Unlike other systems using rails or plates, the Focus Buddy is designed as a friction drive focus device using many custom components, creating a simple light weight assembly (under 6.5ozs).
The FOCUS BUDDY turns a DSLR into a viable "run and gun" camera. By changing the direction of the focus ring from left and right to forward and back, focusing becomes intuitive. Rolling the wheel forward changes the focus from near to far.
**User will need to bolt the focus-wheel to the bracket before use. (Bolt & nut included.) This keeps your shipping cost to a minimum.
This system will work with most DSLR's and lenses up to 150mm.
**Not intended for use with Panasonic pancake lenses due to the lack of clearance. Our next product will address that issue (should be ready in June 2013.)
My name is Dana Ray Denton and I own VizionQwest Productions. With my 14 years experience as a corporate and wedding photographer (both still & video) I've tried many DSLR's and found that keeping manual focus was almost impossible. I developed the FOCUS BUDDY prototype by sourcing raw materials (some proprietary, some off the shelf) and contracted with local machine shops, manufacturers and suppliers. I also have a background as a purchasing agent and production manager in many areas, from industrial pumps to manufacturing CD's. Field tests of the prototypes by other photographers resulted in positive reviews and valuable feedback. Their encouragement prompted my decision to enter the production phase and bring the "Focus Buddy" to market.
GOAL: My goal is to provide a low cost focus solution for photographers & filmmakers using DSLR type cameras. This includes hybrid cameras like the Panasonic, Olympus and Sony Mirrorless.
The brackets are cut and slotted with a CNC machine, radiused and shaped, then powder coated. The Focus-Wheel bearings and spacers are inserted and checked for clearances and rolling resistance. Final assembly and inspection is completed and units are packed for shipping from my home workshop. Production timeline is two weeks from order to shipping.
Q. Will this work with any DSLR.
A. The FOCUS BUDDY system works with most DSLR and Mirrorless cameras. It should work with lenses up to 150mm (your mileage may vary.)
Q. Will this work with pancake (short) lenses?
A. Some of the short pancake style lenses don't have the clearance to use this system. The FOCUS BUDDY PANCAKE EDITION will be out in July of 2013 if interest warrants.
Q. Is the FOCUS BUDDY easy to set up?
A. Yes it is. Roll the gripper ring onto your lens' focus ring, Screw on the Focus Buddy, Adjust the tension of the focus wheel and gripper ring, and your done. Five minutes, tops.
Q. What if my gripper ring breaks
A. These should last a year or two, but some people are hard on equipment. Replacements will be available for $3.00 each plus shipping. All parts of the Focus Buddy System will be available and easily replaceable.
Q. Is the Focus Buddy built rugged?
A. The build quality is industrial strength. This should outlast your next two cameras. Feel free to email email@example.com if you have further questions.

Risks and challenges
This project will roll out on time. All the parts are available. I enjoy a challenge. I"m confident this product can be made in large quantities. I have two machine shops, a gasket maker and a polyurethane manufacturer on board. Economies of scale will eventually bring down the cost per unit. This will retail around 70.00
Thank-you for your interest in the Focus Buddy
