About this project
We're Making a Documentary About Inclusive Dance in East Asia
This spring, Alito Alessi, our Artistic Director, and Karen Daly, a DanceAbility teacher, cancer survivor, and wheelchair-user, are traveling to Mongolia, Indonesia and the Philippines as 'Arts Envoys' of the U.S. State Department!
We're going to film this exciting adventure as Alito and Karen connect with local communities and create spaces where people of ALL abilities can express themselves in new and creative ways through dance.
This is where you come in!
We are raising funds through Kickstarter to offset some of the travel and equipment expenses for the filmmaker. Alito and Karen's expenses are already paid for, but the filmmaker's are not. We need your help!
Remember - with Kickstarter we only receive your donations if we reach our goal. We really appreciate your help!
(Do you know someone who might be interested in making this documentary? Write us at email@example.com - we are still taking applications!)
Join us in creating and sharing what will truly be an inspirational documentary.
When finished, viewers of the completed film will:
- Witness the transformational power of the DanceAbility method – which brings people together, with and without disabilities, through dance – as Alito and Karen engage with local individuals and community organizations as cultural ambassadors of the United States!
- Hear Alito share stories about overcoming challenges to become a Guggenheim Fellow, Fulbright Senior Specialist, and Ashoka Senior Fellow!
- Listen to Karen tell about the journey from childhood cancer survivor and amputee to DanceAbility dancer and teacher!
Please read about the different pledge levels on the right side of this page and pledge what you can. WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT! Everyone who pledges will be sent periodic emails to update you on the film's progress.
(The estimated delivery dates do not apply to delivery of the DVD of this documentary. So many factors go in to finishing a project like this - it's difficult to estimate a date. But don't worry, when it's finished we'll proudly send you a copy!)

Risks and challenges
We are working on a very compact time schedule, as Alito and Karen leave for this adventure at the end of April. There is a risk of not finding a perfect match from among our film-maker applicants--with a schedule that aligns with the set dates. Thus there is a risk that we will only be able to acquire video footage shot locally by the participating cultural organizations.
Have no fear! We can either complete this great documentary by putting together the various footage acquired locally, or:
Alito travels internationally multiple times per year, and we will do whatever it takes to get powerful stories on film from diverse populations for you and the world to see.
Also, we could decide to film additional footage in other countries; and editing can be a lengthy process, but we will be upfront with you about our challenges as we we work through them! We will continue pursuing other funding avenues to bring the documentary to wide distribution in premier film festivals.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
As DanceAbility International is a registered charity, your donation is tax-deductible. If you choose to receive "No Rewards," your whole donation is tax-deductible. If you choose a reward, the value of your donation above the value of the reward, is tax-deductible. Please check with your tax preparer for details. For example, let's say you pledge $25, and you want to receive the 4 digital downloads. The downloads are worth $2 each for a total of $8. So your pledge of $25, minus the value of your purchase, $8, equals $17. You can still claim a $17 charitable donation on your tax forms. Our charity is a registered 501(c)3 organization, and our Employer Identification Number, or EIN, is 94-3030030. We will send out charitable donation receipts at the end of our fundraising period, in late April or early May
