About

The world of cameras is going in the direction to increase the number of pixels, increase the number of cameras and their sensitivity. Camera manufacturers use millions of pixels/sensors and complicated lens systems to capture images. However, surprisingly it is possible to capture an image using a single pixel sensor, without complicated optics. 

The working principle of the single pixel camera is very simple: Light from different angles is directed to a sensor, which records the amount of light over time. One direction a time. Imagine that you are looking through a long tube. To discover your surroundings you look around through the tube and try to remember what you see.

Instead of rotating the whole camera/tube, we simply look through a mirror, which can be electronically tilted in X-Y direction. The whole scene is scanned and the intensity over time on the detector is recorded. The image is then reconstructed using the recorded signal and known X-Y tilt of the mirrors over time. 

This kind of construction benefits from the all-mirror design. The silver coated mirrors reflect light in a very broad spectral range which makes it possible to record images also in  the near-infrared, mid/far-infrared (thermal), THz, microwave, RF, .. ranges. 

With the traditional, multi-pixel technique exotic materials and techniques are in use not just for the lens system but also for the pixel array sensors. These are of course very expensive and their pixel number is limited by the manufacturing technology. For instance thermal cameras have usually a maximum of 640x480 pixels (more likely 320x256) and cost USD 3,000-300,000.

..with a Single Pixel Camera, to change the type of camera (NIR, thermal, ..etc.), the user only needs to swap the single sensor. Easy and inexpensive.

- But why would someone need a camera like this?  

- To see the INVISIBLE!

 The objects reflect/transmit/absorb light differently. A fluid which is transparent in the visible, can be completely "black" in the near-infrared. Or the other way around, a sheet of material which is not transparent in the visible, can be transparent in the infrared.  

With thermal cameras it is possible to find heat escape points, see living objects in the dark. THz cameras see for instance through clothes and plastics. 

Going one step further, multispectral or hyperspectral cameras can be used to distinguish and identify the type of material the objects are made of. In a mine you can see the layer with and without ore. In the forest or plantation, you can identify healthy and dying organisms. At the coast, you can find those rocks which are non-typical for the coastline. 

The Single Pixel Camera opens these spectral windows to non-industrial users.

Such a versatile tool, but of course there is also a disadvantage of the technology. Recording of an image will take at least a few seconds or minutes depending of spectral range and number of pixels recorded. 

Lower recording speed is the trade-off for extended wavelength range and affordable price. 

We built a Proof Of Concept model using a 2D laser galvo-scanner, parabolic mirror, 800-1800nm InGaAs detector. Images were recorded with normal daylight conditions. See below example. 

This is only a basic model to show that the design will work. Before the final product-release, further improvements will be done on electrical noise reduction, resolution, signal amplification, optical arrangement, environmental brightness change compensation, optical fine adjustment.. and so on. There is a great potential here, even a simple arrangement can easily produce an image.


 The camera itself will have at least the following features:

  • Alignment CCD sensor with the possibility to overlay recorded images on the visible image.
  • Environment brightness sensor to compensate for changing lighting conditions during recording.
  • Battery module to make the camera mobile.
  • USB connection for data exchange and connectivity.
  • Easy to swap sensor modules (one sensor module in the Lite version), 
  • The SOTA version will  also have spectral filters, stand, a screen, controls, extra sensor modules (3x) and more..

Plans for future development. Following accessories will be available in the future to buy:

  • Hyperspectral detector (spectrometer) attachment.
  • Different wavelength lighting attachments for the better lighting of the scene .  
  • LIDAR attachment for recording scenes in 3D
  • Further detector modules.
  • Multispectral imaging detector and filter set plus software integration.

Risks and challenges

1) There is a big probability that the size of the device will be larger than the usual hand-held cameras. However, it will be still portable.
2) In low-light conditions the image might be noisy or blurred. Signal amplification, electronic noise filtering and software based improvements can be done to compensate for this. For close-up photos a fitting-wavelength light source can be used.
