Great ideas can come in any order.
And they can come at any time. Falling out of bed at 3AM to write down that dream or crazy idea is a part of creative life we all recognize. Expressing our creative ideas is what makes us human.
Writers, artists and creators like William Burroughs, David Bowie and Anais Nin have used cards to capture great ideas. With cards we can order and reorder all the chaos and wonder our imagination creates.
But finding the perfect cards for creative work can be hard.
So I decided to make my own.
A simple tool to inspire your creativity.
My name is Damien Walter. I've made my living as a writer for over twenty years. I've written short stories, feature articles, ad copy, viral blog posts, multi-million dollar funding bids, books, business plans, poetry, academic papers, radioplays, novels...you name it. And I use cards to help create them all.
After years as a professional writer I became fascinated by how we create. And, sometimes, how our creativity gets stuck and blocked. I began studying creativity itself, and even published some of what I learned with places like Oxford University Press.
I wanted to share the secrets of creativity I had learned. After a lot of thinking I realised the best way was to give people a simple tool to unlock creativity - creative cards.
How does such a simple tool work? Let me tell you.
Designed for capturing creative ideas.
Day dreams, computer code, Fortune 500 business plans & rock opera lyrics all have one thing in common. They come out of your head. Every deck of creative cards is designed to give you great tools to capture your ideas. I've designed exactly the cards I need for creative work, and I use them every day.
- A deck of 96 cards to structure creative ideas - 96 is a highly divisible number, organise your ideas into pairs, sets of 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12.
- High quality card stock for writing - 230gsm matt finish with great texture for all kinds of ink or pencil.
- Narrow, faint lines to keep your words up front - heavy print lines overpower handwriting making it hard to review ideas "at a glance".
- Reverse side dot grid adds utility - a dot grid can be used for writing but also sketching, diagrams and equations. And it lets you clearly see which side of the card is which.
- Creative cards are corner cut - crumpled corners quickly make cards hard to use. Creative cards are for ideas you will come back to again and again.
Keep your ideas organized and together
When I'm working on a story I don't go anywhere without my cards. Character arcs, scene structures and theme threads are all ready to lay out wherever I choose to work. Every deck of creative cards comes in a unique and beautiful box, the perfect size to carry everywhere.
Box and cards together have a wonderful "Thunk! Factor". You won't notice any weight in a shoulder bag, but in your hands creative cards have a nice heft that makes them a pleasure to play with.
Creative Cards - First Mulberry Edition
Mulberry, or "Saa" paper, has been hand made in Thailand for hundreds of years. It's a little rough, like wild cotton, with a unique organic texture. The Mulberry first edition creative cards are finished in coal dust grey, and are lined with hand-marbled Mulberry paper. Every sheet of marble paper is unique, and so is every deck of creative cards they are used to make.
Our 2nd variant design will be shown when we announce out first stretch goal.
Explore the art and science of manual & non-linear creativity.
I am fascinated by how we create, and with papers published by Oxford University Press and Cambridge, it's something I have worked to understand.
Creative cards are very simple. But working with them helps unlock our complex creative circuitry. Our hands are the most ancient creative tool we have. Writing with them, arranging, shuffling, laying out the ideas of our mind with them, changes how we create.
