Well, It happened to us... all of us! After an incredible 6 month sold out run at The AMAZING Whitefire Theatre, in L.A., run by Bryan Rasmussen, our Director, Jim Fall (Trick, The Lizzy McGuire movie), myself and our 5 cast members, Alex Skuby (Santa Clarita Diet, King of Queens, The Fosters), Mo Collins (Fear The Walking Dead, MADtv, Lady Dynamite), Robbie Mangiardi, Peggy Maltby Etra (Seinfeld, Groundlings), Jessica Pohly (Goliath, Groundlings) and Drew Droege became a family and we kept extending and extending the show. So many people came up to us and said, “this is so great! You need to be on Broadway!” and that's meant the world to us as it's always been our dream to.
When a shocking furniture accident claims the life of his Uncle Max, LA actor Doug Elling (Alex Skuby) must work in his family business in Brooklyn to be confronted with not only his dysfunctional family, but what lead him to become an actor in the first place.
"DAMAGED FURNITURE is a "therapeutic comedy" very loosely based on my own Father who had a furniture business in Brooklyn. The play touches upon some other very serious subject matters that many of us can likely relate to: dysfunction, family issues, alcoholism, cancer, grievance, love, acceptance and also... how to cope (as Mo mentioned so brilliantly above in our video). Irene (Peggy Maltby Etra) confronts her therapist daughter, Gina (Jessica Pohly).
Doug (Alex Skuby) struggles to connect with his Dad (Robbie Mangiardi), but while they both talk, they don't hear each other.
Doug (Alex Skuby) and his sister, Gina (Jessica Pohly) get into an argument about stealing coffee from a hotel room that leads to comedic disaster.
We are planning on a minimum of a one month run (with one month of rehearsals) with the hopes of extending, as we did in L.A. This is the same formula we used before at The Whitefire, but certain things will be different in NYC and call for (much) more funding for things like:
1) Fly the cast, director, playwright/producer to and from New York; provide 2 months housing, per diem and transportation.
2) Secure a suitable Off-Broadway Theater for 4 weeks of performances in mid 2019.
3) Establish a rehearsal space for 4 weeks of rehearsal.
4) Hire experienced theater professionals including lighting design, set design, sound design, video projection, costumes, hair and makeup, stage managers, backstage crew and all the essential personnel necessary to put on a successful production worthy of theater savvy New York audiences.
We have a very important message to share and feel that it will somehow unite us all in ways. There's enough chaos everywhere as we know and it's quite overwhelming at times... but with us, our door's always open.
