D-Verse NEXUS Tabletop Game (Canceled)
A miniature-based, 1 v 1 arena combat game where the arena is trying to kill you both. “A nasty game made by nasty people.”
That isn’t entirely true. It isn’t your lives that are at risk. In Nexus you and your friend will be playing the role of a Lanista. Think Don King, but instead of Mike Tyson, the two of you will be commanding genetically engineered gladiators called Helots. Just like Don, you don’t care if they live or die, win or lose, as long as it entertains the fans! Your fame and fortunes are all that truly matter.
High atop your Aeries, a kind of hovercraft that sits above the action, you both shout out commands to your hapless servants. Your Helots have the attention spans of goldfish and these space barge arenas are rife with distractions. The thunderous crowd noise coupled with the smell of rotting flesh from previous bouts do nothing to help a Helot’s concentration. Needless to say not every command gets through.
Your Helot will use these points to perform numerous actions such as movement, attacks, grappling and in some cases acrobatic feats such as standing up. You will receive bonuses for positioning relative to your opponent and could suffer disadvantages based upon your positioning relative to the environment. Be mindful of your surroundings.
Each Lanista marks off the values from one to six on their individual Turning Point Counters as they are achieved during their Action Point Rolls that begin each action round.
Once all values from one to six have been rolled a Turning Point is achieved and a respective card is drawn. These cards can be beneficial or detrimental to your Helot. Some are neither and only good for a laugh.
A barge arena equipped with floor saws is certain to elicit excitement. When a Lanista tosses an Action Point Roll and finds that he has previously rolled that value the spectators cheer and both Lanistas brace for something extraordinary. It is time for a Floor Saw to scream across the barge arena floor indiscriminately ripping flesh and limb from any Helot unfortunate enough to find itself in its path.
To determine a Floor Saw’s starting position the Lanistas use NEXUS RPO (Randomly Placed Object) rules. Each Lanista rolls a d8 and uses its value along with the numbered board grid to determine the Floor Saw’s starting location. After the Lanista triggering the Floor Saw roles a directional die the floor saw is off to do the rippin’ and the tearin’.
- Weapon Crates – Bust them open to equip a Helot with a random weapon card.
- Radioactive Waste Barrels – Eats away at a Helot’s Action Points the closer it gets.
- Braziers – Kick them over and watch the fire spread across the arena floor.
- The Creature Pit – Complete with its own AI deck.
The Barge Beast – 150 mm of pure AI deck destruction roaming the arena. You must decide if your Helot will team up or does it kill its opponent and try to take on the beast alone?
- and Many More...
- The board is made of sturdy plastic with grooves that when combined with the custom bases keep the pieces from being knocked around by table bumping do to aggressive shit talking and high fives.
- The beautifully illustrated cards are made of PVC plastic. So, no need to sleeve.
- The coins have a middle finger on them and are made of metal.
Just about the only cardboard you will receive is the box the game comes in.
The book is hard-cover faux leather bound with over 200 pages of lore, artwork and RPG rules for developing your Lanista and its troupe of Helots. Gain additional influence cards, bribe barge captains and get your Helots access to better weapons and armor as you profit from their brutal existence.
While we include the rules for the one-off game for you to download and review we do not include the PDF of the NEXUS RULEBOOK for the same reason any RPG wouldn’t. While it isn’t entirely an RPG in the traditional sense there is a great deal that has gone into this 200+ page rulebook. The book is packed with Illustrations, lore and loads of additional rules that will maximize your enjoyment of game. Below is an overview of some of the enhanced game mechanics you will find within its pages.
You will continue to play the role of the Lanista and track your progress with the included character sheets. You will keep track of your character's…
- Bitcoin (finances)
- Influence (EXP)
- Prominence (level)
- Troupe of Helots
- Win/Loss Records
As a starting Lanista you will begin with a troupe of 3 Helots. Each of your Helots will have their own character sheets. You will track your Helots’…
- Rep (EXP)
- Fame (Level)
- Injuries and Insanites
Each bout will have its own rewards for each of the participating Lanistas as well as their Helots.
- Lanistas will earn Bitcoin and Influence based on bout purses that are established before the bout begins. These purses are calculated based on the Fame of the competing Helots.
- Helots will earn Cred during the bout itself. Cred is achieved by performing various actions during the barge bout. This takes the focus from simply defeating an opponent and shifts it to putting on a show. At the end of the bout any Cred achieved from each participating helot is translated into Rep.
