I read your blurb, tell me more.
FATAL ATTRAKTION follows a young woman named Sophia as she deals with the relationships she has with her boyfriend, mother and best friend. In each of these situations conflicts arise about what is to be expected of her as a girlfriend, daughter and best friend. Confronted with these expectations Sophia must find ways to resolve the issue and find her true self.
Okay, so tell me about how this project came about and what you plan to do.
FATAL ATTRAKTION is a project of mine that I conceived of roughly three years ago. It had very humble beginnings as a modern retelling of Ossessione an Italian version of the crime novel The Postman Always Rings Twice before spiraling down an entirely different path. As an artist and a film buff, I really wanted my project to have a higher concept and speak to the nature and language of cinema. FATAL ATTRAKTION is now a project that explores, among other concepts, the way film communicates and distills the most intimate kinds of relationships we have in our life.
FATAL ATTRAKTION is also going to be a visual spectacle. Everything is being color coordinated, the attire is fashion-forward and the photography is being beautifully shot on VHS. I plan on making every set, carefully picking out wardrobe and designing every shot. You name it, I'm probably involved to some extent. My philosophy for film-making has always been "take care of the image, and it'll take care of you." My vision for this film has been crafted through my practice as an artist. I am extremely influenced by the trends and the attitudes of the internet. Various movements, whether it be the accelerationist theories behind vaporwave and health goth or the visceral 90's/early 00's throwbacks of soft ghetto and pastel grunge, all of these have intriguing places on the internet which I really want to make use of to help create a beautiful movie for my generation.
In accompanying these visuals I have enlisted the help of my mate, producer Coredor to create the score. His collective has worked with Little Pain and Chris Travis and Main Attrakionz amongst others, his experience and similar aesthetic flair will really help bring this picture full circle. Below is the soundcloud of his and his label's music;
Are there any films/artworks/novels/etc you would compare this to? What are your influences?
Sure, the best way I find that I can describe the essence of what this film is, is by saying it's a combination between Russian chavs, the internet and the movie Vanilla Sky.
My film and work in general is really influenced by 90's aesthetics, the internet and the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Harmony Korine's film Trash Humpers, really influenced the choice to shoot this film on VHS. I love the warm glow of VHS tape. There is such a mortal quality with VHS in that, the more you run over it, the more information you lose. That very real lifespan of VHS really resonates to me about my own life and how fragile it can be.
Below are some images from the films I've made so far. You can watch them at citizenfilms.com.au:
That's all good, but why should I back this project?
This is a high-art film concept. Trying to get backing on a film like this is extremely difficult. If you believe in alternative cinema, in films that offer a different, authentic voice, if you believe in helping young, struggling artists then this your chance to be supportive. If you enjoy internet culture, art, fashion, music then this is a project made for you and it needs your help in being realized.
Alright, so if I back your project, where is the money going?
Initially funds will go into equipment hire and paying the actors. Essentially, your donations will help bridge the gap between the funds raised by myself, through working and saving, and those I've managed to secure from fund-raising in my family. Depending on how much more we can raise after that, the money will be going into anything and everything to help bolster the production values of this movie.
Whats in it for me?
Rewards! Obviously funding here on Kickstarter will allow me to be able to give back to you guys if funding goes through. Everything from stickers to even invitations to my premier screening are up for grabs, so please check them out! I've try to make these rewards really affordable, so that everyone can get something whilst also making it worthwhile for me get the funds I need to make my dream come true.
I also believe that intellectual property should be free for everyone to consume. This film will be free for everyone to view online on Youtube and other video streaming platforms. This movie is not about making money for me, it's about expressing something I think will really resonate with this generation, and those succeeding it. I also want to reward those who do purchase a DVD or Digital copy. So if you do, you will get special perks like behind-the-scenes featurettes and directors commentary as well as have the movie a month in advance of its general release.
Sounds great, when are you planning on shooting/finishing this project? When can I expect my rewards?
We plan on starting a ten day shooting schedule early July. After that it's straight into post production. If you've ordered just a sticker or a poster we will have those out by August. If you order a copy of the movie it should be ready by Early October/November. This will also be the period for the cassette tape delivery. We will be trying to get it out there ASAP though. All reward tiers come with a sticker so in order to avoid confusion, and to make sure you get what you paid for, we will send you all your rewards at once. So if you paid for a copy of the movie, poster, cassette, soundtrack they will be sent when the movie is ready to be delivered.
Risks and challenges
There are a lot of risks that come when making a movie. Even the big studios can make major mistakes. I run the risk of being rained-out, crew getting sick, equipment not working, the list goes on. That being said, I have been preparing by saving money and preparing plans since last year and am continuing to make preparations so that all goes smoothly. I've written a movie that I believe is perfectly manageable with my budget and can be shot in the time I've allocated for this project. I've scouted a really good, creative team some of who have extensive film-making experience. Along with this talented team of enthusiastic artists and my vision and organization skills I should be able to deliver the desired project in an efficient manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
