Update 12/01/15: We've reached stretch goal #5!
This is not your average art book.
Five masters of the trade, five compelling myths, all told in over 100 new original paintings on over 200 pages, with specially written accompanying texts in English.
The Dark North – Volume 1 is the first in a planned series of art story books bringing out the immense talent behind the scenes of the extremely successful gaming industry in Scandinavia.
Five of Scandinavia's best illustrators and concept artists have been given free reign; creating new artwork and new myths – or shedding new light on old ones – drawing inspiration from a common ground – "The Dark North".
We will release the book in the first quarter of 2016, and here you have the chance to get hold of the unique Kickstarter Edition or the very limited Dark Edition, none of which will be available in retail.
Unlike the forthcoming paperback retail version, these two Kickstarter hardcover editions will have specially designed dust covers and exclusive cover art, and possibly much more.
With Scandinavia being home to some of the world's most successful gaming studios and traditional roleplaying game studios, we have some of the world's best talent working right around the corner. These artists create the worlds you play in every day, sometimes hundreds of hours, and the time has come to give them their chance to shine. And what better way than giving them the opportunity to create something of their own and putting it in the best quality book money can buy?
Peter Bergting – Internationally acclaimed and awarded artist, illustrator and writer Peter Bergting will bring to The Dark North his most personal work yet; a haunting journey through the mist covered mountains of a post apocalyptic Sweden, truly giving meaning to the words Dark North. So those familiar with Peter's previous work, be prepared for something different. And those of you not - prepare to be amazed.
Henrik Pettersson – Also known as Carnalizer, working as a concept artist at Minecraft developer Mojang, Henrik has lead the concept development for the online card game Scrolls. For the Dark North, Henrik breathes life into a new mythology featuring the Witches of the North. Born in the aftermath of the war between the Norse gods, the Aesir, and the gods that came before, the Vanir, we can assure you that you’ve never seen witches like these before. Ever. His new art promises to be as magical as it is jaw-dropping.
Joakim Ericsson – Currently at acclaimed game studio Starbreeze, classically trained painter-turned-concept artist who is the the only one of the five featured artists to explore The Dark North in the far future. With an immaculate sense of detail and perspective, as well as true mastery of color, Joakim will take us on an epic journey not only forward in time, but to the war-torn Dark North itself.
Lukas Thelin – A name so closely knit to the Swedish world of role-playing games and board games that you can't separate the two. Lukas is the in-house artist – and masterclass cover artist – at games publisher Åskfågeln and his critically acclaimed work can be found in the recently released Western RPG and the Swedish edition of Lone Wolf RPG. Lukas’s art is always striking as it is fueled with drama. As expected, no less so in his imagery for The Dark North, which will take us back to his roots in the far North, and into the darkness of the mind that comes from living in the endless night.
Magnus "Mojo" Olsson – Known to many as the artist behind the iconic, action-filled cover for the Swedish cult RPG Neotech, Magnus “Mojo” Olsson takes The Dark North by the horns and goes straight for the core – the Nordic mythology. Mojo is the first and only among our artists to – among other techniques – physically paint on canvas as opposed to digital painting.
You can't get enough of The Dark North and you want more than the book? Look no further, as we have designed some nice add-ons for you to bring home as well. We are using Backerkit for this campaign, so feel free to upgrade your pledge later.

Risks and challenges
We, the team behind The Dark North, now count six successfully funded Kickstarter campaigns amongst ourselves. We've assembled a project team with many complementing skills. What we're trying to say is - it's our job to manage the risks of the project and get the book out the door.
Of course, stupid men drop bombs. Really, really bad things happen to people. If you've read up on this project, you know that we've had more than our fair share of tragedy leading up to this point.
But - you know what? Here we are. More determined than ever to give you guys the best fantasy art book you could possibly wish for!
But just to summarize the specific risks and challenges that we have prepared to meet, if the s**t hits the proverbial fan.
There are many contributors to this project. Naturally, some key contributor can suffer a personal trauma or be delayed in delivering their contribution for other reasons. This will naturally cause a delay in the production, although this will never stop the project from full realization.
We have invested a substantial amount of time in choosing and negotiating with a printing house with an extensive track record of producing fantastic art books. Nevertheless, things can still go wrong in this process. This will be mitigated by a meticulous contract, clearly stating the qualitative requirements of this project. We ship out only when we are content that the end result meets our high-set expectations. Not before.
Of course, cost could rise. Currency rates fluctuate, pulp prices could explode due to a megalomaniac dictator in "Paperland" doubling the prices. But our project team have set aside funds to cover this. We are dedicated to making The Dark North a long-term project, beyond Volume 1. Therefore, securing the follow-through of this project - no matter the cost - is part of our long-term commitment to the vision of what The Dark North can - and will - become.
