Dare2Draw Mentoring Anthology, Featuring Nexus Continues...
Here's the plan! We're moving the Mentoring Anthology project to the Dare2Draw Home website. For more information, please join us there.
We would like to thank you all for supporting this Dare2Draw Kickstarter campaign and this great, unique concept in mentoring the next generation of sequential artists.
Thank you for helping us bring the campaign to this point—you helped us beta test the mechanism required to be able to create such a groundbreaking mentoring series. This is just the beginning of the journey towards publishing the 1st volume.
1) We now have a structure in place to work with mentoring professionals, art schools, students and up-and-coming artists, as well as the process of getting the word out, with the help of press.
2) We’re currently in talks with publishers to print Volume 1 of the Mentoring Anthology Series: Nexus—and starting to work on Volume #2: Will Eisner's The Spirit.
It was heartwarming and wonderful to see the amount of attention to detail and professionalism that all the artists and mentors contributed, creating and collaborating on the material for this 80-page color celebration of Nexus.
Thank you to The Kubert School and all the wonderful staff and students.

Dare2Draw: What is it?
Dare2Draw is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit, educational and cultural organization dedicated to creating and supporting mentoring and networking opportunities for cartoonists of all levels; Cultivating the awareness of and appreciation for the study of sequential art; and the furtherance and preservation of the comic book medium's contributions to literacy, art, and culture, through outreach programs, events, and projects.
Dare2Draw's Founder, Charles D. Chenet, and Dare2Draw's Resident Mentoring Artist, Simon Fraser, have joined forces with Brendan Wright, Editor Extraordinaire, to bring to you our first Dare2Draw Mentoring Anthology, Featuring Nexus.
We’re preparing to expand our Dare2Draw mentoring program into print by producing our first Mentoring Anthology, in association with the Joe Kubert School. Each annual anthology will feature well-known, creator-owned characters, and for our debut volume Steve Rude and Mike Baron are supporting us by lending their signature character—Nexus!

Dare2Draw Mentors' Original Art Rewards!
Original Color Guides by Tom Ziuko, Dare2Draw Mentoring Artist
Color guides are hand-painted original artwork of the Marvel and DC Comics colorists. Since comic books are no longer colored by hand (they're colored by computers now), these ONE-OF-A-KIND, hand-colored, color guide pages have become very sought after, collectible. Over the decades, most color original guide art pages were lost, damaged or destroyed.
Now, Dare2Draw and the Kubert School are teaming up to help their students make the jump to a professional career in comics by putting what they've learned into practical application with the Dare2Draw program’s Mentoring Anthology.
Some of the top talent in the comic book field and past Dare2Draw Mentors are supporting this project by contributing their skills to this outstanding new batch of comic book artists. Participating in this first-of-its-kind printed mentorship project are comic book professionals Adam Kubert, Andy Kubert, Mike Chen, Steve Rude, Mike Baron, Simon Fraser, and Brendan Wright; professional writers Amy Chu, Ron Marz, Corinna Bechko, Eric M. Esquivel, Alex de Campi, Teel James Glenn, and Jason Sterr; professional colorists Tom Zuiko and Paul Mounts; professional designer and letterer Dezi Sienty; and up-and-coming artists: 3rd-year Joe Kubert School students Cecilia Liang, Idan Knafo, Erik Klaus, and Yosam Cardenas; Dare2Draw artists: Rory Smith, Earl Womack, Lynne Yoshii, Yifeng Jiang, Elisa Feliz, Kenly Dillard, Elliot Fernandez, Jaime Botero, and Han Yu; and comics veteran Mike Harris.
New talent in the comics business is often treated in a predatory manner, by an industry that can be exploitative of aspiring new creatives.
The Dare2Draw Nexus Anthology is all about giving new artists the best platform to show off their skills, while being paid a fair wage. That doesn't seem like it's an extraordinary thing to be able to do, but it really is.
We need your help to give these extraordinary young talents a great start.

For Artists, by Artists...A classic bonus model will be in full effect with Dare2Draw's Anthology series!
This pre-order Kickstarter campaign will determine the bonus pay of Dare2Draw creators. They've already earned a page rate for their contributions, but the more money this Kickstarter makes, the more money they'll receive!
After we reach our 2nd stretch goal, Dare2Draw will establish a $500 GRANT for one EXCEPTIONAL Joe Kubert School first year student in 2017.
- If the Kickstarter reaches $22,000, each contributor/team will collect an extra $30.00.
- All the following stretch goals will go towards artist bonuses!
Why is postage separate and not included in the reward? Due to all the moving parts and the complexity of running such a campaign, and all the expenses of printing and delivering on all the campaign rewards, it's a big help when the postage is calculated separately.
Keeping things separate makes it easier for us to ensure that everyone receives the reward they pledged for! This project is designed to benefit all the participating artists and that your pledges are used most effectively to support the artists.
We hope you'll consider backing the anthology and help us help artists transition to the professional level.
We need everyone's help to make this book a reality! Thanks again for taking the time to read this. We hope you'll consider making a pledge to support this project!
Please share this campaign, anywhere and everywhere, with all your friends. And if you're an exceptional artist, please reach out and contact us, to be part of our next anthology, featuring Will Eisner's "The Spirit"!
Dare2Draw - Event History: The organization first began doing events under the name Big City Drink and Draw, in bars and restaurants across New York City, later calling itself the Big City Dare2Draw and finally shortening the name to the Dare2Draw.
Events have been done at venues including, most recently, the Google YouTube Space NY, MNN Studios, MOCCA, Wizard World, New York Comic Con, The Art Students League of NY, The Brooklyn Brewery, The Art Directors Club, The Society of Illustrators and CFAN.
An amazing array of top professionals in the field of illustration and comic book art have supported the programs with their presence and mentoring, including: Arthur Suydam, Steve Rude, Walt Simonson, Phil Sienkiewicz, Annie Nocenti, Alex Maleev, Mary Wilshire, Simon Fraser, Jason Little, Phil Jimenez, Nathan Fox, Amy Reeder, Rebekah Isaacs, Carl Potts, Chip Kidd, Bill Plympton, Russ Braun, Adam Kubert, Neal Adams, Amy Reeder, Shane Davis, Klaus Janson, Cliff Chiang, Reilly Brown, Carl Potts, Sean Murphy, Gary Erskine, Costa Vavagiakis, Jamal Igle, and many others.
Risks and challenges
The Dare2Draw team has been producing a variety of community outreach events for the past six years to help develop its programs, including launching, running, and fulfilling our first Kickstarter, for "Dare2Draw: The Series."
For this Kickstarter, we’re working with many of the same wonderful people that have been supporting our mission and that want to see this project realized.
All of the stories have been written and most are completely drawn. Some are already colored and lettered, and the final stories are on track to finish around the date that this campaign ends. Design work has also begun, so the book is in excellent shape and the risk of our team not being able to complete it is very small.
Together, with the support of professionals in the field, the Kubert School, Dark Horse Comics, art schools, and art organizations, we hope to take this step forward to help cartoonists.
