About

In an ancient and astonishingly gorgeous land, a young farmer named Aldrick teams up with three bodyguards, a reclusive wizard, and his elder brother to defeat a villain who strives to attain ultimate power and bring about the destruction of humanity.

Halfstone: A Tale of the Narathlands was once just a fond adventure in an isolated child’s daydreams, until it was melded into a humble self-published novel.

Always, Halfstone was envisioned as a feature film and now, setting eyes on that goal, I realise I’m following a dream that doesn't belong to me alone. After convening with friends and family, exploring articles and forums online, and frowning while tallying up the number of modern films of the exact genre as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, it can be confirmed that THE WORLD YEARNS FOR A NEW, PURE SWORDS, CLOAKS, MAGIC AND DRAGONS HIGH FANTASY FEATURE FILM TO RELEASE IN CINEMAS.

Because: what if this path is the only way to have more films like this made.

Picture this:

Bonus inclusion:  A fantasy film needs an epic soundtrack, but we also reckon unexpected and staggeringly beautiful music in the midst of an action-heavy sequence is pretty high up there on the ‘must have’ list.

YOUR PARTICIPATION IS VITAL.

CROWD: Such a massive project will require financing from a film studio at a later stage. As a Kickstarter project backer you’re not only pledging financial support to the project but you’re demonstrating a demand for it – confirming its commercial viability. A genuine public demand will be ineffably important in pursuit of that pivotal meeting with executives of a curious, wisely opportunistic studio.

FUNDING: With funds we can authenticate the quality of the envisioned film. Being realistic – it is unlikely that a studio will jump at the opportunity to make a costly film as soon as the campaign has succeeded. If this is the case, we initiate...

A local team and I will use the funds to film a high quality, lovingly crafted unofficial trailer for Halfstone across New Zealand

This will be used as a ‘proof of concept’ for a viable feature film

The trailer's sole purpose will be to knock everyone’s socks off.

We will aim to be in meeting rooms with studio execs soon after release, with the completed screenplay in hand. From there, we will continue a TIRELESS PUSH for a feature film.

Within the trailer will be a whole other world – The Narathlands.

Funds will be utilized for these key production areas:

  • COSTUME CREATION – It is fundamental that costumes are made to look authentic on screen. They will be detailed, well-fitting and show signs of natural wear and tear.
  • TRANSPORT – Traveling throughout New Zealand to film in beautiful locations with a crew inevitably costs money. It can be a very complicated logistical undertaking. We are based in Wellington City in the North Island. Fortunately, the old family home is located in the heart of the South Island and my brother has offered the use of his house in Invercargill, which will help minimize storage and/or hefty accommodation costs.
Location, location, location.
Location, location, location.
  • EQUIPMENT – It’s very important to have dependable cameras, boom mic, dollies, portable lighting, etc. One of our crew has a Phantom 4 Pro drone = Journey scenes galore.
  • PRACTICAL AND VISUAL EFFECTS – Part of what will make or break an excellent trailer is whether or not the magic and creatures feel real. In the trailer we need to show that we mean business and make sure nothing comes across as amateurish.
  • ACTORS AND EXTRAS – Ultimately, it’s all about exciting characters. A portion of the budget will go toward ensuring we work with talent who embody the story’s characters and who convey a spirit for adventure.
  • VARIOUS POST-PRODUCTION EXPENSES – significant focus on the audio department.

NOTE: Footage in the campaign video will not be used for the trailer.

A full list of crew for the trailer will be announced at a later date. There are plenty of talented and enthusiastic filmmakers in Wellington and beyond. Many have already expressed interest in the project.

Stéphane Charmoillaux will remain involved in the project, at least as a mentor. He directed and edited our campaign video and is in a league of his own.

Look at that focus.
Look at that focus.

Daniel (me) will create a storyboard for the trailer, co-direct and influence the overall tone.

We can get it done.
We can get it done.

Abe Cooper has an interest in capturing stunning landscapes for documentary film, and will be involved in the trailer as a cinematographer. He will also lend his knowledge to the creation of our production videos.

Abe. Always grinning.
Abe. Always grinning.

Friends and family will help me every step of the way, making sure I don't let myself down or the thousands of fantasy fans around the world who will want to see something freakin' spectacular.

Pre-production for the trailer will take place throughout New Zealand’s winter and filming will begin in spring when the landscapes here are once again oozing with WOW.

Folks, this is going to be a long, uphill battle, yet it’s one worth fighting. Has fantasy not always been about a journey from small beginnings to something greater? Let’s begin one of those journeys now.

ALSO INCLUDED: Limited 'A DAY ON SET' reward.

The estimated delivery date for all rewards is set as March 2018 - when we hope to release a trailer for Halfstone. However, parts of a reward such as the PDF version of the novel, the digital map and music files can all be delivered much earlier.

High fantasy can sometimes feel over the top, impossible, detached from reality... but really I think the reason we love it so much is because some part of these stories truly resonate with us. They confront the fact that a part of us wants to be there, not here - off on some magnificent adventure.

My inspiration for writing Halfstone was that when I was a growing up, the Narathlands did exist around me. And now when I travel home I want to feel like I did when I was young - imagining temples and dragons beyond the mountains.

A feature film is the ultimate way to capture this feeling visually, with characters that we relate to as adults in worlds that remind us of our childhood imaginings.

If we put our all into this Kickstarter campaign we have the chance to see one of these films made again with the love and care that the genre deserves.

Childhood in the Narathlands.

Risks and challenges

Upfront: It is very, very, VERY hard to get studio interest and funding for a feature fantasy film - precisely the reason we're running this campaign - to change that. We want to prove that thousands of people want to watch them. We also want to show just how great they can look on screen, which is why it's highly likely that we'll need to make a trailer for Halfstone ourselves.

Even if the trailer is great and the screenplay is better than great, there might still be little studio interest for a long time, perhaps never. Even so, it is simply never worth giving up.

Backers are promised a polished trailer for the film, all rewards selected, and an unyielding campaign to one day have Halfstone made into a feature film. It CAN be done.
