About this project
What is Flute?
At its core Flute is a love story. It centers on a teenaged boy by the name of Toby, the oldest kid at an orphanage. He reads his fellow orphans stories about magic and love and wishes he too could have his own wondrous adventure. Little does he know that he soon will but only with the help of a young girl, a flute player and a dark secret that threatens the fate of their village.
On top of the love story that begins to surface throughout the film it will also incorporate themes of family and friendship (other forms of love). It's something that will be kindhearted and appropriate for young children but with enough story and emotional depth for the older viewers.
I think its about time we had a gay fairytale, even if it's just a small one. On the surface it will be an animated film for kids about two boys much like the prince and princess stories we see every day. But on top of that it will be something truly beautiful and artistic. Something from the heart that I hope transcends all ages.
The essential plan is to create a short animation somewhere between fifteen and thirty minutes. It will be entered into animation film festivals in hopes of reaching a wider audience or possibly catching the eye of a larger company that may be interested in pursuing a full-length version.
Right now I'm in the writing/storyboard phase. Here you can see a roughly animated storyboard for the potential film.
Why I need you!
For years I've attempted short animations with very little money knowing with just a bit more help I could create something truly magnificent. With your help and the help of other artists this can be made a reality and you'll also get to see something you might be dying to see.
The money will be used for the construction of sets, puppets (sculpting faces, armatures, etc.), getting additional modelers, hiring 2D animators for certain scenes, commissioning additional concept art, voice actors and a musician for the final score along with many more things. The rough puppet designs in the video above and image below are nowhere near the quality I'd like them to be. I need fully articulated, beautifully designed characters and that costs money.
I've set $3,000 as the minimum goal but the more money this project collects, the better and more detailed the film will be and the more artists I can get on board.
So what do you say? Are you with me?
Risks and challenges
Of course animation doesn't work like magic (yes, in a way it does) but this will be a long process, much of which I'm taking on all my own. Budget is a key factor, the bigger budget I receive the more artists I can commission for work. Time may become an issue as I'm a full time student as well as employed but I figure we'll tackle that hurdle when it comes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
