Hi Kickstarter! Almost 6 years ago, we launched the Glif, a tripod mount for the iPhone 4, on Kickstarter. The response to our campaign was incredible, and it allowed us to build our company, Studio Neat. Since then, we have released several updates to the Glif, but we are back where we started, on Kickstarter, to launch the best version yet.
The landscape for smartphone photography has changed dramatically since we launched the original Glif in 2010. With each successive smartphone, the camera is getting more and more incredible. The smartphone has become a legitimate tool, for photographers, filmmakers, and mobile journalists. So our goal is simple: to create the best tripod mount for smartphones, period. To do that, we are focusing on three areas.
1: An innovative quick release mechanism.
Current tripod mounts on the market today fall into one of two categories: screw, or spring. Screw mounts work like a vise; they allow for a secure grip, but are slow and cumbersome to operate every time you want to take your phone in and out of it. Conversely, spring mounts are quick to load and unload, but they have a flimsy grip and are not secure at all. We wanted to create a mount that is the best of both.
The solution we came up with took several rounds of iteration and engineering. The quick release lever, when opened, allows the jaws to move freely, making it easy to quickly load or remove your device. Here is the clever bit: when you close the lever, it automatically tightens around your device, resulting in a super secure connection. It's quick, and secure.
2: Portrait and Landscape
Very few tripod mounts on the market today can support a device in both portrait and landscape orientations. With things like panoramic photos, Periscope streams, and Snapchat, smartphones have legitimized the once-smirked-at portrait orientation. The Glif has a side mounted tripod mount, which allows devices to be mounted directly in portrait orientation.
And speaking of that side mounted tripod mount...
We want you to consider the Glif as the starting point, the base, of your mobile photography rig. We want it to be a flexible tool that caters to your needs. As such, the Glif has a total of 3 tripod mounts, one on the bottom, one on the side, and one on the top. These allow you to add additional accessories, like a microphone or light.
Speaking of accessories... we are introducing two!
Not every situation calls for mounting your smartphone on a stationary tripod, and the hand grip provides a much more comfortable way to shoot freehand, especially if you have additional accessories attached. The hand grip is lovely, milled from solid cherry hardwood. It has an additional tripod thread on the bottom as well.
A wrist strap is crucial for that added bit of security when you are shooting freehand. Dan used a prototype when he went zip-lining in the jungles of Jamaica and it worked great. Attach the wrist strap to the bottom of the hand grip, or just attach it directly to the Glif, as a way to add a bit of security and comfort. It is made from durable paracord and leather. The Glif, hand grip, and wrist strap are all tough, robust, and built to last.
What Devices Can the Glif Hold?
The Glif can hold devices roughly in width from 58 mm to 99 mm. This is essentially the range of a naked iPhone SE to an iPhone 6 Plus with a really thick case on it. In all likelihood, your device will fit.
We have been working on and improving the Glif as a product for the past 6 years, and have been working on this version for the last several months. Through countless iterations, we are super happy with the design, and think you will love it too!
Why We're on Kickstarter
As usual with these types of products, there is a considerable upfront investment needed to create the multiple molds for injection molding. We have spoken with and received quotes from our manufacturer here in the US, and they are ready to start production if this campaign is a success. As with all of our other Kickstarter campaigns, we want to take you along on the journey of bringing a product into existence. We will be posting numerous update videos, which will document the manufacturing process, and we will be discussing everything in depth on our podcast, Thoroughly Considered.
We hope you will join us in this campaign to create the best tripod mount ever. We can't do it without your help, so please, hit the green button on the right to become a backer and help bring this into reality.
Thanks and have a great day!
Risks and challenges
To date, we have successfully funded and fulfilled 5 (!) Kickstarter projects. Each has brought their own challenges and obstacles, and we foresee the same for this one. We hope our track record proves we are capable of overcoming these inevitable challenges in order to bring the new Glif to market. Our manufacturer here in the US (in South Dakota) is already lined up and ready to go, and we have worked with them many times in the past, so we are confident moving forward if this project is funded.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
