Fae Nightmares is modern Urban Fantasy Role Playing Game with a North American Twist for the Savage Worlds system.
Enter into a shadow war between two Fae Courts in your own city, as you’re thrown headlong into a world of extremes and contradiction where you have to adapt to a new reality or perish. Play characters who are becoming something less human and more like the beings found in stories—the fae, the monsters, the gods, and everything in between.
Fae Nightmares is a Modern Urban Fantasy setting for the Savage Worlds system, which nods to the genre’s roots in detective and horror stories. With the setting being a modern North American-esq city, Arden, we decided to focus on local stories. There are still Celtic Fae, as North America does have a strong European influence, but we also pulled from Native American stories, urban myths, and lumberjack tall tales. And besides, we have some things that are ridiculously cool and don’t get enough play.
Despite the large city, there’s a small community feel in the game as the number of Fae and Nightmares measure in the hundreds. This, and the shape-shifting nature of many characters, have contributed to the setting being particularly gender neutral, and queer & LGBT friendly. With the smaller “relevant” populations there are some new social mechanics, notably the effect of status within the courts on interactions, and the trickery skill. Both of which reflect features heavily found in both Celtic Fairy Tales and Native American stories.
We have 4 flexible character "races", 5 arcane backgrounds, and edges that focus on your character’s progression into something supernatural. For the GM we have 2 plot point campaigns, a plethora of savage tales, location based encounters, and a selection of magical items. In addition, we have equipment, game and Fae personality generators. In the game generators, we not only have your usual combat games, but also social and investigative focused tables.
We’ve put a lot of work into this book, both the world, and making sure that everything mechanical we added was both necessary and reflected the setting. Over the course of a year, we’ve designed the world and run two playtest campaigns. We’re done most of the writing, the majority of the work left is in paring down and cleaning up the fluff, organizing and stating out the bestiary, and cleaning up changes to a few mechanics. We have a clear goal of what these will be like, but what we really need help with is art, editing, and production costs.
This is where you come in. Our goal is to get the best possible product into your hands. Our minimum goal allows us to commission art for the book, pay for an editor to go over it, and cover the costs of shipping and production of minimal books. At our initial goal we’ll be producing a POD version of the book, with about 30 pictures, but our initial stretch goals work towards commissioning more, and better, art, and a higher quality book with offset printing. Our secondary goal is to produce the player’s guide we want; organized to reflect the varying levels of knowledge PCs may have of the world, with expanded archetypes for pick-up games or use as NPCs, and actual-play examples of the new mechanics.
We’re hoping you’ll like this world as much as we do, and we’re looking forward to your feedback!
We have some sample pages of Fae Nightmares up, and If you’d like to see more of our work, check out issues 6, 8 and 9 of Savage Insider, where we wrote the “Halloween Jack and Jill”, “Corroders”, and “Mask Peddler” pieces.
Thanks! Mariah and Brett
Dark Smile Games.
Fae Nightmares is an officially licensed Savage Worlds setting, and requires the Savage Worlds Deluxe book to play (see FAQ).
Our minimum goal enables us to commission art for the book, pay an editor, and to get the product to you! This will be a softcover, color, POD book.
at this goal we can afford to put more custom art in the book.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
This is our first published RPG, so its possible there's a roadblock we're missing, however, we've done a lot of research, are consulting with people with previous Kickstarter experience, and working with an established company for printing, so hopefully these are minimized. In addition, we're keeping the project as simple as possible.
The two of us are the writing and production team, so if something drastic happens it will slow us down, though we've accounted time for this. However, it also means we don't have to worry about outside writers flaking on us or not meeting their deadlines! Most of the book is written, and just needs cleanup, and can easily be worked on by just one of us if necessary. All the files are backed up on an external drive and on the cloud regularly, so chances of data loss are small.
The art is being done by other people, so any delays there will delay the project, if they exceed the expected lag time. Should this get extreme it is possible for Mariah, one of the writers, to also do illustrations for the book, though this would slow us down.
Costs could go up again. However, we've budged for possible increases, and we're committed to getting the product to you.
While this project is using Canadian dollars, most of it will be spent in USD. We've built in a bit of "wiggle room" to account for fluctuations in exchange rates. Though, they haven’t changed too much in the last little while, and projections stay well within a reasonable range.
