About

Basically, da-noo is a game for kids where they have to match cards boosting their memory skills while practicing their English & Spanish vocabulary.

A few weeks ago, my 6 years old niece, whose native tongue is Spanish, was having some problems with her English homework.

As a kid, I remember that games worked very well for me whenever I needed to learn something. I went to buy some games for her, but there wasn't anything I liked...

Pretty much every game I found reminded a 90's clipart set plus they only came either in English or Spanish, and since most of the time she learns both words (English / Spanish) at the same time I thought it was important to have both .

So I decided to make one myself.

With the help of my girlfriend who is also a designer, I tried to improve the way my niece and other kids could associate words in English or Spanish with their meaning as well as between them.

After testing some ideas, we found that a very good way to do it was with a memory game of matching card but with a little twist.

The cards of da-noo are not only more useful to remember the meaning of the words, they are more beautiful.

Originally this was only for my niece, just something to help her practice her vocabulary.

We printed several designs and tested even more alternations until we got something we were happy and that worked for her.

After some people saw the game, they wanted us to print them a set... other said it was a really good idea.

Thanks to this positive response we decided to step it up and print a proper version.

As for the game mechanics, it is almos like regular memory games but with a couple of differences.

In regular memory games you lay the cards in a random order upside down and then try to find the pairs turning 2 cards at a time.

The first difference is that there are no pair here, instead of using pairs of matching images, we are using trios.

That way we can relate all 3 together:

1) Spanish word

2) Drawing

3) English word

Each of the trios fit together in a mini puzzle kinda way to enhance the relationship of the set in the mind of the kids.

Shapes and words aren't the only visual cues, the colors also create a correlation between the main word, the translation and the meaning.

That way even if you have doubts about the meaning of the word, the drawing and the color give you visual cues for you to follow.

The second difference is that the back side is also different, this is to make it easier to match the trios and to avoid that you get 3 english word instead 1 of each.

There are 6 main decks, each one with a specific subject or category and with 12 sets of trios:

1) Colors

2) Numbers

3) Fruits

4) Animals

5) Things

6) Shapes

216 cards in total.

I would like to that it has a deep and meaningful meaning, but truth to be told, I just liked the sound.

It sounds like a good name for an elephant and they're popularly associated with good memory so it seemed like a good fit.

English and Spanish are two of the most widespread languages in the world, so understanding both open up huge possibilities, as you are able to visit a huge percentage of the countries.

Thanks to being bilingual, I've been able to travel to several countries with a pretty decent comunications skill set. But it's not only my opinion.

As for April 1, 2017, CNN estimates that the US has the second Hispanic population in the world, only exceeded by Mexico's. (You can read it here)

Even if you don't travel it still give you access to resources like books, movies, music, videogames, etc. Than otherwise would be hidden from you.

Even though we think these two are a great starting point, we would like to expand the project even further by adding a few more languages with the stretch goals.

For the original version (The one we did for my niece), we included a French version and we wanted to include it as well as more languages, but the cost was too much so it wasn't an option.

That's why we think a digital version would be better.

We can develop a virtual version of the game where adding different languages would be a breeze.

Also adding hearing aids like the correct pronunciation of each word.

Risks and challenges

To be honest this is a very straightforward project.

For the main part, we only need to refine the designs and pay the printer. All the assets are designed by us, so there aren't big risks involved.

If we reach the $30,000 mark... for the release of the app we will need more people involved (iOS & Android developers) but since I've been working with several developers for a few years now, and even lead a few teams, there's no problem there either.
