About

Supernatural: 10 Yrs of Smiles

A documentary film that attempts to take an in depth look into the history of fandom culture through the lens of the television show Supernatural and the millions of fans around the globe that devote their time as well as effort into discussing, watching, and creating things centered around the show! These fans form lifetime bonds, and travel miles to meet each other as well as the actors and creators at various fan conventions around the world. We plan to document this inner workings of this specific fandom, their charity work, the show, its interaction with the fandom, and the business of the fan conventions they often all meet at!

By making all the footage and audio we record for this documentary project available to the fandom after the premiere we aim to encourage the fans to remix and create their own projects from the building blocks of this project.

*Please check out Update #4 to see the kinds of stories we are getting in since launching this campaign! We would love to tell as many stories like Chantelle's as possible! Also scroll down to see more of our confirmed interviews! We are getting more confirmations every day and have interviews with some of the cast and behind the scenes convention runners lined up as well.

*We are finally live! After getting accepted by Kickstarter months ago we still had to do some ground work and make sure we could go live and complete this project if funded! We initially were set to shoot at the conventions put on on by Creation Entertainment based on our initial contact and discussions with them prior to us launching, but weeks into going live with the project (6-9-2014) we found out that there has already been a crew working on a similar type of project and they have been filming at the Creation Entertainment conventions for the past 2 years now. The folks over at Creation Entertainment have been very helpful in our start so we don't want to step on anyone's toes and will be shifting our focus to other fan conventions that the fans, actors, creators, attend instead! Just a little hiccup but that's how things go sometimes, everyone doesn't always know everything that's happening at once!

Also the nice folks over at Warner Brothers Supernatural legal department have been informed and sent this project for review and Mrs. Diana informed us via phone that she doubts there will be any issues with us launching, and after following up with her boss she sent us a nice email wishing us luck and reminding us to stay in "fair use" territory! Though the WB and its employees don't endorse or support this project officially in anyway it still only exists because of their stance/support of the Supernatural fan community over the years! Let us all take a second to say "Thanks Diana!" and "Thanks WB!" and get started!

*Also special shout out to Karen Cooke for allowing us to use her convention photos in the trailer. Check out her work at http://www.karencookephotography.com/

Do u really have to ask that?
Do u really have to ask that?

Not many television shows last for 10 seasons, it takes a large amount of love and dedication by those involved in creating the show as well as those fans that respond to a show in order to accomplish such a feat. Supernatural is one of those shows. There are legions of showrunners that strive to get just 1 season, Supernatural is entering its 10th with no signs of slowing down!

One thing Supernatural has done well over the years is endear itself to the hearts of fans across the world by actively acknowledging and supporting the rabid fan community that surrounds it. No matter if its a quick moment of fan service in a blooper reel, an entire episode, or specific characters and events based on the fandom that surrounds it, Supernatural has never shied away from letting the fans that love it and support it know that it loves them back.

In order to celebrate and explore the fans as well as the talent that ignites their passion and find out what its like to really, really, really, be a fan of something, the team at Art-is-fun asks for your help in launching the independent documentary Supernatural: 10 Yrs of Smiles!

This project will only see the light of day with your generous support!

Where sociology meets television studies!
Where sociology meets television studies!

Fandom is a word usually used to describe a subculture composed of individuals that gather around and dedicate significant portions of their time into exploring all aspects of an existing item/person/object.

The team behind art-is-fun would like to say we are true fans of Supernatural, several of our team members have at least seen every episode once and even read a few novels based on the show, but that kind of dedication pales in comparison to the amount of effort put in by those that truly love the show!

After attending our first Dragon-con in 2013, despite being residents of Atlanta since 1993, we were truly amazed by not only the amount of effort that goes into organizing a fan convention, but the wide array of people across the spectrum of life that it attracts. Each person with their own story, some who flew in from out of town, some local, some life time attendees all of various ages and cultural backgrounds coming together over the course of one weekend to celebrate and party along with the things they love most! The amount of time and effort a good number of these people put into creating costumes, studying the mythology, and every aspect of those involved in what they love was not only awe inspiring but also intriguing. The sociological aspects of the event got our wheels turning and we knew we wanted to make some form of a documentary or short on the subject.

We followed up by attending Anime Weekend Atlanta a few months later (this time with our cameras and the intention of learning more about convention culture) and were able to sit in on a small panel discussion between various convention showrunners and find out more about the people behind the scenes and what they deal with and the misconceptions people have about them.

What we aim to learn....
What we aim to learn....

Technology/Connectivity

In this day and age connecting with others who share the same amount of affection and love for the things you do only takes a few clicks, and with the advent of such things like Twitter, a lot of the time the people that create the things we grow to love are also just a click away, often there to give us immediate feedback.

Supernatural is a television show that takes full advantage of these increasingly fun and new interactive aspects of our daily lives, with show creators and actors live-tweeting alongside fans as they watch the premiere of the latest episode and with cast and crew friendly enough to dedicate their time and effort to support fan events across the globe, the family aspect that goes along with creating and producing 10 years of a television show is easily transmitted to the fans who tune in.

How do these changes in technology and access effect a show and its fan base?

What does this mean for the future of television shows like Supernatural when younger demographics are increasingly waiting to watch/stream an episode on their own after a show has aired?

How do things like live-tweeting effect ratings?

