About

Games can get Kids to eat their Veggies!

I believe we can use games to make the world a better place - not just because games are fun, but because games train us in skills, attitudes, and knowledge that we can apply in other situations.

Oregano: The Veggie Card Game is a game that teaches you about the fruits and vegetables we eat! By playing this fun and simple card game, you will learn which parts of the plants we are eating when we eat a given fruit or vegetable, and you'll also learn which veggies are related!

How's it play?

Oregano is a simple card game where you match the central card to a card from your hand. Instead of matching by suit or number, the cards are organized into Plant Families, and Plant Parts. You can match a card to any other card in its Family, or to any card where we use the same part of the plant. Broccoli is in the Brassica Family - its relatives are Cabbage, Kale, Turnips, and others. When we eat Broccoli, we are really eating the Flower head, so we can also match it with Chamomile (the flowers of which are used to make relaxing tea), or any other Flower card.

It's a simple game! But it has a few tricks kids love. The game has some creative Skips and Wild Cards that are still immersed in the world of vegetable-growing. In our activities, we practice reading the information on each card as we play, practicing literacy as well as plant-recognition. I am always amazed at how fast youth pick this game up, and how well they retain the information afterwards! After only one playthrough youth are able to remember some of the veggies families and plant parts when we go back out onto the farm and find the plants in the rows, and I love seeing their faces light up when they connect theoretical knowledge to the real world. I think you will love to see their joy, as well.

 All Games are about learning

All games are educational, whether we realize it or not. Some games teach us colors and numbers, some games teach us how to cooperate with others, some games teach us how to gentrify neighbourhoods and artificially increase the cost of housing so that no one can afford to live there. I think that last one is a weird thing to teach, let alone to children. This game, and my other games, are intended to teach something better.

Food Access and ending Food Apartheid are important issues that affect the youth I work with in the after-school program I work for. I made this game for them, and they gave it its name. Teaching youth how to grow their own food gives them power over their lives, their health, and their communities. Professionally, I teach youth how to grow their own food both outside on an urban farm, and (weather forbidding) inside through games. The youth I work with benefit from both the physical application of their knowledge, and the ability to exercise their theoretical knowledge with all the games I have created for them. Oregano can be used with your kids, or in a classroom setting, to demystify Fruits and Veggies in order to encourage curiosity towards healthy food, instead of uncertainty and fear.

 $11,000

The game is already complete, but we can improve the quality!

If the project raises $11,000, we can upgrade the card-stock used so that the cards are less see-through! Blackcore is the highest quality card that will feel more substantial and won't "bleed" - as the kids say!

Why Pledge Now?

  • Receive the game at a lower price!
  • There is no plan for the game to go to distributors. You may not be able to find it locally!
  • Help get extra copies into the hands of kids across the US
  • Help spread the word now to get more people thinking creatively about Food Access and how it is impacting our youth

Creators

  • Trevor Hyde, creator and game-designer at Dandy Lion Games
  • Youth at SEEDS - youth at non-profit where Trevor works, who named the game, and put in many many hours of playtesting, laughing, and screaming.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge I foresee is on timing for production and delivery. I've budgeted an extra two months to account for the Chinese New Year holiday, which slows production in China. After doing my own research and comparing with other game-creators, it does not appear that there are any viable US-based manufacturers, which I'm disappointed about.
I am using a Kickstarter-approved fulfillment service to help streamline shipping, so it won't be me sending out 1000 copies of the game, but there may be some delays in getting copies sent to schools for those who choose to buy 2 copies and send one to a school of their choice.
