HEX is coming to tablets!

Hi HEXers. You did it! With PayPal at $92,225, we got there. Overnight, you pushed us over the 1.5 million mark and HEX is coming to tablets. Congratulations! Give yourselves a hand.

I was looking for some lens flares to add to our celebration GIF/JIF (hey man, I don't judge), but it seems JJ used up the entire supply of them on the last Star Trek film. Heyoooooooooooooooooo.

The Home Stretch

We have about a week to go for this campaign, and we're going to introduce the final stretch goals. In Cory's first update here on Kickstarter, he mentioned that we will always be adding features, gameplay to HEX. We're in this for the long haul, just like the other TCGs the members of the HEX team have worked on. At this point, now that we're able to source a veteran mobile team to bring HEX to tablets, we are committed to getting HEX into your hands as soon as possible. That's why we're not promising any additional game functionality with these next stretch goals. We have some incredible things we'd like to do with HEX once it's up and running, but at this point we are focusing on delivering the game to you.

That said, we want to keep rewarding you for getting people involved in HEX and we want you to share in this Kickstarter's success. This is, after all, your game as much as it is ours. You believed in HEX and now we're crossing that 1.5 million milestone together. So, here's your next goal!

The Booty

At 1.8 million dollars, we're going to hire a famous fantasy writer to create the first HEX novel! That writer has agreed to jump on the project and once the T's are crossed, I's are dotted, we'll be able to announce his or her name. So, soon!

The reward for unlocking the novel is that we'll be able to give Kickstarter backers early access to alpha, character name reservation, and guild creation. You'll be able to register your account name, create your guilds, and play an early alpha version of HEX before anybody else. Now, the 1 year of weekly drafts for those backers won't start at this point, nor your other rewards. This is free early access to the alpha to get a look at the game you've helped build.

Legendary Gear IRL

We've finally finished our t-shirts and put them up on the Cryptozoic store. Here's your first look at the three shirt designs.

HEX: Shards of Fate Shirt

Ardent Shirt

Underworld Shirt

I'm partial to the Underworld shirt, and you can order your favorite shirt today. We'll be taking orders through June and expect to ship sometime in August. Right now, the Cryptozoic store is set up only for orders in North America. We're working on a solution to you fans abroad and hope to have an answer within a week.

Project Eternity hai2u

Welcome, Project Eternity backers. We're huge fans of Obsidian Entertainment here in the office-- heck, we love them so much we moved less than a mile away from their HQ-- and we're happy to have you along. Thank you to Obsidian for mentioning us in their latest Kickstarter update, and if you RPG fanatics didn't back them during their 4 million dollar (!!!) Project Eternity campaign, you'll want to be a Slacker Backer here. You'll absolutely see us in game, so sign up!

HEX on the Web

Gamasutra blogger Zoran dropped by the Cryptozoic studio last week and we gave him an early look at HEX. After some battles, he interviewed the HEX team that you can read here.

One of the wisest, most sophisticated people of the TCG scene (and good friend of mine, in case you couldn't tell), Adrian Sullivan visited Cryptozoic to take a look at HEX and give us his thoughts. You can check out his piece and card spoilers here.

One of our interns, Cory Burkhart, writes about his experiences here at Cryptozoic and all  his playtest battles. You can read that here.

Twitch TV - Monday, June 3rd at 5 PM PST

Hey folks! Don't forget that we'll have our next Twitch feed featuring 4 new decks on Monday, June 3rd at 5 PM PST. Mark it on your calendars. If you have a physical calendar these days, I mean. Probably unlikely. Maybe make it a reminder on your phone? Yeah, do that. Anyway, be there! And if you missed it, you can watch the previous stream on our Twitch page at any time. Just click the Videos tab in the upper-right-hand corner.

So, let's start this final run right! Let people know that HEX is coming to tablets. $7 booster drafts, adventure, exploration, treasure... it's all going to be here before you know it. And tell them to Like us on Facebook, Follow us on Twitter, Subscribe on Youtube, Subscribe on Twitch, and register on our forums

I don't think amazon takes a loss, they simply have an efficient distribution network and massive sales volumes that can profit off smaller margins and get lower shipping rates.

      Please have overseas shipping

Chris Hawkins, alpha will just be you get to mess around with cards and play whatever is ready to play. You won't get to keep anything but you get to create your guild and character names which will carry over. The beta release in Sept will be when you get your pledge boosters and everything else.

    3. Chris Hawkins on June 1, 2013

@Brett Cooper - Thanks for straightening me out on that one. I hadn't even considered that Alpha precedes Beta (as obvious as it should be). I completely misunderstood and thought Alpha was the term for the main stream release. Hopefully there will be no wipe after we receive rewards.

    4. Greek Winter Media on May 31, 2013

People are too conditioned to believe shipping is free by companies taking a loss on shipping like Amazon. Anyone that's done actual shipping for a real company knows that between packing materials, time to package and ship, 10 dollars is not an unreasonable estimate.

@Christopher Hawkins - Generally Alphas occur before Betas in the software development world. They're a lot less stable and set in stone and such. They mentioned that the rewards only kick in once Beta starts (and I think I recall reading no reset after Beta but don't remember for sure).

