I am working on that…
As you can see here on the right, I have many options. These include basic support and a PDF of the comic all the way up to having your own likeness drawn into the comic as the main character!
In between there you have the option to be in the comic through other characters, limited signed and numbered editions of the comic itself, 11x17 limited prints, your information on a personalized 'Thank You' page, and more. As the project receives funding, and if it becomes OVERFUNDED, I will enhance all the reward tiers with bonus and new reward levels. I have ideas for stickers and T-Shirts among other things. The amount listed to be successful is the minimum, anything beyond will only help the book and this project as a whole.
I tried to come up with something for everyone, so hopefully there is a level you are happy with and you want to support this project!
WHAT IS THE BIGGER PICTURE HERE?
This comic is more than just a single comic, to me. After the book is finished, I plan to send it out to publishers and move forward trying to getting a wide release. If that doesn't pan out, I plan to self produce more copies down the road and sell them to comic shops directly. These will NOT be the limited versions you get in this Kickstarter. Your copies will be SUPER limited first ever printings.
I want to use this to get my name out there and a chance for people to see what I can offer. I have many more ideas and more come every day, so this opportunity will help me continue down the path of a comic creator and hopefully open more doors for my future stories. It is a hobby of mine, but I still treat it like it was a full time job and my passion to see this through and my future stories would benefit from this success. Thank you for reading and considering funding, and if you decided to participate in this fund, I would be eternally grateful. Thanks for your time! THANK YOU FOR ANY AND ALL SUPPORT!!!
These shops have shown me support early on, so I want to extend a big 'THANK YOU' and if you live in the area of these shops, I must biasedly suggest you visit them!
