What is this?
- Why is it “pitter patter” and not “patter pitter”?
- The Queen’s handbag -- did you know that she uses it to talk in code?
- And you know turkeys? Here’s why they’re named after a country that they’re not actually from.
Stuff like that. It's fun to read, right? Wouldn't it make for a great video? I THINK SO TOO! So today, I’m launching a Kickstarter to fund a Now I Know YouTube series.
What’s in the videos?
Why tell when you can show? Here’s a preview episode! And no, the guy in the video isn’t me. It’s Matt Silverman. He’s awesome. You’ll see! Here's our first video, and I'm sure you'll like it. (I mean, otherwise, I wouldn't be doing this Kickstarter... right?)
I’ve written more than 1,000 surprising, strange, and interesting stories over the years and I’m always looking for other ways to spread the fun. Like the two books and even one of those fact-a-day calendar things. But video? That’s been a struggle. I’m not a video producer and in any case, it takes a ton of time to publish the email newsletter. So I can’t do this myself. I’ve talked to a lot of promising collaborators over the years, but those would-be channels all fizzled.
Except for this one. I’ve known Matt for years and a few months ago, we started talking, and then we started working. Now, I have a model that works. It just needs a push.
The $8,750 goal will fund the creation of ten more videos. We have two ready to go right now -- the one above and one I’ll be sharing in next week. After that, I plan to roll out another video every other week. . . until I run out. The hope: the videos get enough views that I can find other ways to fund Now I Know on YouTube..
I’m trying to keep the funding target low; as a result, there aren’t a lot of backer rewards.
$5: My gratitude. Honestly, I’m grateful that you’re reading this, so you probably would have gotten this for free. But free doesn’t get any videos made!
$10: Your name in the credits on any videos funded by the Kickstarter minus the first two (because they're going to probably be done before this ends). Depending on how many backers this gets, it may scroll by kind of fast, but it’ll be there.
$25: A handwritten (by me) postcard with a fun fact on it. It’ll be a sentence or two -- like a Snapple fact, not a 500-word essay. I’m limiting this to 100 people because it took me FOREVER to write Thank You notes after my Bar Mitzvah and one of those was enough. You’ll also get your name in the credits on the videos.
$50: A digital copy of the first chapter of a fiction novel I’m almost certainly never going to finish. It’s titled “Confessions of an Eighth Grade Candy Dealer” and the chapter runs about 700 words. You’ll also get your name in the credits on the videos. Because this is a digital thing, I’m not going to mail you the postcard -- if you want that, add $3 to your pledge amount.
$60: Matt will thank you on one of the videos. Your name, spoken on screen. (Cue angelic music here. In your brain, I mean, not on the videos.) We're limiting this to 20 people and this is limited to a real person's name, and not a fake name like "YourWebsiteName DotCom" or any nonsense like that. Oh, and you probably won't be the only person mentioned because, well, math: "up to twenty names" is often more than "no fewer than 8 videos."
$75: A signed copy of my first book, “Now I Know”. This is limited to 10 because I don’t have many copies left. You’ll also get the postcard, the Candy Dealer thing, and your name in the credits on the videos.
$75: A signed copy of my second book, “Now I Know More”. This is limited to 10 because I don’t have many copies left of this, either. You’ll also get the postcard, the Candy Dealer thing, and your name in the credits on the videos.
(I’m not offering a package of both signed books because I want to spread them around. Cool? Cool.)
$100. My grandmother’s baked ziti recipe. It’s pretty basic and super-simple and mostly comes out of boxes/jars, but it’s special to me. To be clear, I’m emailing you the recipe -- I’m not making it for you, and you’re responsible for buying the ingredients yourself. This also comes with a signed book (of my choosing -- really, it depends on what I have on the shelf), the postcard, and everything else.
$500: Sponsor an episode: Your brand will get a 5-second message at the end of one of the videos. (Max 10, obviously.) Normally, I’d have to sell this at more -- $500 doesn’t cover production of one video -- so consider this a Kickstarter Special. (Oh, and when I announce that video in the newsletter, you'll get a "brought to you by _____" mention there, too!) If you want to buy more than one of these, it's doable -- email me, we'll figure it out.
If this hits $8,750, we make ten more videos. And if it gets higher than that? More videos! Basically, each video is about $1,000, give or take. So $25,000 is 25 videos, $100,000 is 100 videos (and that would be AWESOME by the way), etc.
If it hits $2 billion, I’ll try to buy the Mets. In that case, there’ll be some more backer rewards.
Risks and challenges
This is the first Now I Know Kickstarter so there may be some bumps along the way. I really don’t know. I’m trying to keep it simple to avoid issues. You may not like my grandmother’s ziti recipe.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
