FINAL DAY UPDATE!!!!
Greetings Soup Lovers!
We are SO grateful for your loyal Soupport as our core Soupthusiasts during this transition. And we acknowledge that just as your contributions are invaluable to us, we realize we are not going reach our original goal on the ALL or NOTHING platform of Kickstarter.
Because your dollars will now be invalid on Kickstarter, we'd truly appreciate your assistance! By extending your financial support to some of the other options we have provided below, we can still proceed with an alternate version of our soup storefront.
You don’t need to do anything to cancel your pledge on Kickstarter (any pledges made will simply not be processed since we didn’t reach our total goal), however, we do need everyone who wants to support Da Kind to please choose an option below that works well for you and keep this remodel alive:
Questions? Please call, we have lots of answers.
Dustin, Ariane, and the Stew Crew
We make Soup.
The Comfort Food of the entire planet.
Da Kind Soups is known for our healthy, delicious, and creative soups. In our little neighborhood soup shop, sustained by a community with souperb taste and attentive standards, we have been handcrafting our unique and nutritious soups in Evergreen, Colorado for over nine years. That translates to an enormous volume of soup that has been created daily in the Da Kind Soups stockpots by one person, Chef Dustin Speck.
If you’ve dined at Da Kind, you already know why our soup is special. There isn’t soup like this anywhere else. Chef Dustin Speck is well known for creation of consistently delicious and innovative food. Dustin's knowledge, years of experience, and his culinary skill and talent all go into the careful preparation of his soups.
It is this combination of quality ingredients, creative blending of flavors, and a truly skilled master chef that make the soups we deliver delicious, and yes, very special. Beyond the soup we are so proud to serve, we take an active role in caring for the community that we feed every day. With gift card and soups donations to our local schools, non-profits and our community food bank, Da Kind Soups has donated consistently back into our neighborhood since opening in 2008.
Beginning in Spring 2017, we will be expanding our kitchen to make our amazing soups available to soup lovers and their friends and family throughout the United States via our own Boil Bag Soup technology. Our unequaled product will remain the same, however the principal methods of delivery to the customer are changing. For this Concept Conversion we turn our full attention to the most efficient form of distribution, Boil Bag Soups.
What are Boil Bag Soups
Why is this important?
Boil Bag Soups: Fresh, handcrafted soups that are professionally vacuum-sealed in BPA-free bags designed for extreme temperatures. Accompanied by a fully approved, FDA compliant HACCP Plan (Hazardous Analysis of Critical Control Points) written by the owners, this ROP (Reduced Oxygen Packaging) Boil Bag Soup Program is exclusive to Da Kind Soups.
Boil Bag Soups provide the highest efficiency and safety in food preparation. Recommended heating of the Boil Bag Soups in a pot of boiling water is designed to be a risk-free approach that will avoid scorching the soup, with the added benefit of a clean pot ready to use again, saving both time and water!
You might be moved to call it life-changing: we call it: Thinking Outside the Bowl.
This Kickstarter Campaign is designed to help us make this Concept Conversion from a Fast Casual Restaurant to a Custom Kitchen designed exclusively to accommodate high-volume soup production.
How will we convert our business to meet the needs of an even larger soup loving audience?
We are expanding our kitchen and acquiring the new equipment that is necessary for the production of large volumes of our handcrafted soups. Our Fresh Boil Bag Soups, unique to Da Kind, will be available for purchase in our Evergreen storefront and through our ecommerce website. Additionally, our soups will be obtainable wholesale to local Colorado distributors including restaurants and healthy food stores.
What will your Kickstarter soupport of Da Kind Soups help us achieve?
By soupporting Da Kind during this major transition, you will help us quickly change from a Fast Casual Restaurant to a Custom Commercial Kitchen designed to provide the freshness and quality of small-batch cooking on a large scale.
Your much appreciated pledge dollars will be spent helping us expand our current kitchen and acquire the proper equipment needed to execute the Boil Bag Soup program.
REFRIGERATED MERCHANDISE COOLERS - $16,000 (2 units/$8K ea.)
Creating a renewed visual atmosphere in the space of our former dining room is fundamental to the appeal of the Concept Conversion. These two striking pieces of equipment are an essential aesthetic to the overall feel of a Colorado mountain kitchen in our Retail Storefront. Yet even more significant, is the capacity that nearly quadruples our current display area. With the increased space, the variety of soups and other Fresh Boil Bag products increases as well, offering customers a much broader selection.
