Thursday, July 28 is our FUN-Raiser at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge.  It features live music from Samantha Farrell, an ooey-gooey all-dessert buffet, a silent auction, and remarks from Emmy award-winning A&E critic Joyce Kulhawik! Our Kickstarter campaign ends after the party, so if you want tickets, please pledge before July 26!

In recent years the Boston area has lost a lot of small- to medium-sized venues...without losing any of its passionate performers and creators. As a result, the demand for quality performing arts venues has gone way up. Our answer to that need is The Thalia.

What's The Thalia?

The Thalia is a small performing arts complex in the Central Square neighborhood of Cambridge.  It consists of a 99-seat professional theatre, a rehearsal hall, and a lounge.

The Theatre:

  • 99 fixed, raked seats
  • A 21’ x 13’ stage
  • 3 dressing rooms and a backstage shower
  • Laundry facilities
  • A large backstage
  • A state-of-the-art Tech Booth and modern lighting grid

The Studio

  • 18' x 24' of usable space
  • Semi-sprung floor
  • Mirrors
  • Adjustable lighting
  • Suitable for classes, rehearsals, table-readings, and even small shows
  • Storage for on-going renters

The Lounge

  • An inviting space for conversation and collaboration
  • Innovative food and beverage offerings
  • Free wi-fi
  • Suitable for select, small performances

Where is it?

The Thalia is on the lower level of 288 Green St., a short walk from the Central Square T station and bus stations, and two doors down from the Central Square parking garage. The building also houses The Havana Club (on the top floor) and is owned by The Greek American Political Club (which may also have something to do with why we picked The Thalia...)

We're located right near the Central Square stop on the red line, about a dozen buses, and four large parking lots.

What are you doing with the money?

The renovations are start-up costs look to be about $200K at a minimum. We've got a lot (but not all) of that covered (thanks to some generous investors and angels), but we don't want to do the minimum. We want to do the maximum. We have a bunch of projects that would just be the icing on Thalia's cake. Each costs about $1500 - $2000; some cost more. The biggest project is the kitchen renovation for the lounge. Our business plan includes ultimately offering some delicious and unusual food and beverages, but we're opening a theatre and not a café. There's a strong possibility that the upgrade to the facilities required to do that will get pushed into Phase II. Consider these our stretch goals.  Here are some of the other things we're like to do if we find we have a little larger budget are:

  • Closed Circuit Video To enable patrons in the lounge and the actors backstage to see what's going on on-stage.
  • Intercom connecting the backstage, the tech booth, and the box office.
  • Free Wi-Fi in the Lounge We want the lounge to become a gathering place for creative types to collaborate on their next great project. In this day and age, that means Wi-Fi. We'd rather just provide it to folks for free rather than charge by the hour.
  • Descriptive Text/Enhanced Audio System for our guests and patrons with diminished sight or hearing capabilities.
  • A Big, Beautiful Sign We'd love to see our name in lights. Wouldn't you?
  • A Digital Poster Display While there's already a place to display posters on the exterior of the building (although it needs a little love), we'd like to go high-tech and replace it with a large screen that can show a rotating display of upcoming shows and events.
Our main entrance is at left. See the space for a fabulous sign and the poster display that needs some love?

Where does the name come from?

Thalia is one of the nine Muses in Greek Mythology.  Her name is pronounced like you're saying "The Liar" with a heavy Boston accent.  She's one of the two associated with theatre.  Since she's the one associated with comedy (as opposed to Melpomene who is the Muse of tragedy), we selected her as our patron.

Risks and challenges

Any time you have to deal with a municipal agency, you run risks – and we need to deal with three: we need to meet with the Cambridge Department of Inspectional Services to get our demolition and building permits; we need to make sure that we're properly zoned; and we'll need to work with the licensing board for our entertainment, food, and drink licenses.

Any time you do construction or demolition, you run risks. Some things can't be anticipated beforehand or aren't discovered until you actually start working.

Fortunately, we have an excellent lawyer who is used to working things out with the City of Cambridge, we have a terrific architect, a top-notch general contractor, and the support of the Cambridge Arts Council and well-known members of the Boston Theatre Community.

We have a 5-year lease with an option to renew for 5 years after that. We're committed to making The Thalia a reality.