As a Helot rises in Fame it not only rewards its Lanista with additional Influence and Bitcoin during the bout purse phase, but it also opens access to better weapons and armor to be used in future events.
As Lanistas rise in Prominence they begin to unlock additional Influence Cards, their maximum troupe of Helots increase, Influence and Bitcoin rewards compound and increase as their Helots add your Prominence to their Fame calculations when checking requirements for their weapons and armor.
This version of the game also features…
- Bout Fees
- Helot Repair Costs
- Helot Purchase Costs
- Bout Wagering
- The Fame Action Group
- Helot Weapons and Armor
- Unique Turning Point Cards
With the first expansion already being developed including…
- The D-Mart
- Sanctioned Barges and Hazards
- Specialty Motivations
- And Much More!
We have worked hard to find a way to service everyone wanting to back the project. We realize that our game is bringing in different people from different genres and you have all been attracted by different things. Some of you have been drawn in by the artwork, some by the humor, some by the lore and many of you by the miniatures.
We are also well aware that there are many different types of miniature hobbyists out there. Some of you prefer to assemble and paint resin miniatures, because you want to see every bit of detail from the original sculpts. While others would love that , but would much prefer the savings that plastic brings and find that level of detail satisfactory.
There are also those of you that just want to play the game and are either sick of having to paint miniatures or simply have no desire to.
And then there are some who just want a copy of the rule book.
We did our best to have you all covered.
Some things to keep in mind...
- Plastic sets will be manufactured in bulk and will all be delivered at the same time.
- Plastic is lighter and less expensive to ship than the resin miniatures.
- We will fulfill resin orders on a first-come, first-served basis with resin sets having priority over a la carte resin miniatures.
- As resin figures are cast by hand and it is a labor-intensive, time-consuming process, there may be a delay in filling your order if demand is great. Please be patient!
We have made the decision to not use stretch goals as a marketing strategy in this campaign. The only way to make stretch goals work without exposing ourselves is to pull stuff out of the box, then start putting things back in as funding hits certain marks. Instead of doing this, we put everything in the box already and have planned timed-releases.
We will be posting a different miniature add-on as a timed release every 3rd day of the Kickstarter! These will be previously unseen alternate Helot Motivation miniatures and will only be available in resin. Again, a new resin miniature will be released as an add-on every 3 days regardless of funding amount!
We also have a lot of cool stuff planned for the pledge manager after the campaign. Pin-Ups, T-Shirts, Original Artwork, and even an opportunity to collaborate with us in the creation of custom Turning Point Cards along with other goodies which will all be available to backers after the campaign in the form of add-ons. We will be releasing more information about these items as the campaign progresses.

Throughout the infinite expanse of time, every intelligent race eventually realizes their universe is expanding. Upon discovering this, it becomes apparent that while there is no end to space, there is, in fact, a center of it. For those possessing the technology and an adventurous drive, reaching this “middle” of their universe becomes an ultimate goal. Once there, they find an inter-dimensional gathering of the most advanced species in the multiverse and are considered to have “arrived” as an esteemed and respected member of the D-Verse. The D-Verse, as it has come to be called, refers to the seemingly infinite dimensions that share this junction at the center of their respective universes.
At this central meeting point of all known dimensions, a brutal and no-holds-barred bloodsport known as Nexus is held. For eons, countless beings have converged to pit their greatest champions against one another aboard bloodstained barges. Nexus bouts have become the most popular form of entertainment across the furthest corners of time and space. And overseeing it all, permeated with the stench of death and decadence, are the masters of this pandimensional dynasty—the Lanistas.
Here is where we find you, a young entrepreneur looking for fame and fortune, out to make a name for himself and his species among the legendary ranks of the Nexus Lanistas. The long-storied history of Lanistas is filled with rags-to-riches tales of interdimensional nobodies and their ascent to power. Those among this Nexus elite are without equal in the prestige and influence they command. With success comes anything imaginable (universal fame, near-infinite wealth, endless political and judicial favors, etc.). Count yourself lucky—whether good luck or bad—to even be given this opportunity.
Welcome to the seedy, salacious, and oh-so-profitable underworld of Nexus!
The Interdimensional Nexus Commission (INC) is the regulating body behind Nexus. After you file the proper documentation and bribe the necessary high-ranking board members, the INC will issue your Lanista License. The INC oversees everything from barge inspections to Helot cloning standards. If you are looking to be a major Nexus player, then there is no way around dealing with the INC… except for when there is, of course. INC-sanctioned barge bouts broadcasted across blood.stream are the most viewed events in the D-Verse. It is there that your legacy will join the ranks of legend or fade into obscurity.
