Follow in the footsteps of men like Henry Ford and Cornelius Vanderbilt to bring the light of progress to the masses. Provide the people with jobs and a sense of purpose, in turn, they will help you build a financial empire that will go down in history.
Exploit resources, build factories, and develop infrastructure to transform sleepy little towns into gleaming pillars of industry.
Designed with an eye towards both accessibility and depth, Project Automata takes inspiration from classic games like Industry Giant, Transport Tycoon, Anno, and Factorio. There’s enough strategic complexity and replayability to satisfy the most experienced lovers of the genre, while its user friendly mechanics ensure that new players will love it as well.
Project Automata is a game that is crammed with great ideas, features, designs, and more. Below you’ll find just a handful of the features that are currently in our Alpha Demo, as well as some more that are on their way. This is by no means a comprehensive list, just a snippet of what is to come!
What's that? You say trust is earned and the proof is in the pudding? Well that's okay because we love pudding! We also love the game we have created and we know you will too. In fact, we are so confident that you will love it, we created an Alpha Demo to show you how far we’ve come already. We even included Mac and Linux versions! Click the image to access the demo! Please note that some users reported that a SmartScreen alert appears stating that the game isn't certified. Simply dismiss it, it's just Microsoft being over-protective. We promise it's virus-free!
Please bear in mind this is an Alpha Demo, so not all of the features we mentioned above have been implemented. That’s why we need your help. With your generous support, we know we can finish the game, polish the rough edges, and make this one of the best games ever. We release regular updates about the game’s progress in our “Unearthed” blog series and maintain contact with the community via our forums and social media. We have continually updated our Alpha Demo with patches and feature updates. We will do the same for the full version of the game.

Our goal with Kickstarter is to take our game a new level. We understand that we are asking for what seems like a great deal of money, but that’s because not only we are very ambitious. To achieve this goal, Dapper Penguin Studio has drawn on a wide range of experience from an excellent team of a dozen people, and each and every member brings their own strong, unique, and comprehensive set of skills to Project Automata.
Not only are we building an amazing game, with the love and care it needs, but we are also developing an advanced A.I. that will change the gaming industry forever. Your support will help us do that and so much more.
We started our Steam Greenlight campaign on September 26th and rocketed into the top 100 Greenlight games by the end of the first day. Check out our Steam Greenlight page:
Having spent the last year operating on personal budgets, bank loans and support from family and friends, we have now entered a critical stage of development, and the opportunity for us to work full time. To complete Project Automata, and to build a strong and well known Game Development Studio is now restricted by a critical factor: Time. Without the ability for us to hire our team on a Full Time basis we’re going to immediately place Project Automata at a disadvantage, something that both the project, and you, our community doesn’t deserve.
Thank you all for your time, trust, and support. We hope you will join us on our journey to complete this amazing game.
Project Automata is a masterful blending of the tycoon and industrial simulation genres. You begin the game with limited resources and a small, rented shop. To grow your empire you will need to build farms, mines, and other gatherers to exploit the resources around you. Sell those resources to nearby towns and cities for a quick profit or build factories to transform those resources into more lucrative goods.
In its current, early alpha state, Project Automata is already on par with many existing games in the genre. Players can build supply chains to gather and develop resources, they can sell those resources to towns, or trade them between towns. A tutorial and basic model of the financial simulation is also in place making the game quite playable and enjoyable. However, we are far from satisfied with the current version of the game. It can be so much more, and with your help it will be.
Developing a game is tough. It takes hundreds of thousands of hours of hard work and dedication to bring a great game into existence. There is no guarantee that all those efforts will be rewarded, so why do it? In a word - passion. We build games because we love them and because we love all of you - our amazing fans. We are fortunate to have independence from corporate think-tanks and red tape. We can provide you with a quality game because we don’t have to build games strictly based on profit margins and market strategies; that suits us just fine.
We’re making Project Automata for fans of the industrial simulation genre, but also to introduce these wonderful games to a whole new generation of gamers. Games like Transport Tycoon, Industry Giant, Tropico, and the Anno series are fading away and newer entries like Factorio and Parkitect tend to be overshadowed by the waves of First Person Shooters and freemium MMOs that seem to come out on a daily basis.
We want to continue the growth of this wonderful genre by providing another game that, in time, will become a classic, just like those Tycoon games of old. With a proven track record working for companies like Pyros and Blizzard Entertainment our fearless leader, Alessandro Mochi, is just the man to lead our talented and dedicated team of industry professionals.
A great game not only entertains the player, it also creates an unforgettable atmosphere. Project Automata is set during the golden age of industrial expansion. We want the feeling of that time period to be represented throughout the game. Our amazing artists, have created a distinctive art style for Project Automata that brings the game to life and gives it a nostalgic atmosphere that players will love.
Under the hood, Project Automata will break new ground in advanced industrial simulation. Unlike other games in the genre, the towns and environment in Project Automata will be living, breathing, organisms. They will interact with the player, with other towns, and with competing companies. To succeed, players will need to constantly evaluate their strategies and decisions. The A.I. will be so good even we, as developers, won't know what it will do from one game to the next.
As you build, so will the world around you. Towns will grow into cities, and cities into metropolises. Every town will have Mayors and Councils that make decisions throughout the game based on their own personalities and agendas. They will enact bills that change the economy in different ways and, if the player is in good standing, they will provide rewards that boost the player’s business.