BLAST CHILLER - $40,000
A Blast Chiller is an equipment unit designed to provide the rapid cooling of our number one product, soups. Because of its paramount importance, we focus a great deal of time and attention to food safety. Our FDA approved HACCP Plan requires the logging of food temperatures every hour. We currently maintain our logging activity by hand, which even for the current production level is quite extensive. This new Blast Chiller will efficiently streamline our important systems and increase our output of properly cooled foods so that we can meet the demand of our new endeavor safely.
REMODEL CONSTRUCTION - $22,000
The kitchen and storefront renovation will require remodeling to fit the new kitchen equipment, create a restyled image for the soup shop and to make better overall use of the space as a high volume kitchen. We’re all about bargain closeouts, recycled materials and doing things ourselves for quality, efficiency and as always, financial savings.
When is Dinner Ready?
(aka: What is the Timeline for your new enterprise?)
Our newly remodeled Evergreen storefront and high volume production kitchen is targeted to re-open in May 2017. In addition to many of your Da Kind Soups favorites, an expanding variety of new products and soup flavors in our select Fresh Boil Bags will be available for preparing at home.
These Soups and other Fresh Boil Bag products, home-grown straight from Dustin’s culinary mental catalog, will also be accessible for online ordering via our new website. During the remodel in April, we’re entering the data to our shopping cart. An extensive and thorough search of the Da Kind Soups product line will provide shoppers with detailed information about soups available and enables Soup Lovers to investigate wholesome delicious choices with broad options like gluten-free and vegan to more specific tastes like mushrooms and chili peppers. It will take longer to choose your favorite soup than it will take us to pack it up and have it delivered to you and your loved ones across the United States.
Soup is Kindness - Now available Coast to Coast.
Our motto is ~ Live A Kind Life ~ and supports us to remain focused on kindness in all that we do. We faithfully regard soup as a method to spread kindness into more homes and into more people’s lives.
More Soup is More Kindness for More People.
Risks and challenges
What are the risks and challenges that come with completing your project, and how are you qualified to overcome them?
For some folks, the idea of our selling soup in an old renovated 7-11 convenience store, was a pretty crazy one. True that. The thing that few knew back then, is that Dustin is the Master Soup Chef of his time. A consistent output of a quality product that people can rely on, built a solid reputation for trust.
His soups are simply and consistently the very best. There is a strong level of comfort and security we experience in how much our beloved town adores Dustin’s soup. A transition such as this comes with scary ideas that current customers will be upset with the changes we’re making.
A retail presence online and the wholesale side of the soup business is a new realm for us that is as exciting as it is scary. We’re accustomed to personally serving our Soup Lovers their favorite comfort food within the warm and friendly walls of Da Kind Soups.
How will we translate our Da Kind Soups culture out into the big online universe?
How do we convey to the rest of the World that Soup is the best meal on the planet and should be eaten daily?
These are the questions that keep us up at night.
Wrote a big business plan and reviewed it with our mentors in the finance and business development space.
Worked and reworked a lot of budget numbers with our bookkeeper. (Matt Pelan - who doubled as our video editor!!)
Jumped into the 21st century with an ecommerce website designed and implemented by website and graphic designer. (Sabina Espinet of Bluefish Studios)
Received lasting worthy advice and assistance from marketing strategist and social media ace (Valerie et al Breezy Hill Marketing) on how to develop meaningful relationships with new Soup Lovers and how to help current soup lovers stay engaged!
Invested in a digital marketing program that will help us by delivering souper cool digital advertising using a pay per click strategy to help get the word out beyond our closest Soup Lovers.
Implemented a plan to deliver soup wholesale to local businesses and trained a team member to take the lead on this program. By providing soup locally through a wholesale program, we give ourselves time to create online momentum for our Boil Bag Soups!
Construction? Check. We did a much bigger remodel ourselves 10 years ago, so this time we can focus just on making the kitchen ready to produce high volumes of healthy, fresh, hand-crafted soup. This time we’re doing it with two reliable team members, double the effort!
Soup Production? Check. Without other menu distractions, the kitchen can handle twice the volume it does now.
All that good stuff above, strong work ethic from a kind and dedicated Stew Crew with a mission to serve Dustin’s healthy and delicious soup to the masses encourages our confidence that the demand for Dustin’s soups will remain high and continue to grow with our local Colorado Soup Lovers as they have since we opened in 2008.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
