Current Alpha Target Date: October 8th

Hi HEXers. William here with your weekly update and the headline is that Alpha is currently planned for release on October 8th. Here's Cory Jones below with more information on that.

So the big question… When is Alpha? It's October 8th … maybe

Features in the Alpha
- Make an account
- Full play set (4) of PVP cards
- Full deck building interface
- Make and Save decks
- Play single matches with other Alpha gamers
- Chat!
- First look at the Entrath interactive globe
- Enjoy the (still in progress but greatly improved) interface elements!
- The game going up and down as we patch and fix all the problems we discover as part of the Alpha
- BUGS! This is Alpha; it will be riddled with bugs! That’s just the way an Alpha is, its part of the alpha process!
- Seriously... BUGS!!!

We are very close and continue to finish elements that will allow us to hit our internal Alpha milestone schedule of Sept.30. There are a few elements that remain untested (primarily server issues); those issues will be our major hurdle, and I will have a clearer picture as we get closer to that date.

I have often described video game development like so: “Imagine you’re on a road, and off in the distance you can see a castle. Given the distance, you can make a pretty accurate judgment on how long it will take to walk to that castle. But, the problem is the road between you and the castle is shrouded in mist. Sure, if the mist isn’t hiding anything, your estimate should be pretty accurate… but, if you happen to run into a crevasse or some bandits hiding in the mist… well, its going to take a bit longer to get to that castle”

We are very close and can be pretty accurate on this date (not a lot of mist left), but sadly we are not sandbagging. Real work is still going into the alpha, so until we have the last bit of development done I cannot guarantee the date, and this is compounded by some of these last elements having zero test time. This has really been a war between our desires to get you the Alpha by the end of Sept. and judging what was “finished” enough to really feel like a good Alpha experience. We are actively playing the game, and every day the look and feel gets better. Trust me, no one is more excited to get this in the hands of you the backers than me, and I think you’re going to flip for what we have done.

As to the roll out, clearly we cannot simple dump the entire base into an untested server platform; players will have to trickle in. My hope is we do relatively small batches the first couple of days and based on that info we throttle it as high as we can reasonably go to get everyone in as quickly as possible. As an example: if we let in 500 people day one, 1000 day two, and the server is handling it no problem, we could go 5000 day three and the rest day four, but this is all based on server performance.

Thank you so much for your belief in HEX, and leading up to October 8th. I will hit the forums and let you know if anything goes wrong and the date will not hold.

So, we're truckin along and we'll let you know if that date moves, but we're currently targeting October 8th.

What We're Doing

As for the rest of the team, we're still doing things like putting new location panoramas into the client, finishing up the PVE art (both creating and upgrading pieces), and booking Set 2 pieces. We have a few pieces that came in this week, and we're really trying to both improve the art from an artistic quality standpoint and a composition standpoint. That means cleaning up the internal artist database and project management website.

R&D is both working on Set 2 development (a lot of late night pizza party booster drafts here at the office) and the PVE dungeon experience. The engineers are working their magic-- or at least it seems like magic to a layperson such as myself. Kyle is cracking the whip to make sure we get to the targeted date. He's a kind whip cracker, though-- as kind as you can find in the whip cracking business-- so don't feel bad for us.

Card Previews

Today, we're featuring two humans: the sapphire Phoenix Guard Trainer and the ruby Daring Swordsman. The former fits perfectly into Human Inspire decks, and the latter gets dangerous-- even lethal-- quickly.

Alpha Desktops

We've updated the desktop area with the Alpha design featuring some new art, so download those and refresh your device backgrounds today!

Coming Up

Next week, you can expect some information on the alpha sign-up process as we're able to finalize that, some more card previews, an art showcase, and more! Until then, see you next week and feel free to discuss this here in the comments as well on our forums.

The biggest issue with this update is the art of Chris Woods, his hair was entirely not foofy enough.

nice wall of text, Thu not a bad read.

i did not try to hard too validate my point because i was trying avoid fanning the flames. an i stated an stand by we gain nothing by them been apologetic.

i also agreed with Reser, an stated so each time. even your post is well made how ever the best use of are time is not too look for who right/wrong an move on, an enjoy the game when it comes.

their even a chance it won't come out on the 8th, i would prefer we not focus so strongly on dates as it adds disappointment an hate, when were not validated with are desire. least my opinion.