Anyway, it makes sense to not put the rewards in for Alpha, as well as a reset afterwards. If you consider the buggy nature of an Alpha, I can imagine them not wanting to risk issues with the bugs in Alpha leading to a permanent bad event with a player.

(Like, for example, some weird bug in Alpha makes opening a pack, or a trade, or something, go haywire and the account loses something. By the time the Beta comes around most of these sort of things are gone so there is a lot less risk to the consumer.)

    15. Chris Hawkins on May 30, 2013

@Cryptozoic - I would like to know more about this Beta>Alpha transfer/wipe. Can you talk a little bit about how you guys are going to handle that transition? Are the cards we acquire in Beta going to make it on the bus when we pack up and head over to Alpha world? How are the various rewards going to be handled and factored in to this transition period?

@Martin N., Purple Llama of the O.O. and @Radek Vytiska actually it depends on what there coding it in the newest Visual studio would make the port between windows and RT very easy but since this is also going to be MacOS most likely its not being coded that way.

    17. Gabriel Giroux on May 30, 2013

Hey guys, Amazed by the product as described now. Any chances to see "leagues" format on the game? Veteran MTGO players knows what I'm talking about. It wars one of my favs for sure!

    18. Dustin Carpenter on May 30, 2013

Alpha access? I want, I want! I've been trying like crazy to find something to scratch the itch this game has created, and what better way than by playing the actual game itself?

I know projects like these are somewhat unpredictable, and all dates are subject to change, as unforeseen problems arise, but is there by chance a planned alpha date that you all would be comfortable making public? I fully understand if there's not, but doesn't hurt to ask :)

Great news about the novel too. TCGs are so much more enjoyable to play, for me at least, if the cards I am playing are a part of a greater story. It makes the battles feel so much more alive and meaningful that way.

Just a thought that would be nice (and even more incentive for people to increase their pledges) what would you say to a tiered name reservation system? That is, the Producer backers get a day or two to reserve their names, then Immortals are added to the pool for a day or two, then Primals, then Dragon Lords, then Grand Kings, and so on and so forth? Give the higher level pledges a better chance of getting the name they want (and before people talk about how they pledged for the same tier multiple times and should be higher on the priority list, well, they're already getting a ton in trade for that money).

Any chance it can come to Win8 tablets?

    22. Cryptozoic Entertainment 5-time creator on May 30, 2013

@Tim: Alpha will be free of charge and we're not starting your rewards at that time, so there will be a wipe.

@Kris: We don't have a date on that yet as we need to get that team up and running, but when we have a date we'll share it with everyone.

@Travis: Sure. I'll add them at the end of the campaign.

    23. Kris Powell on May 30, 2013

When is the target date for tablet support?

    24. Timothy C. Cooke on May 30, 2013

You guys had said before that you're plan was not to reset or take anything away from players going from beta to release, will this be the case with the alpha as well?

    35. Michael Sanderson on May 30, 2013

@Shiroco Ya, I completely agree. Also with out the more in demand tiers opening up I am wondering if we will even hit that, even though projections are predicting we will right be for it closes. I was actually more underwhelmed with the stretch reward than the last one.

    36. Shiroco-Librarian of Unwritten Tales 542 on May 30, 2013

I have to say that I kinda dislike that. If we give them the money to make a novel we have to then buy it? Would be the same as if we just donated our money instead of getting some rewards. It's okay if we have to buy the paperback version but an e-book version should be added to the tiers. Don't get me wrong I'm one of those guys who would buy a paperback version of the book but it just kinda feels *meh*.

    37. Missing avatar

Dan Woods on May 30, 2013

@Shiroco, it sounds to me like the stretch goal will just unlock the creation of a novel, not guaranteeing a copy to backers. It will exist if they hit $1.8 million, but it will be up to you to buy the book.

    38. Tayo Sanders II on May 30, 2013

Congrats! :) And those shirts look fantastic. Time to spread the word like a effervescent maniac so we can reach Alpha access!

Will the android segment of tablet support include Kindles? I know there's a few extra hurdles to get on there compared to other android devices.

Something like that!! We rly need more tiers to reach the 2.5mil and last Strech goal!!!
Do it Do it Do it!!!

    42. Shiroco-Librarian of Unwritten Tales 542 on May 30, 2013

If we reach the goal, will the novel be added to every tier? Or will we be able to add it to our tier (digital or physical copy)?

    43. Michael Sanderson on May 30, 2013

Congrats on teh 1.5 mil! Thats quite the achievement! Thats about all I like for the update.

    44. Aaron Gunderson on May 30, 2013

Congrats on 1.5mil and good luck on the way to 1.8. If you really want to thank those of us that came over from PE, would you consider opening more GK slots since by the time obsidian's update went out, they were already gone. :D

    45. Cryptozoic Entertainment 5-time creator on May 30, 2013

@Dustin - The 720K tier did promise more particle effects, so it seemed appropriate.

@Radek - That's certainly on our radar. It's just too early to talk about it.

@Caleb - We would've liked to, but unfortunately adding a physical item like that can be complicated for the user and is definitely tough on our end for fulfillment if we tie it to Kickstarter.

    46. Martin Nicolas on May 30, 2013

Great to hear about a playable alpha to get the paws on! ;)
