About this project

We are Danyel Smith and Elliott Wilson. We're married.

Elliott is a host and a television producer and he runs a popular and influential website called Rap Radar. Danyel is at Stanford finishing up a John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship. For lots more about us, you can click here, and here, and here.

We have been journalists for years. We’ve both been editors-in-chief. We've done this at Vibe, and XXL and Billboard. We’ve both been music editors. We've done this at SF Weekly and Vibe and The Source. We are both authors of fiction and nonfiction books.

Somehow though we’ve never worked together, on the same project. Until now.

This is HRDCVR. And we want you to be a part of it.

We are creating HRDCVR because we believe that the true mainstream — the multi-culture — is not being served. We want to take everything we’ve learned from decades in publishing and make something  brilliant and inspirational.

HRDCVR is about sixth men. Kamala Khan. Cricket in the US. YG. Doc Rivers. Boyle Heights punk. David Lee. Dom Kennedy. Hieu Minh Nguyen. Sodium Thiopental. Nene Leakes. Macklemore. Cornrow bike helmets. Pine Ridge. Jumeirah Beach. The tiny house movement. Jenny Liou. Wendy Davis. Fan Bingbing. Sasha and Malia. J.R. Selski. NBA Latin Night. Nery Gabriel Lemus. Chee-hoo! Visitation rooms in prisons. Girls on scooters in Marrakech.

We believe one can adore DJ Snake and Cloud Nothings and Gerardo Ortiz and NIcki Minaj and still want to get deep into how things are moving at the protests in Venezuela, want to know who the humans are behind the net neutrality battles, want to prep for the 2016 elections.

We believe, as we always have, that the only way to cover the New Everyone is with teams that reflect it.

HRDCVR is a print publication because we believe print is still a powerful medium, and still hasn’t been pushed to its extreme. Part of this project is about developing a new aesthetic for print. A new vocabulary. We’re thinking about dry-transfer and dye-transfer. Emblems. Text as image. Sticker paper. Monumentality. Entire stories built in pull-quote. Wide-width satin ribbon bookmarks. Matte paper and glossy paper at the same damn time.

Our vision is ambitious. But we want this to be beautiful. It's our desire to pay people for their writing and reporting and photography and design work (we want to, and will have to raise more than our goal to do so!). We want to lay a solid foundation so HRDCVR can grow and sustain itself. We want to have the first HRDCVR issue — Issue 1nce — out by November 28, which means we also need to have more creatives.

Here are some of the people we’ve assembled to help us make this happen.

Benjamin Meadows-Ingram: Director of Content at MySpace, founder of Brooklyn Bound

Alexa Schirtzinger, 2013-14 John S. Knight Journalism Fellow, former editor-in-chief of the Santa Fe Reporter

Andrew Losowsky, editor, curator, writer, John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University

Andre Blair

Ella Camellia, filmmaker

Diwang Valdez of Motion Family, photographer, designer, founder of Cashew Co.

Katie Patterson of L O L A Creative

Mahdis Keshavarz, principal,The Make Agency

Tran Ha, John S. Knight Journalism Fellow, Stanford University

Diamonde Williamson

Umbreen Bhatti, Briefly, John S. Knight Journalism Fellow, Stanford University

Thank you so much for your support and interest. We want to change the soul of journalism. We hope you’ll join us.

Risks and challenges

The challenges we anticipate include collaboration practices (as we are all over the U.S.), working a printer we love and adore (ha!), figuring out whether we're going to accept advertising support, and if so, how that would look. The fun challenge will be working in a finite medium, and so having to choose, to make what are rapidly becoming old-fashioned decisions—in a modern way. We just want this thing to exist brilliantly.

We'll be looking for advice and inspiration from the HRDCVR community every step of the way—so please, speak up! And be assured that whatever comes our way, we will prevail, there will be an actual HRDCVR—and it will be amazing.