Crypto can post anytime if they want clarify things but think their trying avoid validating either side.

How about we give Reser the benefit of the doubt? I don't know him / her but surely more than one of the 17,765+ backers feel the same way?

Reser does bring up some valid points, for instance this is the first time anyone has heard of an "internal Alpha milestone" until now. I believe the whole point of Reser's post was to point out that for the last several weeks / month everything seemed to all be going "according to plan."

Joker: I just did what I do best. I took your little plan and I turned it on itself. Look what I did to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. Hmmm? You know... You know what I've noticed? Nobody panics when things go "according to plan." Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan." But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!
(Joker hands Two-Face a gun and points it at his forehead.)
Joker: Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I'm an agent of chaos. Oh, and you know the thing about chaos? It's fair!

If you refer back to UPDATE #42 the first two sentences is "Hi HEXers. If you watched the Twitch stream last week, you heard that Cory confirmed alpha at the end of September. So, you'll have the alpha version of HEX in your hands in just a few weeks." That was five weeks ago. I didn't go back further to see when the September date was first mentioned.

@Crypto: People are okay with the date because it's all they can be... if you told a four year old that Santa was going to be eight days late this year what do you think would happen? They would be upset, balling their eyes out, but someone would reassure them that Santa would be there in eight days so they would ultimately accept it because they have no other recourse... BUT those will be the longest eight days in that child's life.

And no, I'm not calling Reser a four year old, it's just an example. Everyone here wants to play this game, no one is "excited" about having to wait an additional eight days to do it.

@Ruinaes: GTA5 will surely eat up a good portion of my time until the 8th too...

@Casey Hughes, Jeffery Madson, AustinRM: Remember, the original Kickstarter "Estimated delivery: Sep 2013" was for Beta access so Jeffery you're right, without Alpha it would be a killer :)

@Kevin Bates: I believe that this is the heart of what Reser was trying to say. Disappointed in the slip and disheartening that it's being disguised as "good news" because they're hitting their internal Alpha date.

@Mike: Since you copied the estimated date from the Kickstarter I'm assuming that's the delivery date your referencing, and I think you've got your wires crossed. The ORIGINAL "Estimated delivery: Sep 2013" was for BETA access, not ALPHA. Alpha was unlocked as a stretch goal and if I remember correctly was targeting the beginning of Summer. It got pushed to the end of September at some point and everyone seemed okay with it because we were still going to be playing something during the original promised time frame.

Dates slip in software development, especially when you're dealing with all of the stretch goals that were unlocked, and I believe that as a community Kickstarter is okay with slippage in general as long as it's upfront and honest. Reser is okay with the delay but not the delivery and I kinda agree.

      @Matther Murphy: Exactly.

@mistborn: Reser isn't acting like a child, maybe the delivery wasn't great but the message was at least honest. Honestly, after the original post it seems more like defending their statement then complaining.

@Theronious Monk U55 End of the Line: Maybe you should take some of your own advice and look at the message instead of the words that Reser used? At this point in the thread it seems like the posters are more interested in Reser bashing that commenting on Crypto or Hex.

Some of the things I mentioned earlier apply to your post as well.

On a side note YOU have no idea at what level Reser backed... so while at Squire level it's "only" a $20 pledge at Producer it's $10k. Does the Producer have more rights than the Squire? They both put their hard earned money in to back this project and ultimately I think have just as must right to express their opinion on how things are going.

@jeremy bardwell: Again, this was the first mention of an internal Alpha milestone.

@deadfool: And I quote from Update #42 "Hi HEXers. If you watched the Twitch stream last week, you heard that Cory confirmed alpha at the end of September. So, you'll have the alpha version of HEX in your hands in just a few weeks."

@TheOnyxRaven: Agreed, eight days isn't the end of the world.

So what is the point of this wall-o-text? Was I trying to come and "rescue" Reser? Not really, I don't really think that Reser needed rescuing. I guess I was trying to put some perspective on his / her posts - I REALLY wish I knew if Reser was male or female at this point because I'm tired of typing it.

