About

Hi, I'm Brian Hindt, aka "Hoop" on the flashlight forums. I'm a professional machinist and flashlight enthusiast, mostly known for making some fancy aftermarket copper heatsinks

I'd like to introduce my flashlight company: DARKSIDE ILLUMINATION, LLC. The plan is to create unique, high quality lighting products catering to enthusiasts and professionals. I will be machining and assembling each of the lights myself and using domestically produced components where possible.

The NYMPH is Darkside's first product offering. It's a miniature high output flashlight designed for pocket carry and is among the smallest and brightest 10440 flashlights ever made. 

Being a "twisty," this light is more than 15mm [.59"] shorter than most switch operated 10440 lights. 

The aluminum body features a unique sinusoidal knurl pattern which is eye catching and functional. It is type III hard anodized to a thickness of .001" external buildup.

 The miniature pocket clips are flame heated and bent one at a time out of Grade 5 alloy Titanium, and permanently affixed into a slot in the head. Being on the head of the light rather than the tail, the light can be clipped onto the brim of a hat and used as a headlamp. Body knurling under the clip helps it to grip clothing very well. 

The LED is a 90+ CRI, NICHIA 219C with 4000K color temperature, a favorite among flashlight enthusiasts. It produces a pleasant and slightly "warm" light.

The TIR optic is a lightly diffused spot optic with a good balance of flood and throw.

The heatsink is made from solid copper for optimal thermal and electrical performance.  The LED is reflowed onto a copper direct-thermal-path mcpcb.

The electrical connectors are of the highest quality, with a silver plated beryllium copper negative spring, and a pure nickel positive contact terminal.

The dual channel driver utilizes a PWM controlled constant current regulator for steady and precise output of the lower modes, and a PWM controlled FET to vary the brightness of the high modes. The PWM frequency is very high so no flickering or noise effects occur. 

The driver features reverse polarity protection as well as low voltage protection which starts to reduce output when the battery is below 3V. Each light is individually calibrated for voltage accuracy. The driver also features external programming headers so it is possible to flash the mcu with different or modified firmware. A programming clip will be available at a later date for those intrepid enthusiasts who wish to reflash the mcu. 

The NYMPH offers SIX MODES, + battery check: 

  • 1: ~.8 lumen! (moon) [50+ hours]
  • 2: 9 lumens (low 2) [9 hours, 10 minutes] 
  • 3: 37 lumens (medium 1) [2 hours, 23 minutes] 
  • 4: 130 lumens (medium 2) [39 minutes] 
  • 5: 340 lumens (high) [12 minutes] 
  • 6: 700+ TURBO lumens: 1 second soft start from 300 to 700+ then the firmware slowly ramps the output down to around 340 lumens @ 30 seconds. [8+ cycles to 30 seconds] 
  • 7: Battery voltage indicator mode blinks to indicate state of charge. Volts + tenths blinkout. (4.2V is max charge, 3.0V is completely empty)

The light cycles from low to high and always turns on in mode one. The soft start on turbo allows the light to be cycled through to the battery check mode without having to blast turbo to get there. It also serves to pull down the battery voltage a bit before going to 100% FET, which is easier on the LED and battery. The exact mode levels of the production light may be adjusted slightly but the posted numbers are the levels used for the run time tests.

  • MCPCB: Copper, Direct Thermal Path.
  • DRIVER: "DS-10DD+1" 10mm ATtiny13a based FET+1 driver with reverse polarity and low voltage protection. External programming headers allow for in situ mcu flashing. 
  • MODES: 6 modes + battery voltage indicator mode as the 7th mode. L-->H, No memory. 
  • POSITIVE BATTERY CONTACT: High conductivity pure nickel.
  • NEGATIVE BATTERY SPRING: High conductivity silver plated beryllium copper.
  • WEIGHT: 15.5 grams without battery, 24.6 grams with battery.
  • SIZE: 65mm total length including clip protrusion, 15.4mm head diameter.
  • MIN OUTPUT: Approximately .8 lumen.
  • MAX TURBO OUTPUT: 700+ lumens.
  • LEAD FREE SOLDER is used throughout the light.

RECOMMENDED BATTERY AND CHARGER: Battery not included. Use a 10440 IMR chemistry Lithium Ion cell, such as "Efest 10440 V1 IMR 350mAh." 

10440 IMR cells, like most lithium ion cells, should be charged at a maximum rate of 1C, C being the capacity rating of the cell, but 0.5C or less is recommended. In other words, a 350mAh cell should be charged at a rate of .35A or less. Use a charger that offers a .1A or .25A setting, or if using an RC hobby charger with 100mA increments, use a 100mA or 200mA setting. An example of a suitable multi function charger would be the GYRFALCON All-44, set to 4.2V termination and .1A or .25A charge rate. 

CAUTIONS:

  • This flashlight is not a toy and is not for for use by children. 
  • The light should not be operated to temperatures beyond what can be comfortably held in a bare hand. Reduce the output if the light becomes uncomfortably warm.
  • The beams of light generated by modern high output LED flashlights are of sufficient power to cause burns to skin under certain conditions. Do not shine the higher modes directly at skin from very close distances. 
  • Attempting to light paper, etc., on fire may damage the frosted finish of the optic from the reflected heat.
  • It gets really bright. Avoid looking directly at the LED during operation. Do not shine in anyones eyes or face. 

Risks and challenges

The light is at the end of its development, needing only minor adjustments before production. The supply chain is solid. The production machinery is in good condition. After the collection of funds, custom ground carbide form cutters and other tooling will be ordered and jigs and fixtures made for production quantity manufacturing and assembly. After some production bodies are made they will be sent off for anodize. Once the anodize is nailed down, batch production will start. The BeCu springs in the production light will be custom made by a local producer, as will the production driver boards. Each light will be calibrated and tested before shipment. The retail packaging solution and some other final details will be worked out after the NYMPH campaign reaches its goal.
