About

Return to the Land of Egypt...

...where Pharaoh's funeral barge sails down the Nile river as the Governors of the land build monuments to their fallen King's glory. This time, however, there's even more to do before Pharaoh can stand before Osiris – in addition to the monuments, the Governors must work together to construct a pyramid for the Pharaoh's sarcophagus. The temple priests stand ready to offer assistance, for a donation; and the palace guards can be encouraged to procure city benefits exclusive to the Governor who hired them; but can the Governors work together to complete the great pyramid in time for Pharaoh's arrival?

In The Box...

Everything in this expansion will fit in the base game box.
Everything in this expansion will fit in the base game box.
  • The Board Extension is double sided. The side with the 3x3 pyramid grid is for 2 or 3 players and the flip side has a 4x4 pyramid grid for 4 or 5 players.
  • The Pyramid Blocks are 16mm x 16mm x 12mm and made of wood. Each has a screen printed player color icon on the bottom so you can sort them by player.
  • The Debens are 2mm punchboard.
  • The Palace Guard tokens are wood with a white screen print on both sides.
  • The City and Boon cards are 310gsm Blackcore with a linen finish.

New Mechanics...

There are four main "new mechanics" in the Pharaoh's Pyramid expansion: Debens, Pyramid Blocks, Temple Donations, and Palace Guards.

  • Debens

Ancient Egypt did not have coins or currency, but they did have debens. A deben functions much like an I.O.U. issued by individuals or institutions to represent a particular value. Perhaps you traded a quantity of wine to a cattle rancher, but you had no room to hold cattle in your winery, so the rancher gives you a deben worth 6 cows as payment for the wine. Later, you contract with a stone fitter to have a new building constructed at your winery and pay him with the rancher's deben. The stone fitter can now go to the rancher to collect his cows.

Example of Deben Use
Example of Deben Use

Within Sailing Toward Osiris, a number of debens can be used to replace an equal number of grain, bricks, or stone tokens when you plan a monument or a pyramid block. It is important to remember that debens are NOT a resource and may not be used for any other transactions in the game. However, since they can be used freely to plan monuments and pyramid blocks, you'll have more of the grain, brick, and stone resource tokens available to do all the other things you want to accomplish.

You may collect as many debens as you like and you may hold them between seasons, but the total number of debens available in each game is finite and depends on the number of players. If you should receive debens and none are available in the supply, then you get none.

  • Pyramid Blocks

The major new mechanic is building Pharaoh's pyramid, located below the river on the board extension. As with monuments, it's a two-step process. First you plan the block by paying the resources noted in one of the two cartouches near the bottom of the board extension. Then, on a future turn in the same season, you build the block by moving it onto a valid space on the pyramid grid. A valid space is any ground-level square on the grid, or on top of any other blocks where your new block sits in the center of the four-block group.

Example of Pyramid Block Placement

Each block you build earns you 1 glory point on the score track and 1 deben for future use, and the first Governor to build all of their blocks into the pyramid also earns an immediate bonus of 2 glory points. If the pyramid is completed at the end of the fourth season, Pharaoh's sarcophagus will have its resting place for all of time and end-game scoring proceeds as usual.

However, if the game ends with an incomplete pyramid, Pharaoh's internment will be delayed and his spirit will be unable to stand before Osiris. The Governors, who obviously put their earthly agendas ahead of their Pharaoh's spiritual needs, each lose 1 glory point for every block they failed to build.

  • Temple Donations

The primary method of earning debens is to make resource donations to the temple cartouches just above the river on the board extension. The temple cartouches work like the market cartouches on the main board, except that the transaction works in only one direction. You pay in the resources noted and receive the debens notes.

The resources stay on the temple cartouche until the end of the season and that cartouche may not be reused while the resource tokens are there. At the end of the season, the resource tokens are returned to the supply.

  • Palace Guards

The guards are ready to help the Governors – for a price. Governors can hire a guard by paying two resources, mix or match, to the Barracks space near the top of the board extension; like the labor pool, the resources you pay stay in the barracks for the rest of the season. You then take a guard token and 1 deben and place them behind your screen.

On a subsequent turn in the same season, you can send the guard into a city space, even if there is already a laborer in the city. If a guard is already in a city, then no laborer or guard may be placed in the city. When you place a guard in a city, you take 1 city card for yourself.

Review for Pharaoh's Pyramid...

Glenn from Boardgames & Bourbon has been an enthusiastic evangelist for Sailing Toward Osiris from day one, so we sent him a handmade prototype of the expansion so that he could give it a spin and see what he thought.

Those pyramid blocks in Glenn's prototype are blank 16mm dice as they were the closest thing we had on hand to represent the blocks. In the production editions, the blocks will be made of wood, they'll all be a sandstone-brown, and player-color icons will be printed on the bottom of each block so you can sort the blocks by player when setting up or tearing down the game.

Risks and challenges

Daily Magic Games is committed to delivering quality products on time. We realize that the publication of a board game can be complicated and, no matter how experienced the project creators and mangers are, some problems may occur. In an effort to reduce the likelihood of delays and mistakes, we have taken several steps to prepare for success:

1. This game project, as well as the Kickstarter campaign itself, are in the hands of two well-seasoned professionals. David MacKenzie has been running Kickstarter projects since 2010 and Isaias Vallejo comes from a digital games background as production and studio director at Big Fish Games.

2. We are dedicated to backer communication and feedback. We are actively involved in the Comments section of each Kickstarter project and keep backers up to date with plenty of updates during and after the funding process. Throughout every campaign, we are as transparent about the process and as open to feedback as possible without jeopardizing production and delivery timelines.

3. We have completed significant pre-production art, graphic design, and translations on Sailing Toward Osiris: Pharaoh's Pyramid with the exception of the stretch goals. This will allow us to expedite file prep and get the files to printer in a timely fashion.

4. We have our manufacturer lined up and ready to begin the pre-press process as soon as the the files are delivered. We hope that everything goes as planned, but if something falls through the cracks, we are ready and willing to employ every tool at our disposal to get the project back on track and running smoothly.