INC-sanctioned barge bouts take place on Nexus barges. When entering the D-Verse nexus the first thing you will see are hundreds of these barges tethered together. Some are quite ornate and massive while other seem hastily made and designed to draw as little attention as possible. Species from across the D-Verse are gathered here, placing bets, haggling with Gnoems, or looking for marks. You will see INC officers everywhere looking for, and raiding, unsanctioned matches in hopes of making arrests (but more likely collecting bribes). Nothing prepares one for this strange sight of countless beings spread across hundreds of barges that are infested with violence and bustling with activity.
So, you want to buy a Helot? Then you’re looking for the Gnoems. Gnoems were the first race to discover the D-Verse nexus. Ever since, they’ve been traveling between dimensions collecting and analyzing DNA from countless species. Their accumulated knowledge coupled with their familiarity with pandimensional lifeforms has earned them the nickname “Toy Makers,” and makes them the only source of Helots that are worthy to compete in Nexus. Gnoem expertise, while unmatched, is still limited. Some of the nuances of other lifeforms tend to escape them. Gnoems, for example, have no gender, so their attempts at breeding species could get a bit unsettling. In fact, nothing is quite as terrifying as watching two males attempt to conceive a child for fear of torture by the Gnoems’ devices. Due to this, the INC established guidelines instructing Gnoems to sell genetic clones of only the samples they have collected and discouraging them against further abduction of lifeforms from their home worlds.
The official term for a Nexus fighter is a Helot, although they are more commonly known among Gnoems as “Mamluk” (the Gnoem word for “meat”). Helots are grown by Gnoems in what are known as the Meat Gardens. For a reasonable fee, aspiring Lanistas can purchase their future champion from the Meat Garden’s weekly harvest. Gnoem Helots are in large demand; unless you’re paying premium prices, you just get the next one off the line. No refunds. If you don’t like the result, kill it and buy another. If you’re squeamish however, the Gnoems will gladly destroy your unwanted Helot for you (but they keep the leftover organic matter).
Gnoems have already handled everything concerning your new purchase. Helots come out of the Gardens ready to fight. From an early age, they are given a series of tests to determine their motivation to survive. These tests involve analysis as subjects are exposed to extreme mental and physical stimulus. Gnoems will always find a way to motivate a Helot. Upon purchasing your Helot, you will receive his Biometric Species Analysis. This sheet will give you a comprehensive explanation of not only your Helot’s strengths and weaknesses, but also how to care for your Helot. Be sure to keep the sheet and the information on it updated, as it will be handy if you are given the opportunity to sell any organic matter after the Helot expires. This, however, is very unlikely; the Spleen Team is very thorough.
The official cleaning service of the INC. After any officially INC-sanctioned barge bout, there is a wealth of equipment and biological matter left behind. The Spleen Team is there to steal… err… “clean up” the mess. Any disregarded Helot and their belongings are collected by the Spleen Team and redistributed by the INC’s charitable Weapons for Tots program—furthering their mission of putting a weapon in every child’s hand. As far as leftover biological matter, Gnoems are always interested in collecting whatever the Spleen Team doesn’t eat.
If Helots engage in a barge bout and nobody is betting on it, did it ever really happen? Gambling on Nexus outcomes is far and away the number one moneymaker in the D-Verse, making “The Book” the nexus of Nexus. The Book is the official odds-maker and bookie of Nexus. Not much is known about what goes on behind the scenes of The Book. That said, The Book is the only organization that the INC fears. While the INC has spoken in the past about the Nexus’ “integrity” and how the Nexus must steer clear of gambling connections to eliminate any nefarious actions (fixing bouts, etc.), its actions suggest otherwise.
While nobody (at least, nobody alive) can draw a direct line between the INC and The Book, many rumors suggest the two organizations are, in fact, one and the same. One extremely vocal propagator of such information is the interdimensional hacker and pirate broadcaster known as Crypt. Crypt has been a thorn in the side of both The Book and INC for the last millennia. Recently, many of Crypt’s sources have found themselves conducting interviews in Gnoem torture devices, but Crypt has thus far eluded capture.
Whoever said, “It’s not the weapon; it’s the Helot behind it!” was an idiot. They have obviously never seen what a Krillion Forearm Blade can do to an opponent’s flesh. The right weapons and armor can make or break a Helot in the barge arena. While weapons aren’t cheap, they are necessary. An investment in your Helot’s equipment is an investment in your Helot’s future. The Nexus Dimensional Market, better known as D-Mart, is your one-stop-shop for the greatest weapons and armors in the D-Verse.