We’re using Amazon’s fulfillment service; this actually is helping us keep the shipping costs down. However, it means the shipping is a bit peculiar. If you’re in the contiguous US states, shipping is included. Please add $10 if you're in Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico or a US Territory. Those of you in “Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East” please add $14 to your order. Despite our location and best efforts, we have to charge those in Canada. Please add $10 to your order—unless you arrange with us to pick up your copies in person in Toronto. The shipping charge is once per order, not per item.
If you're ordering the Card Deck Add Ons, there are shipped separately, and so there is an additional shipping charge. This is once per order, not per deck, all decks after the first have included shipping. If you’re in the continental US please add $5. If you’re in Canada or non-continental US, please add $10, All other locations that USPS can deliver to, please add $15. If you can arrange for in-person pick up, don’t add shipping.
To participate in these tiers you’ll need to own the copyright on the material submitted and grant us publishing rights for this and any future publications as well as the rights to produce derivative works of the material. We will be producing the art for the character or location, and book. Dark Smile Games reserves the right to refuse material for any reason, including but not limited to: lewd or unpublishable content, questionable copyright infringement, and poor fit with the setting. We will work with you to resolve any problems we can.
For the "Crown Knight", "Honor Guard", and "Poison Rose" tiers you may also choose the type of Fae portrayed and provide a short description for inclusion the book, along with any reference images you would like your Fae to look similar to. For the "Treacherous Blade" tier, much of this information is directly tied into the campaign, and so we will require much more input into the description than with the other specialty tiers--this Fae is a Glashtyn, a type of Waterhorse capable of taking on a humanoid form. Any reference material provided should be human or equine. Note that though Glashtyns are traditionally male, this is not a requirement.
The "Crown Knight" and "Poison Rose" tiers are for characters that are part of the same faction as the PCs, The Court of Roses, whereas the "Honor Guard" and "Treacherous Blade" tiers are for characters that are part of the enemy faction, the Court of Blades.
If you are at all unsure, please contact us with regards to the descriptions you'd like included, before the Kickstarter closes so we can be sure everyone is on the same page.
We've had a couple people mention this problem. Contact us directly and we'll figure something out (through Kickstarter, or info@DarkSmileGames.com).
Savage Worlds Deluxe is an RPG game engine published by Pinnacle Entertainment that is designed to be used with many settings. It can be purchased through Pinnacle Entertainment directly, and elsewhere, and the “test drive” rules are available for free download.
Fae Nightmares requires the use of these rules to play.

The Core Book contains all the information needed to play and run a game of Fae Nightmares that is not in the Savage Worlds Deluxe book--Character generation, setting information, new mechanics, bestiary, the two campaigns and savage tales (short games designed to be inserted into overarching campaigns).
The Player's Guide contains information and options for character generation, and some setting information, limited to things that are required for the players or things the characters would know. The Player's Guide does not contain enough information to run a game from it alone. Currently, the Player's Guide does not contain any information that is not in the Core Book
The most immediately apparent difference is with the Fae—there’s a few major differences here.
The Fae world is, for the most part, not segregated from the Mortal world and so you’ll be interacting with them directly, though there are more Nightmares than Fae.
These Fae are modernized, they’re not antiquated throwbacks to the Victorian or earlier periods. They’re more stable and less whimsical, insane, or sadistic. Those individuals do exist, but it’s not a universal racial trait. They do however have a potentially infinite lifespan, so their point of reference is different. Interactions with the Fae can be positive as well as negative or chaotic.
The Fae don’t group themselves by Seelie or Uneelie, this is a human-centric interpretation of the different Fae Court cultures. Of course, you’re also not playing a human, you’re playing a Nightmare, someone who is in a transition zone, changing from human to Fae; unless you want to be a Sighted. Either way you are a part of one of the Fae Courts. The emphasis on honor and community of many Celtic and Native American tales is strongly brought into the world through both major courts’ cultures. For the Nightmares this is also re-enforced strongly, those who don’t find a “Pack” don’t survive long.
The Fae we reference are researched heavily, and based on the people and creatures of the lore we pull from. For example: we have the Sidhee, essentially a Celtic noble-class Fae; the Jackalope and Wangedoodle from lumberjack tall tales; Basket Woman, a cannibalistic giantess from Native American stories; from the modern contingent we have the monster-under-the-bed; and there’s plenty more.
