THE GAUNTLET RUN
A team of atypical heroes must rescue a damsel in distress. Violence, metahumor, and awesomeness in store? Welcome to the Gauntlet Run.
What is THE GAUNTLET RUN?
Atypical antiheroes. Entertaining villains. Whimsical meta-humour. Brutal, grounded, and intense combat. These are our promises for the GAUNTLET RUN, as established in our proof of concept film: GAUNTLET RUN: Origins. Within a few months of release, Origins was accepted into multiple festivals and garnered as many awards. The only way to go from here is to take it all the way and make the movie you deserve. We want GAUNTLET RUN to be the next big action series, and we'd love it if you joined us for the journey. Origins is already running around festivals throughout the world, and we have a second film finishing postproduction now: GAUNTLET RUN: Breach! So you'll have two references for our quality of work through low budgets before this campaign is over.
On the surface, the GAUNTLET RUN series is a martial arts/action comedy with a lot of craziness. But our goals are greater than just entertainment: we are committed to spotlighting diversity through our characters - across race, gender, and sexuality - as well as our commitment to creating compelling action. The GAUNTLET RUN shines a light on the entertainment industry's treatment of the action genre and the stereotypes of modern day action heroes.
In addition to providing strong representation of racial minorities and the GLBT community, this series is a love letter to all the stunt performers and fight choreographers in the industry who largely go unrecognized. To our Fight Family, we stand up for stunts!
The Gauntlet Run started when we made GAUNTLET RUN: Origins, our proof of concept film! This was shot for a grand total of $600 and is being used to establish two of our lead characters: Agent Bishop and Khan the Mercenary. But moreover, despite it just being a proof of concept, Origins has been making its way around festivals and winning awards! To date, we've come away from the LA Film Awards with BEST ACTION. TOP Indie Film Awards also saw fit to award us BEST ACTION, as well as BEST DIRECTOR and a nomination for BEST SHORT. The Genre Celebration Festival nominated us for BEST SHORT. Top Shorts gave us the BEST ACTION Honorable Mention and an awesome review. We've also been part of the official selections for the Film Society of Little Rock's Fistful of Shorts action movie festival, the Direct Short Online Film Festival, Iron Dragon TV ActionFest, and the Underground Indie Film Festival.
The above are our two stylized character posters from Origins. But the gang is getting some upgrades for the upcoming GAUNTLET RUN: Breach.
$9,500 is the bare minimum we need to complete this film. But through additional funding, we can deliver even more awesomeness your way! Here are what a few stretch goals can do for the film, as well as some cool stuff for you!
$10,000 - Local Theatre Premiere! We'll rent out a local movie theatre and play ALL of the Gauntlet Run! That's all three: Origins, Breach, and THE GAUNTLET RUN!
$11,500 - Festival Run! Not as fun as some of the other stretch goals, but equally important. Submitting to festivals can cost quite a bit of money, and this amount of extra funding is needed for us to ensure THE GAUNTLET RUN heads to as many festivals as possible this year!
$12,500 - The Slo-Mo Segment! We'll rent out a professional grade slow motion cinema camera for a day to shoot a slo-mo sequence of total badassery.
$15,000 - Local Stage Combat Workshop and Donation to the SAFD! Want to learn how the Gauntlet Runners have been pulling off all these badass fights? Curious what goes into fight design, or how character design affects action? Six will host a local GAUNTLET-specific workshop. Contributing at the $150 tier or above ensures your spot, though space is limited and reservations will be taken on a "first come, first served" basis. You are responsible for your own transportation and board. Non-backers are eligible to register for the workshop for a fee, which then goes into a donation for the Society of American Fight Directors.
$18,000 and Above - Equipment Upgrades and Donations to the SAFD and local theatre education! Of course we want to rent out a better camera and better sound equipment (as well as hiring the specialists to use them) to fully realize our vision. But beyond that, we really just want to promote education in stage combat and stunt work. Any profits beyond production/post-production costs and reward fulfillment will go straight into lump donations to the Society of American Fight Directors and local Memphis theatre/film programs centered around stage combat and stunt work. This one's for the Fight Family.
Risks and challenges
Supporting filmmaking in general has some risk. "Will they actually make it? Will it happen?" But Six and the Dance Nocturnal team have an excellent record of realizing their vision and completing their projects accordingly. Our previous projects, GAUNTLET RUN: Origins and I AM SPARTAN, were both completed and are travelling around film festivals worldwide. They have been quite successful in their current run and are continuing to rack up the awards. Check out the details at www.thelegendarysix.com/about and subscribe to our mailing list!
The biggest challenge we face, in addition to funding our project, is the postprocessing after the film is shot. Music licensing costs a fair amount, and we have to get just the right songs to truly nail the atmosphere. Most of the special effects will be practical, but there is some call for digital editing using stock footage.
Once the film is completed, the remaining funds go into film festival submissions and marketing. Be ready for the GAUNTLET RUN!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
