the fall of 2011, Libby Molamphy, Diana Shomstein and B. Vogan set out to write some songs together. Each week they would meet and sing for hours,
carefully working on arrangements and harmonies, and meticulously sculpting each
tune. They had a vision to create the most honest and real compositions
they could muster... songs of love gone wrong and right
A few months later multi-instrumentalist Kory Christian was recruited to help fill out the sound. His careful and precise arrangements formed a perfect balance with Shomstein and Molamphy's lush vocal harmonies. The weekly singing sessions soon became actual band rehearsals.
The group was still in need of a proper name though, and after extensive deliberation Vogan came up with Darkheart. It seemed to fit the music perfectly. With a band name and a full record's worth of songs, the newly christened foursome agreed it was time to record their first album: Sunshine Slowdown.
A few months later Darkheart enlisted their favorite producer Barrett Jones (Laundry Room Studio) to engineer, produce and mix the album. Guest musicians Ben Baier, Julie Baldridge, Mike Cote, Kyle Dewey, Mikkel Lee Meyers, J. Thane and Barrett himself were also recruited to lend their considerable talents to the songs. When Darkheart was done recording and mixing, the album was mastered by the amazing Ed Brooks at RFI CD Mastering.
The group then sought out the brilliant skills of Portland artist Emily Baier, and Seattle photographer Kelsey Clanton to help create the album cover and liner notes. Both Emily and Kelsey did an absolutely fantastic job of capturing the raw emotion of the music in their work.
Darkheart is currently preparing to play some live shows around Seattle in the fall while they promote Sunshine Slowdown. Barrett Jones and Mikkel Lee Meyers have both been officially added to the lineup. By contributing to the band’s Kickstarter campaign, you will not only be rewarded with your very own advanced copy of the album, you will also be helping the group bring their work to fruition.