I think Crypto is going a great job and that we're going to end up with a great product in the end. One thing that we can all agree on is that EVERYONE here wants to play this game and they are passionate about doing so, otherwise they wouldn't be here. So maybe when someone says something "bad" about an update you can look at it from their perspective instead of yours...

TL;DR: The Joker is an agent of chaos and Santa's still coming...

    4. Chris Hawkins on September 22, 2013

Has there been any talk about how the Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc groups are going to be selected? Going by tier level doesn't seem to add up with the numbers listed above, so I'm just curious how they are plaining on handling that.

I'm sad to see alpha slip into Oct. but that's how it goes. No big deal. Will alpha have any single player elements to it so we can play against the AI?

    10. Lucas Maliniak on September 20, 2013

I believe that an honest approach is the best approach too (like Reser was trying to point out), however I must emphasize that it was an "estimate" to get the alpha out in September. Yes, Cory could explicitly say that they are delayed in meeting their "estimated" delivery of the alpha, but obviously if the date is pushed back to the 8th, we know that they are behind (and he did explain why). However, look at CLANG or the other recent kickstarter projects have recently come out to their backers saying that they have run out of funds and cannot produce the game that they had originally promised... When you put it into perspective, people here are complaining about how the alpha is pushed back by eight-ish days when people who backed other games won't even get to see the end result...

TL;DR/Rant aside: I know we're all eager to get into this awesome game, but good things come to those who are patient. Eight days isn't a big deal for a game that could provide us YEARS of entertainment.

@Reser You said you wanted to hear the "cold hard facts" from Crypto, but have you ever read a newspaper or watched the news in the past decade? It's hard to get the "cold hard facts" anywhere now a days :P

@Reser I remember the thing Cory actually said at dragon con (I think it was), was shooting for alpha by the end of september "give or take a week." I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt with the 8th and say that isn't really a delay. And now if it is later than that we can call it a delay, which is definitely something to not be shocked about with the way development works.

    12. David Hart on September 20, 2013

My only disappointment is the lack of a PvE taster, but I realise that testing the main game engine is a priority which is more readily accomplished with PvP. And yes, I'm excited about the alpha... :-)

Thanks for letting us know the potential alpha date!

      To those that can't read:
"We are very close and continue to finish elements that will allow us to hit our internal Alpha milestone schedule of Sept.30."

notice it says "internal Alpha milestone schedule of sept 30". Also estimated delivery: sept.. so they try to make it 8 days past an estimate. But that's ok, it was an estimate not fact.

    16. Theronious Monk on September 20, 2013

I second the irritation towards Reser and anyone else bemoaning a very small delay. Crypto has been very in touch with backers here, engaging every possible question with tremendous grace and transparency. But in the end, I guess it's way more entertaining to be an entitled twat on the internet that likely has never had to develop software or games.

    17. Missing avatar

      mistborn on September 20, 2013

Reser quit acting like a spoiled child. They missed by a week or so. That is almost trivial when planning/discussing something as complex as game development, which you obviously have zero experience doing. The most important thing is getting the game done right and delivering a solid production, not worrying about your feelings while you play word lawyer.

what!? Bugs in my ALpha? Clearly you are doing something very wrong. There is no way around it, you need to hire me so I can tell you that are doing everything wrong somehow. But dont worry I am expensive, so you'll feel good about it.

Besides that? Take your time, delays are sadly the norm in this business and frankly a few weeks isnt alot so no grief from me. I am sure you'll make an outstanding game.

    19. Matthew Murphy on September 20, 2013

I second the irritation that they are acting like all is going as planned. Acknowledge that you are behind schedule and I wouldn't be so annoyed. I did give you my money after all.

    20. Keldrin

Awesome! Glad to have a firmish date to look at.
Also, glad no one hurt their ankle in that crevasse, and that those bandits didn't make off with your game!
Thank you for the update. And I'm so glad you emphasized there being bugs. It does 2 things
      1) helps lower expectations of this being essentially a finished product
      2) tells me you are doing your best to give us access as soon as reasonably possible, and maybe even a bit sooner than that.

