DARIN M. WHITE: OVERFLOW - A DEBUT NEW YORK SOLO EXHIBITION
As an artist and arts advocate my wife and I help produce and curate art exhibitions, provide opportunities an encourage artists through b.a.l.m. | beauty, art and life movement. I was offered a personal DEBUT SOLO ART SHOW at an alternative gallery space in Brooklyn, NY from April 13-26, 2012. The space is all that is provided, and the artist acts as the janitor, gallerist, host and receptionist. To be able to produce the large conceptual based installation and object artwork that I make, as well as be in New York for 2-3 weeks during the exhibition, I am raising funds to help make this project a reality. Please HELP ME GET THE WORD OUT about this project and start with as little as a dollar of support below! There are a lot of amazing rewards, so please take a little time and check out what your support will do to help this project succeed. You can donate ANY AMOUNT, the reward is just a starting point. See the REWARDS descriptions, images and details down below or to go direct to make a pledge click on the Reward to the right. And thank you! (If you are not aware, A KICKSTARTER PROJECT has to be FULLY FUNDED or it IS NOT FUNDED!)
I have a dollar, you have a dollar and together our dollars add up to produce amazing results and change the world. Well, this exhibition might not change the world (it may) but for sure it will challenge people to dig a little deeper, feel an excitement and passion and hopefully think a little more. This is the power of art! It is the permission to speak into those things deep inside of us, that may not be comprehensible. If you like this project please PLEDGE at least $1. By donating ANY AMOUNT over $1 I will keep you updated on the project and connected! If you really like (LOVE?) this project and can help with more funds, please do. I AM RELIANT ON YOU TO MAKE THIS PROJECT HAPPEN! To say thank you, THERE ARE SOME GREAT REWARDS...SEE a little further BELOW!
PLEASE READ ON There's a TON of information here. I have added bold text so if you just need the highlights these are there for you. If you have questions, see the FAQs section at the bottom of the page or please let me know if your question is not answered by sending me a message above.
I will fly to New York, find discarded pallets or purchase them for as little as possible. I will disassemble the pallets, and re-purpose the wood to build the barn shaped structure for "Overflow"one of the main artworks in the exhibition. More details further below. I will empty around 3,000 lbs. of whole corn seeds inside the "barn" until it overflows out on both sides. The taxidermy bear will be delivered to the gallery in Brooklyn for "Bear Heart", the other main large artwork in the exhibition. I will hang the work and arrange the space, order and install the signage and sponsor names for the window. I will contact the press (again) to remind them that the exhibition is opening. April 13th (or TBD) there will be an opening reception, and hopefully a closing reception when the show is finished on April 26th. During the time the exhibition is ongoing I will have set gallery hours and will be in the space during this time interacting with the viewers. When viewers are not in the space, I will be working on the rewards for supporters and be keeping the website updated with inside information and the progression. I will be photographing the work, or will have a professional photographer come in to photograph the exhibition for the Exhibition Catalog that is part of the rewards. I am hopeful that we raise enough funds so my wife Shannon will be able to visit and have a meal with supporters and see the exhibition. If you want to see WHY THIS PROJECT WILL WORK, see the FAQ section near the bottom of this page.
REWARDS! - HERE THEY ARE!
There are some great rewards here! I hope you agree. See below for details, check out what's offered and then make your pledge in the right hand column. If you don't see exactly what you want, please add additional rewards to combine them together. YOU CAN PLEDGE ANY AMOUNT YOU PREFER and choose any reward below this that totals up to the pledge amount, or choose to not receive a reward. If that doesn't work for you, let me know and I will see what we can do. I want you to be happy with supporting this project and with your reward for doing so!
Here are some
As part of the site specific installation, "Overflow", there will be corn seeds (whole corn) pouring out the sides of the work. If you were to visit the exhibition in Brooklyn, you would have an opportunity to take a Seed Packet and fill it with some corn seeds from the installation. Since most of you won't have the opportunity to visit the exhibition, I wanted to offer the ability to feel like you were there, or perhaps later, claim you were! Here is a conceptual rendering of what the Seed Packet may look like.

I have been waiting a while to print an Exhibition Catalog! Yea!
The Exhibition Catalog will be beautiful and well crafted paper back. It won't be huge, but then you aren't looking for a JCPenny's catalog are you? It will have professional image of the renderings of the work as well as the actual images of the show. The catalog will include background information on my process, and the madness that it requires to be an artist. To pledge see Rewards on the right column for $35.

There are various prints, sizes and number limitations available as rewards on the prints below. Exhibition prints are available in two sizes, 8.5" x 11" or 12" x 18" or 20" x 24".
OVERFLOW - Digital conceptual rendering of site specific installation and namesake of exhibition.
Overflow conjures thoughts of farmland, barns and brimming silos. Seeds are important and are traded as a commodity. Cycles of life happen whether we understand the process or choose to bury our head. Our land, resources and life are laid out in front of us, one moment at a time. What will we do with what we are given?
BEAR HEART - A naturally peaceful bear protrudes from the wall with arms extended in a kind gesture, paws touching. The negative shape of the arms creates a simple but powerful message, and encourages the viewer to wrestle with larger issues of life.

