WHO I AM & WHO WE ARE
Hello there lovely people :) My name is Nadira, I founded and lead a jazz ensemble called Nadira and Friends. We showcase quirky, cheeky, modern take on all-time favourites jazz standards and show tunes...as well as, cracking a joke or two and bantering amongst ourselves and with our beautiful audience in between songs.
I am currently living mostly in Hobart, Tasmania, however, we've been busy gigging mostly in Melbourne and Victoria, of course in Hobart and other parts of beautiful Tasmania and other parts of Australia. I am extremely grateful that shortly after I started Nadira and Friends, I get to play with various jazz brothers and sisters, ridiculously amazing musicians such as Konrad Park, Ben Brinkhoff, Zarven Kara, Mina Yu, Ben Charnley, Hiroki Hoshino, Michael Panton and heaps more. I've also had the privilege to perform with my most fave Australian jazz musicians, I consider them my teachers, mentors and friends namely Bob Sedergreen, Sharny Russell, Nick Haywood and James Sherlock. Check out a couple of short clips below, my first gig with Bob Sedergreen and Sharny Russell at Paris Cat Jazz Club in Melbourne.
I'm also deeply thankful for the love and support shown by my dear friends and dedicated followers, both in Australia and abroad. Check out so many lovely posts from our dear friends and followers on our Facebook page , our YouTube channels 1 and 2 , our website and Instagram.
Some festival/event organisers and venue owners started nick-naming me "fiery pocket rocket", which I am more than proud to adopt. It succinctly represents what I'm about, someone who's always shamelessly dreaming big and going real hard to actualise those big dreams despite numerous rejections and hurdles!
WHAT'S DARE TO DREAM ABOUT?
Paying homage to the iconic jazz album of Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley's, DARE TO DREAM is a culmination of DREAMING BIG and reaching it!
You gotta have a dream...if you don't have a dream...how're you gonna have a dream come true? (Happy Talk).......right????
Let's go back to end of 2016...imagine, little Nadira saw/heard James Sherlock, an Australian jazz guitarist whizz for the first time. I was definitely a total rookie in the jazz biz, but I knew what I had heard was pure gold! I clearly remember how I thought to myself then "I'm gonna play with that guy one day!" Fast forward November 2018, bumped into James at a jazz club in Melbourne. In a true Nadira's style I told him about my story from back in 2016 and closed the chat with "Well...here I am asking you to play with me!"...and the rest is history.
Soon after, we locked in a time and concept for our recording...I've always wanted to do a tribute to an iconic jazz album, and I've been obsessed with Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley for a while, so that choice was easy to make and James was happy to do the arrangement for all the songs. Another easy process was booking Nick Haywood to be in charge of the double bass and Niko Schauble to be the sound engineer. These two dudes are legendary in their chosen fields of jazz biz...not only that, they're some of the nicest humans I've ever met. A full-day recoding/tracking was completed at Pughouse Studios on 22 January 2019.
I was deadset on covering the fees and costs from my own pocket because I'm a strong independent woman and stuff. However, this process was definitely challenging. I was slogging away working extra shifts on my day/night job as a nurse in the emergency department, whilst doing general daily stuff, studying, gigging and rehearsing, promoting gigs, managing Nadira and Friends...and maintaining my mental and physical well-being. Luckily, I managed to pay for both musicians, arrangement and sound engineer fees, and a full day recording/tracking cost and 50% deposit for a venue hire in Hobart for album launch show, all up was approx. AUD$1900.
WHAT'S NEXT? THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN (PLEASE AND THANK YOU)
Before we are able to share the magic of our music with you, we still need to cover the mandatory expenses:
- Mixing and mastering $770
- Photographer and graphic designer $730
- 300 x CDs replication $880
- Song licences $500
A total of $2880.
There's also still other expenses for another 50% of venue hire for Hobart launch show $100, video and initial promo $200 and online distribution $300 = $600, which I aim to cover myself...as I don't want to set the target too high.
Should we manage to raise over the target of $2880, I would allocate this to cover the following:
- other expenses
- to cover travel and accommodation costs for us (James, Nick and I) to do album launch shows in more parts of Australia, not just in Melbourne and Hobart
- Produce more CDs if there's demand for it
This is the part where I am welcoming you lovely people to be a part of DARE TO DREAM journey. Please get amongst it by choosing your rewards and backing this project, as well as sharing this campaign far and wide. Let's show it to the world that it is OK to DREAM big and DREAMS can come true...with your backing of course ;)
Staying fully optimistic and forever hopeful...with your backing...TOGETHER we can DARE TO DREAM <3
Risks and challenges
Should we do not manage to reach our target by 20 March 2019...well...it'd be sucky as we wouldn't get anything at all...like $0! But hey, life goes on...and I'd have to work extra extra hard by picking up more shifts to cover both mandatory and other expenses to get DARE TO DREAM production completed, ready for the album launch shows on the 20th (Melbourne) and 27th (Hobart) April...but I hope this isn't gonna be the case :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
