My name is Daniel Glass. I've been a professional drummer for the last 20 years, having worked with Royal Crown Revue, Brian Setzer, Bette Midler, Gene Simmons, Liza Minnelli and many others. To learn more about me, click here.
The Century Project is the culmination of a journey begun a dozen years ago, when I started researching the evolution of the drums and the way we play them. Through my research, I came to a startling conclusion: if we understand more about the drum set, we can understand the origin of every style of popular music we play and listen to today: jazz, rock, blues, hip-hop, funk, reggae, etc. To learn more about my research, click here.
Over time, I took all this research and turned it into a clinic presentation. The clinic takes audiences on a 100-year thrill ride, from 1865 at the end of the Civil War right up to 1965 and the dawn of the British Invasion. It shows how drums and pop music evolved hand-in-hand, and how, by 1965, the drumming blueprint that we still follow to this day had been cemented.
In turning The Century Project into a DVD, my goal is to create a compelling, multi-media, interactive, lecture/performance that takes the typical (dare I say "boring") conception of "history," and turns it on its ear. As in my clinics, I aim to create a world that helps modern musicians realize just how much they have in common with their forebearers . . . a world that shows how the pioneers of the past "rocked" just as hard as rock stars of today.
For the last two years, I've been actively working with DrumChannel.com to bring The Century Project to life. In order to make my vision a reality, however, I need to raise $12,000, just over half the funds necessary to produce the DVD. If I'm able to raise that amount here on Kickstarter, DrumChannel has agreed to kick in an additional $10,000, allowing us to start production in early 2012.