Technology will play a big role in the growth of your empire. You begin the game with the most basic technology. Simple trucks will transport your goods to and from your hubs and town trade centers. As you progress through the game, new technologies will become available. Eventually your factories will grow into huge industrial parks that pump out tons of products every day.
Of course all of this production is bound to have some impact on the environment. Waste and pollution will be a factor. Some towns will be more ‘green’ than others and they won’t appreciate the beauty of those big factory smokestacks as much as you.
Not only will you have to worry about air and noise pollution, but also ground pollution and how it affects nearby farms and factories. No one wants to drink orange juice made from polluted oranges. Yuck! To keep everyone happy you will have to keep that waste under control or find a magician to make it all disappear.
Project Automata will be a very complex and engaging simulation, but it will also be tons of fun. From the nostalgic art style to the humorous dialog present throughout the game, Project Automata is designed to be a wonderful, tongue-in-cheek look at early industrialism. Your guide will be your company secretary, Miss Doreen Watts. Her witty, and sometimes laugh-out-loud, dialog will keep you engaged and on task.
There will be a rich, story-driven campaign included in the final version, that will welcome new and experienced players alike into the world of industrial capitalism. There will also be unique scenarios to play in the game, challenging you to overcome obstacles and get your empire back on track.
Project Automata will be fun, engaging, and endlessly replayable. Some games we play and forget, but others earn that coveted permanent spot on our hard drives. We are confident that Project Automata will earn that spot and be the go-to game for fans for years to come.
Being 100% funded is a great start for the game, but we would really love to take the development way beyond the basics. You can help us hit our stretch goals by filling out the achievements table below.
Each spot on the grid represents one achievement. As we unlock them they will change from grey to full technicolor. The more achievements we fill in, the closer we get to our next stretch goal. While most of these are self-explanatory, the last two might need a little clarification.
We want everyone to take screenshots of their best factory layouts and post them to social media using #projectautomata. We want to see your wackiest, funniest, most geometrically perfect, or just plain weird layouts here folks. Make them good because only one image per person will count toward the achievements. Some of the very best might even be featured on our webpage, so get creative!
The last achievement is all about you, in particular, selfies of yourself in front of real life factories. Post them to social media using #projectautomata We want to see your happy faces in front of factories all over the world, the crazier and funnier the better. The very best might even be featured on our webpage!
Follow us on social media and come join the conversation on our forums!
Every cent of the money we receive from this campaign will go directly to the production of the game and salaries for our team, so we can eat, pay the rent, and keep pushing forward. None of this money will be taken as profit. Our company business model means all money raised will be exclusively used to further Project Automata.
Over a third of what we make will go to taxes and fees. The remaining amount will be allocated to various departments as defined below. These percentages include salaries for our team as well as assets necessary for the completion of each piece of the pie.
- Programming includes all of the coding for the game including the A.I.
- Design includes the development of the game's existing features as well as the design and implementation of new features.
- Audio/Visual includes all of the 2D and 3D art design, music, sound, and the user interface.
- Marketing includes advertising, social media, website design and maintenance, and public relations.
- Production includes all of the other details like legal fees, paperwork, outsourcing, and a million other little odds and ends that invariably pop up.
Dapper Penguin Studios is an indie developer. We have a small team that has been working on this game for over a year on their own time and with their own money. It has been, and continues to be, a labor of love. We would love to complete it and share it with all of you and with a little help, we know we can do just that.
Kickstarter gives us all an opportunity to have the games we want, so we hope you will join us on the journey. In turn we promise to stay small, independent, and to do our best to bring you the most awesome game ever.
The full alpha version of the game will be available shortly after the Kickstarter campaign ends. We expect the beta to be ready by the third quarter of 2017 and the full release in the first quarter of 2018. The Alpha and Beta versions will also include Steam Early Access once that becomes available. Of course these dates are tentative and depend largely on the success of our Kickstarter campaign.
To all of our fans and to all of our backers, thank you for your support, for your love, and for being just plain awesome!
Risks and challenges
Building a game has inherent challenges. Programming the A.I., creating the 2D/3D art assets, and creating an emotion evoking soundtrack are just a few of the many elements that have to come together to make a great game.
Project Automata has an advantage over other games because we have the bones of the game already designed and built. We have already developed a lot of the game’s structure. We just need some help getting the rest of the way to a complete game.
We know we will hit bumps along the way, but we have an amazing team of industry veterans that can work through them and keep the development on track. We have a pool of enormous talent to draw from. They have dedicated their time and efforts to this game because it is their passion. Many sacrifices have been made, from pitching in their own money, to leaving jobs, and even downgrading living situations just to make this game a reality. We are confident that we can overcome any obstacles that may pop up along the way.
We have the talent, integrity, and drive, but most importantly we have the love and passion to make sure this game is everything we, our backers, and our fans want it to be.
**Please note that the flavor text in our rewards is just for fun. Only the actual listed rewards will be provided for backers. The delivery dates are for the rewards and don't reflect the release date of any version of the game which is still TBD. No small planets, airships, cheese, or puppies were harmed in the making of this Kickstarter campaign. Thank you - Mgmt.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