Manufacturers from across the D-Verse compete here for profit and exposure. They sell everything from tried-and-true classics to cutting edge, next-gen, and highly experimental weapon systems. Their armors—commonly known as “Meat Packaging”—are detested among Gnoems, having been blamed for the first decrease in Helot sales in four centuries.
Be warned! These vendors won’t just sell to anyone. A Helot getting destroyed in a particular vendor’s equipment is never good for that vendor’s sales. The more established vendors require the Helot and their Lanista to have a bit of notoriety and experience before they will consider selling their wares. For these same reasons, vendors may also require a Helot to have a specific skill set.
There are a dizzying number of barges in the nexus, with new ones being flown in every day. It is every Lanista’s dream to one day have their own officially INC-sanctioned barge. The amount of money and resources involved is steep, and that’s not accounting for the equally pricey under-the-table costs. This hindrance to free market violence means there are many unsanctioned barges to be found in the nexus. This is most likely where you will begin your career as a Lanista. Not by owning an unsanctioned barge, mind you, but by having your Helots compete on these floating piles of… well, sub-quality vessels.
This does, however, have its advantages. First off, you make far more bitcoin when avoiding the INC’s bout fees. You usually must hire your own cleaning crew—that’s good news because that means no Spleen Team involvement! You can collect all your dead Helot’s equipment and biomatter. And think of all the interesting people you’ll meet!
Now for the downsides.
First, unsanctioned bouts don’t bring anywhere near the exposure of an officially INC-sanctioned barge. While you might grow in popularity among the “hardcore” fans, nobody important will know you or your Helots exist—except the INC, which disapproves of not getting their cut.
This brings us to the second problem: Raids.
INC officers take their duties very seriously. They’re quite vigilant in their search for rogue barges to shakedown for bribes. Whenever your Helots engage in an unsanctioned barge bout, there’s a chance of a raid. If this happens, you’ll find the INC cut to be quite generous in comparison. It’s a small comfort knowing that you’ll have no choice in the beginning of your Lanista career. Your crap Helots will most likely die on crap barges after raids bleed you dry and you’ll fade into obscurity like billions before.
NEXUS is the result of 2 guys, who grew up together in Detroit, working on their passion while also holding down full time jobs, raising 6 kids between them, attending soccer games, baseball, and a myriad of other activities. Imagine what other things we could create if this was our full-time job. When you back Nexus, yes you are buying a game, but you are also funding a company who will bring you innovative, smart, and nostalgic projects like this for years to come.
Our purpose is greater than ourselves. We want to elevate the real rock stars in our eyes – those are the artists, the writers, the guys that stay up all night developing unique game mechanics, and many more of the talented people who have a passion for the tabletop gaming industry but just haven’t had the chance to make a living from it yet.
We believe this expressly fits the spirit of Kickstarter and is why we have chosen it for our funding platform. There have been many people that have helped us along the way to where we are. We are very thankful for each and every one of them and it is our hope that with the success of the NEXUS Kickstarter will also come the success of many talented individuals who will get to do the things they love as a means to earn a living.

It is impossible to know the exact shipping charges that will be assessed to your order. Below is the most accurate estimates for the resin version of the complete game. These estimates are based on information attained by our manufacturers and fulfillment companies and use current world shipping rates.
Depending on the unit volume of our Kickstarter we hope to deliver with shipping costs below these estimates, but nothing is guaranteed.
Risks and challenges
First off thank you for considering sponsoring and pledging to our campaign. This is our first Kickstarter and we have done a lot of research. Having backgrounds in project management, we know that research can only get you so far, it is real experience that delivers the best outcomes. Knowing this, we have brought on board Kickstarter veterans that have been mentoring us and providing sound advice through the process and will continue to do so after the campaign. Very few campaigns are immune to issues such as shipping delays and customs and we are doing the best we can to get the very best in the industry to help fulfill those needs and ensure delivery as smooth as possible.
NEXUS is close to completion. The rest of the touch-ups will take place during and after the Kickstarter taking into consideration backer suggestions and feedback. These shouldn’t cause any problems and after everything is fully complete and polished, production will begin as we continue to keep a keen eye on quality, since that is very important to us. You can expect regular and informative updates after we have funded, monthly at a minimum. Thanks again for your time and consideration. We are really excited to bring Nexus to you and hope for you to enjoy it for years to come.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