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE: BURLAP AND EARTH
A men’s suit made from the same material to hold potatoes or coffee is buried to its knees in soil. Out of the earth emerges a single seedling. Appropriate Attire: Burlap and Earth wrestles with issues of power and humility, struggle, toil, life cycle, memento mori, forward movement and growth.

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE: ASHES AND BURLAP
A burlap sack becomes a women’s dress that either is rising out of or sinking into ashes which create the outline. From the ashes, new growth begins to form. In nature when fire burns the forest decimating it, eventually out of this process emerges life and the chance to begin again.

SURPRISE QUICK SKETCH
For you gamblers and lovers of the thrill! A
drawing that I make up on the spot. It will probably be related to the
show, as I will be drawing in the gallery space in NY. Or, I may just pull out a work from my flat files!
Below is an example idea.
Quick sketch shown on journal. Image sketch will be on drawing paper.
CONVERSATION WITH THE ARTIST
This is a little scary, but I will do this for the sake of art! I will give you a call and we will talk about art and life for a brief, but not boring time. Feel free to ask me questions about my work, background, life, and get the skinny on what is going on or just shoot the breeze. If you make it to Lawrence (or when I am in NY), lets make this a coffee chat.

SPALTED MAPLE WEARABLE SCULPTURE
If you are unsure what spalted maple is, I am very glad to introduce you to a beautiful find. Spalting is basically where the wood begins to rot. However, in this natural process of rotting, some amazing things happen. I take this already beautiful wood and carve it into simplified but elegant shapes. Then the wood is clear coat protected to show off that beautiful characteristics and added to a silver chain or a leather necklace adding the "wearable" part to "sculpture". See example image below see the sidebar to the right to pledge your support. Size, shape and color will vary between each piece as these are natural wood. You can specify, small, medium or large per your preference.

LIMITED COPPER TRANSFER PRINTS
I love to produce these copper transfer prints. Get one while you can, there are ONLY 1 OF EACH!
These two prints shown below are particularly thick copper and were custom framed by the artist in solid maple with clear coat. Both of these works shown below were just on exhibit as a "curators note" in the exhibition Earth: Language and Symbols January, 20-March 10th, 2012 at Cara and Cabezas Contemporary in the Crossroads District of Kansas City, Missouri.

SPALTED MAPLE SCULPTURE
I described spalted maple previously under Wearable Sculpture's. I take this already beautiful wood and carve in into simplified but elegant shapes. I will sculpt a good sized chunk of this spalted maple into a minimalistic form to show off the wood and will include an exotic wood base with a steel support. The sculpture will be able to be removed from the base mount and handled and admired. Each is unique, a one-of-a-kind! Size, shape and color will vary between each piece as these are natural wood.

WHY THIS PROJECT WILL WORK?
See FAQ at the bottom of this page... it is a really good answer!
WHAT WILL YOU USE THE MONEY FOR?
Travel, production, shipping costs, awards and printing costs. (Details in FAQ at the bottom of the page)
THE TOTAL REQUESTED FOR THIS KICKSTARTER PROJECT DOESN'T ADD UP TO COVER THE COSTS OF THE PROJECT! The Kickstarter goal is the minimum to help this project happen. The actual goal is higher, and I am hopeful with your help we can get there!
AS YOU MAY KNOW, KICKSTARTER PROVIDES ALL OR NOTHING FUNDING! I am being careful to make sure that this project gets funded and happens by keeping the funding goal low. I have already and will continue to fund this project out of my pocket if I have to. As I mentioned previously, I am committed. I still need your help and support to make this project happen in the best way it possibly can (and to not go into further debt!) Thank you in advance for helping us raise more than the goal!
See FAQ for more details below... It is worth the trip!
WEBSITE AND EXHIBITION CATALOG
The project be documented online at http://darinwhite.wordpress.com on the Updates Tab on this Kickstarter page and in an Exhibition Catalog. The website will have updates as the project progresses. Don't forget to pledge at least a dollar for insider updates an info. The Exhibition Catalog is available for a pledge of $35 or more. See the awards highlights above or pledge on the right side of this page.
Past projects that I have produced/curated or exhibited in have been covered in a variety of ways including various news papers and alternative papers, National Public Radio, local radio, in art and regional magazines, and TV. I'm looking for organizations to partner with that appreciate the issues that I am raising about food source, life in general and the cycles of life. If you are press or media, and would like to help spread the word, please contact me at 785.842.2216 or through the contact button at the top of the page. If you are an individual or business organization that would like to sponsor, please look to the pledge opportunities for sponsoring at right or contact me to discuss a specific idea you have.
Thank you for your support. Please add enough for International shipping from the US and this will vary depending on what you choose! Remember, this is to raise support for an artist producing a creative exhibition so please make sure to cover the shipping and paperwork costs. If you need to know an estimate for what you want to pledge, let me know. Thank you!
TELL YOUR FRIENDS!
One way you can help is to tell your friends about this project and encourage them to support it too! Please pass this on. There are links above to tweet this project and embed the video on your site.
PLEASE DON'T WAIT!
Pledge now! I personally have missed out on at least two Kickstarter projects because I waited to do so and forgot or missed the deadline. Please don't make the same mistake I did! There is a deadline and I am reliant on your support to make this happen! Any amount is great! If you can come back later and give more fabulous, but at least even with a dollar you will get the updates and know the inside track of what is going on.
