***Stretch Goal: £7,500***
OMG..... We have made it to our goal. Thank you so much for all of your amazing support and hard work spreading the news about A Girl Behind Dark Glasses.
We are now going to use the 19 Days to raise funds to enable me to write a sequel and hopefully get it translated into multiple languages. Please continue to support this project. You are amazing!.
An already-written book that is approximately 169 pages long. This campaign is to complete the final edit, design, marketing and distribution of the book in a number of formats including paperback, hardback, audio and eBook.
A Girl Behind Dark Glasses is a story that follows a girl called Jessica, before she became unwell with M.E (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), until she ends up as a seriously affected youngster, living in hospital with tubes keeping her alive.
The only thing that keeps her going is the idea that one day she is going to write about her experiences, so the world could know about the true suffering of people with this condition. She does this through a diary called “Bug” and records her hospital days through a voice recognition Dictaphone. However, the real twist in this story is, I am Jessica, and this is my story.
Who am I?
My name is Jessica Taylor-Bearman and I have been seriously unwell for the past eleven years, suffering from the disease M.E. I’ve always loved writing and have always wanted to be a published author. However, this disease is unpredictable and I never got the chance to follow my dream; until now.
This is where the digital Dictaphone called Bug came into it. Each day, I would think about the sentence I wanted to say and used it to painstakingly make notes, so when I was able to communicate effectively it would one day become a book.
What is M.E?
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is a systemic neuroimmune condition characterised by post-exertional malaise (a severe worsening of symptoms after even minimal exertion). It causes dysregulation of both the immune system and the nervous system. The effects of ME are devastating enough to leave 25% of patients housebound or bedbound. For moderate to severe patients, living with ME is like living with late-stage cancer, advanced stage AIDS, or congestive heart failure for decades. In many parts of the world, it is commonly called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
I have been working on A Girl Behind Dark Glasses for quite a few years but kept stopping because of a deterioration in my health. Despite still being severely unwell, I’ve managed to finish it and believe it will really stand as a voice for those who are otherwise voiceless with ill health. Using a traditional publishing route can take a very long time. I wanted to make the book more accessible by making an audiobook, as well as other formats, and this I've done through the self-publishing route.
If we surpass our funding target, I would love to start looking into the possibilities of translating A Girl Behind Dark Glasses into other languages because this is a worldwide condition affecting millions, (exciting, I know!!)
Collecting funds will help me:
- Create a high-quality audio book that will be available in English
- Publish copies of A Girl Behind Dark Glasses to create longevity beyond the crowdfunding campaign
- To enable the book to be shipped worldwide
- Finish the final edit to make sure it is of the highest quality
- Create an eBook to make this story available as universally as possible
- To be able to get the self-publishing rights, including the ISBN registration and a barcode so it can be available in bookstores and libraries.
Risks and challenges
The book is complete, it just needs to be fully edited, as it was written through computer aided materials. I want it to be of the highest quality - this could take additional time but will be totally worth it.
I hope that people will understand that this is my first time self publishing and crowdfunding so people's patience with me would be amazing. My health is constantly up and down so this will create challenges that I need to overcome. I will make sure that everyone is kept up to date with any progress to stop this being an issue.
I have chosen a reasonable approximate delivery date. Anyone living outside the UK, will have to be aware that it might take a little bit longer to be delivered due to the postal system. There will also be a small charge for the p&p throughout the UK and the rest of the world.
Please help spread the word of this project as far and wide as possible, to ensure as many people see it. This book has many twists and turns and is a story that needs to be heard for the M.E community. YOU are the only way this can happen.