    21. jimmywolf on September 20, 2013

they do it by tiers, first day would be half of grand king an up, depending how much the wanted too limit it. an each day or next wave, would be more players based on tier/severer issues till all got in

i still agree with you but they never said hey 9/XX/13 hex will be playable in your hands! they said

      Estimated delivery: Sep 2013

an wanted alpha out by the end of September. even then they never said it would happen, if they did apologizes, to me it would be they were not trying hard enough.

by saying their still on track an pushing for October 8th it means their trying hard too give us a game too test/play least my opinion.

    22. Alzorath on September 20, 2013

I'm also exceptionally interested in just how these accesses will be rolled out, considering I have reached a point where I'm asked almost daily when I'll be covering the Hex Alpha on my channel (it's actually reached the point where it's passed Hearthstone in frequency of that question...) - this is mainly so I can give a better estimate to my viewers.

    23. Reser on September 20, 2013

@Crytpo Once again I do not care about it being delayed, I care about the fact Cory seems to think it is not delayed and acting like you are going to hit your deadline.

It does not give me a good impression of you when you sit here and act like you are hitting the deadlines you set when you clearly are not.

All I wanted was Cory to say, "yes its delayed but here is why", people saying we appreciate the honesty, yet I see no honesty at all in his post. He never even says the word delay once and skirts around it as much as he can.

I do not like it when companys skirt around delays and act vague, Just gives us the cold hard facts for once, please.

You also must have known this was going to be delayed or likley to be delayed last week yet built everyone up for this update, why? That was not a very good idea at all.

    34. Casey Hughes on September 20, 2013

Got to love the internet where "estimated" release dates get taken as hard release dates and gods forbid if you miss it by just a little bit.

    35. Ruinaes on September 20, 2013

For real? I don't think anyone needs to come up with an elaborate excuse for an 8-day extension. It's only 8 days. Go outside, enjoy the sunshine, watch some tv. It will be here soon enough.

    36. jimmywolf on September 20, 2013

while i agree with your sentiment, i enjoy their honesty more. this was never too play a release day game, it was for "early" access too play an test.

they could give it too us now but it be very broken, server lag, been taken down regular for patches every few hours an miserable for everyone.

Kevin - But soon! So very soon! =)

Reser - As Cory outlined, software development is sometimes unpredictable in its nature. While not perfect, I think this date is a very good one and the majority of people seem to be very accepting of this, excited about it.

Tyler - Thank you. We as a team really wanted the entire set to be available to our backers-- our biggest and earliest supporters-- and I think it's awesome that we were able to focus our efforts make that happen.

Bekkir - Thanks! We're excited to get this in your hands as soon as we can!

Eric - I'm planning to give a handful of exclusive previews to fan-run HEX websites and introduce them to the process of previewing new sets to their community, so no full spoiler yet.

      Andy - Thank you!

Some of you guys need to relax. Impatience is much more annoying.
HEX is going to be freaking fun, why isn't that alone good enough?

    40. Reser on September 20, 2013

I understand that there are reasons for it to be pushed back. what i don't like is how they not once even called it a delay or similar in the post, and then claim they are on target to hit the milestone of end of September, when they obviously are not.

They originally said Beta September, then alpha September, then Alpha end of September, now alpha October. that is obviously not hitting the date at all.

They never once said End of September was an "internal Alpha" milestone till now, they have said all along end of September was a milestone for "us" to be able to play. Now they are saying that was the date they were aiming for , for "internal" Alpha, and are on target to hit it..

Just admit its been delayed and explain why, not cover it up and make excuses. Just annoying.

    41. Andy Cormack on September 20, 2013

Knew it would be delayed from your original estimate but not bad that you managed to get it so close, congrats :) I'm so excited to dive in and get playing, the anticipation is killing me :D

Awesome to hear things are coming along, it clearly takes a lot of time and effort to get this going. Hopefully people don't complain too much about the date being in October. I'm also impressed we'll be getting full card playsets in the alpha - I was just expecting starter decks. Guess that's a good way to get us testing out card interactions, though!

    45. Reser on September 20, 2013

      Ok what? Internal Alpha milestone?

Did you not say for the past like month that "we" the players would be able to play Alpha by the end of September? Now you say saying 8th October and that you are on target to hit your milestone? no..

How about just say it is delayed and not try to cover up for the fact by saying the end of September was an "internal Alpha" milestone?
