New Cult unlocked … get ready for Hastur!
We have an extra special Kickstarter-exclusive game upgrade for you today: a new Cult! This one worships Hastur, bringer of madness and doom … also known as the King in Yellow. Every Kickstarter backer will receive an additional Cult Sheet that opens up even more gameplay possibilities. Now, you have one more God you can devote your soul to as you try to win a game of CULT: CHOOSE YOUR GOD WISELY.
We know you’re probably curious about how this latest Cult plays, so our newest strategy guide focuses on the Cult of Hastur!
The Cult of the Yellow King has a Divine Might of only 12, spending most of the game on the light side of its Cult sheet. Its abilities call for a very unorthodox playstyle, which creates an enticing challenge for experienced players. Hastur’s Cult must avoid direct confrontation, reactively putting Priests with strength 1 in uncontested Locations by using the “Echoes of the Void” ability. However, there are only three 1-strength Priests, so to make the most from this restrictive toolkit, Hastur’s Cult must upgrade them and then pursue the strategy of building five Altars to achieve victory.
When playing against the Cults of Anubis or Janus, players will usually try to limit their growth. Opponents of Hastur’s Cult will usually try to follow these same tactics. The difference is that this Cult can remove both its own and opposing Priests from Locations. Hastur’s Cult can build an Altar faster than Cthulhu’s, but it is also easier for other players to hinder this strategy.
This Cult’s dark side aids in the goal of building five Altars. However, you can also catch your opponents off guard with the “Choir of Hollowness” ability, which allows you to win the game with just 16 Influence at the Rift of Darkness. If opponents manage to stop you, you can use “Realm of Madness” to recover. If you manage to get a few key License card during the early part of the game, you can successfully play even if you lose all of your coins and Followers each round.
Despite the tricky playstyle, Hastur’s Cult can be effectively used against any number of opponents.
