About this project
About Krzysztof Komeda
The Polish composer Krzysztof Komeda is one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time. Best known for his film scoring work -- notably, Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby -- he was also responsible for creating the avant-garde jazz scene in Poland. His album Astigmatic, released in 1965, is considered to be one of the greatest achievements in avant-garde jazz. Sadly, Komeda passed away in 1969 at the age of 38, and the jazz world was robbed of a composer with a unique voice and with so much more to say. Since then, many have recorded albums of Komeda's compositions, dedicated to his memory and to maintaining an interest in his music.
My name is Daniel Volovets and I am a 20-year-old classical, flamenco, Brazilian, and jazz guitarist. I have been studying guitar for over 13 years and perform professionally throughout Minnesota. I have recorded 3 CDs and maintain a YouTube page (http://www.youtube.com/bulerias2005), currently with over 120 videos. I'm also a neuroscience/pre-med major at the University of St. Thomas, and aspire to balance careers in medicine and music.
About the Project
Since discovering Komeda, I have arranged his compositions for both solo guitar and as duet pieces with my 16-year-old brother Adrian Volovets, who plays the flute, tenor and soprano saxophones, violin, and piano. Soon after uploading our rendition of the Komeda composition Ballad for Bernt to YouTube (the video above), I was contacted by Komeda's sister, Mrs. Irena Orlowska, who enjoyed our rendition and wondered if we could record an album of her brother's compositions.
It would be a great honor to record such an album, but I need your help. $2,000 would be enough to fund the recording/duplication of the CD, as well as the creation of its artwork/design and promotional materials. The final album will feature guitar solos and duet arrangements (guitar + saxophone, guitar + flute, guitar + violin, etc). I will be arranging the Komeda compositions especially for this record.
Please help honor Komeda's great legacy!
Risks and challenges
At this point in time, I have arranged three compositions by Komeda: "Ballad for Bernt" (http://www.youtube.com/watch…), "Theme from Rosemary's Baby" (http://www.youtube.com/watch…), and "Crazy Girl" (not yet recorded). The final album will have anywhere from 10 to 15 tracks -- the majority of arranging and recording will likely take place this summer. Considering the time needed to record, mix, master, and duplicate the album, there is a chance that the album may not be released until about a month after the estimated release date. I will do my absolute best to meet the deadline!
I will be posting regular updates regarding the arranging, recording, mixing/mastering, and duplication process on my official Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Daniel-Volovets/113655780499) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/danielvolovets) pages.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
