About

At three years old, my daughter Morgan always wanted a story at bedtime. She wasn't fussy about going to bed, but her story time was non-negotiable. But she never wanted a story from a book. She always insisted on my wife Jennifer or I coming up with one on the spot. I, always trying to be the funny dad(and failing on most occasions), would come up with a story full of rude noises and childish antics. Needless to say, none of those stories would be considered print-worthy material.

On one of the rare nights our newborn son wasn't awake and needing his mother, Jennifer tucked Morgan into bed and told her a story. Unlike my admittedly unimaginative stories, Jennifer's tale involved magic, princesses and far away kingdoms. She later returned to our bedroom in a quiet, thoughtful manner. She asked me to listen to the story she just told Morgan and give her my thoughts on it. She repeated it for me and after she was finished, I only had one thing to say:

"That needs to be published."

Many years and many drafts later, our middle-grade fantasy novel Princess Rose and the Quest of the Golden Gown is nearly complete. But as first-time writers, my wife and I have taken this story as far as we can. Now, we need your help.

First, the Story...

On her 13th birthday, Princess Rose of Ametheria receives a mysterious map as one of her gifts. Unbeknownst to her, this map will be the catalyst that will set her on a quest to find the enchanted pieces of her coronation gown in order to become queen of her land and to keep the kingdom from falling under a curse. With her best friend Joseph, her prized horse Wisher and a talking cat named Snowflake, she will travel up mountains, through deserts and over oceans encountering mermaids, a troll, pirates and many other wonders as her physical and mental endurance are challenged by the obstacles and puzzles she must overcome to obtain her prize.

Self-Publishing

It is true that it’s now relatively simple to self-publish your book. But it isn’t just publication that we need your help with. You see, despite those many years and many drafts, we feel that the story isn’t yet where it should be in order to send it out to the masses. That’s where your contribution comes in.

In order for the book to reach its audience, we need funding for three things.

First, hiring an editor. Now, an editor does much more than point out spelling and grammatical errors. A good editor will also help an author keep characters consistent in their speech and actions, improve pacing in the writing and help find the author’s “voice” in the book. For our first book, Jennifer and I have chosen editor/author Mary Kole.

Mary Kole
Mary Kole

Ms. Kole is an editor with ten years of publishing experience and is the author of Writing Irresistible Kidlit. But just as important to Jennifer and I is her love for reading tales of fantasy.

The editorial service we wish to hire Ms. Kole for is her Full Edit package which consists of a complete, page by page edit focusing on creative feedback notes followed by a second stage of editing which serves as a final proofreading. This package is budgeted at $2700. Jennifer and I both feel Ms. Kole is the perfect editor we need to help make our story live up to its potential.

(Naturally, Ms. Kole is a busy editor so her involvement in this novel is subject to availability.)

Second, cover art. As voracious readers, Jennifer and I know what immediately attracts a person to a book: its cover (old sayings about "never judging" be damned). A mediocre cover can make a potential reader pass a great book by. A great cover, however, can make a person pick a book up off the shelf and to create this great cover Jennifer and I have chosen artist Catalina Murcia.

Catalina Murcia was borne in Bogotá Colombia and journeyed to the United States to study art. She became a professional illustrator and comic book artist and just recently graduated from the renowned Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art.  The cost of Ms. Murcia to create a great book cover is budgeted at $700. Check out two samples of her art below.

(As with Ms. Kole, Ms. Murcia has many projects underway so her involvement in this novel is subject to availability.)

Third, publication and promotion. Even self-publishing can cost what with minimal print runs and promotional copies, and Jennifer and I plan to put money toward print copies for book fairs/conventions and online advertising in order to give the book its best chance of finding an audience. We have budgeted $1100 for this (which will also cover Kickstarter rewards cost). Any funding we raise beyond our set budget will be applied to this category.

The bottom line is this:

Jennifer and I believe in our story and we want to give it the best shot it can possibly have in making Princess Rose’s journey come to life for readers everywhere. You can be a part of that.

Risks and challenges

This being our first self-published book, we have attempted to the best of our ability to factor in costs and delivery time for the final edit and publication of the book in order to set our delivery deadline to you. However, there is always the chance that the book's publication and rewards delivery will be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. We will keep you apprised of any delays.