Social Rules and Boundaries

What exactly is a "Misha minion" and how exactly did they take over a wide swath of social media and the internet in general? Does tumblr exist for anything besides Supernatural fans? How did the Mishapocalypse come about and will there be another? They seem so nice but their numbers are vast and kind of scary....(thats a joke btw)

http://www.dailydot.com/society/tumblr-misha-collins-supernatural-spn/

http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=Mishapocalypse

In all seriousness though, we want to explore how this new level of interaction is also used to benefit the world in a positive way, with stars like Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Jared Padalecki, and others often using their access to loving fans to make the world a better place...

Things are not always fun and games though, with unprecedented access also comes the issues of boundaries and personal life. Fans sometimes forget that the people who work hard to bring us shows like Supernatural also have lives that extend beyond their duties to the show. There are often times where fan expectation clashes with the fact that the people involved in a show like Supernatural are still people. People with their own beliefs, morals, families, and passions that existed before the show and will continue to exist after the show. These characters and the world they inhabit can't exist forever and those behind them can't be expected to uphold them forever.

How far is too far when it comes to being a fan?

How much does an actor/creator owe the fans when something becomes a success?

What happens when Supernatural ends? How does it live on with fans and the creators?

Passion, Business, and Profit

Along with the passion and love of fans comes serious business, with millions of dollars being generated and going into creating a meeting place to express the camaraderie and love the legions of fans of a show like Supernatural have. Fan conventions for a variety of genres are becoming more and more prevalent with new ones popping up and getting funded on sites like this as well as established conventions growing and attracting more people each year. The influx of people and money into the cities and locations where some of these conventions are held can have a substantial effect on the local people and economy.

Often the creators of these conventions are just as big a fan or bigger fan of the shows than the people attending. It takes a lot of hard work that often goes unappreciated by those attending. We want to get to know the people who bring these events to us and give them their time to shine as well.

What makes someone start a fan convention? How much work is involved?

What happens when that convention becomes bigger than expected?

How much money do these conventions generate for those who run them and participate in them? Is it worth it? How much of their lives do they end up dedicating to something that was often a passion project that never stopped growing?

How do these type of conventions effect the cities they go to?

What happens to these conventions once a show ends or the stars move on to new projects?

How much will the fans follow/love the creators and actors when they move on to new projects? In a day and age where your amount of twitter followers can mean some serious income how important is your individual network to your continued success as an actor, writer, showrunner, or director?

Our documentary aims to explore the above issues and more with in-depth interviews and analysis from fans, cast, crew, and academic professionals in the fields of sociology, marketing, media, film, and television studies. We aim to explore what events turn someone into a true Supernatural fan, and what effect the phenomena has on those in, and around it. We want viewers of this finished product to come away with a better understanding of the world we currently live in as well as an appreciation for the hard work that goes into creating a television show that has lasted 10 years.

Most importantly we want you to come away with a feeling of love and understanding for all those involved as well as a smile after seeing the love and dedication people can have for things they are a "fan" of.

What we've done and what we have left....
What we've done and what we have left....

Right now we are in the pre-production phase of our documentary, outside of a small amount of footage shot at different fan conventions in 2013 we are still mainly in the planning phase. We need your help in securing interviews (be they on camera, or via phone/online communication) Interviews with academic professionals and fans are a little easier, but gaining access to some of those involved in the production of the show and the conventions will likely prove to be more difficult. We are hoping the promotion and support we get from this campaign will make things a little easier.

Our current to-do list includes....

-Research.

-Scheduling interviews with academics in the fields of sociology, social media, television studies, new media studies, mythology, theology, and more.

-Securing additional production equipment.

-Booking travel to several Supernatural and sci-fi related fan conventions frequented by fans, actors, creators, of the show. We had a set date and a set convention, but if you read above we had to recently change those dates in order to not step on another teams project.

Followed by....

-Filming hours upon hours of interviews and on location footage.

-Preparing that footage for editing/post-production.

-Post-production.

-Digital release of the finished project just in time for the start of season 10 of Supernatural.

Even brothers need help....be our Bobby/Cas!
Even brothers need help....be our Bobby/Cas!

This documentary aims to be a detailed and scientific overview and exploration of the subculture of fandom specifically as seen through the eyes of those that are a part of the Supernatural community. We want to show what the leading experts in their fields think about the community as well as tell the tales of those in the community that have had their lives changed by their love for Supernatural.

We already have the equipment and means to accomplish a smaller version of this documentary completely by ourselves, but we want to be able to give the subject matter the time and professional quality it deserves. This kickstarter campaign  will go towards funding the following aspects of this project....

- Shooting Fees a lot of these conventions can charge upwards of $5000 just for permission to bring our camera crews in. This Kickstarter will assure that we have the capital to be able to have proper access and bring our camera crew into the conventions and document the experience!

- Travel; When we initially launched this Kickstarter we had everything lined up to shoot at a specific convention on a specific date, but things have changed more than half way in and in order to make sure we aren't in conflict with another parties similar project that we were recently informed of, we will have to pick a new set of conventions to film at and are currently in the process of securing those dates. If this campaign is fully funded we should be able to make 2-3 trips to several different Supernatural or sci-fi genre conventions across the US and Canada to interview fans, actors, creators, and to document the fan convention phenomena.

Besides travel to conventions there will also be travel required to interview some of the fans who have submitted their stories to be told in the documentary, as well as travel to interview some of the academics/professors/authors/actors/creators that have agreed to grant us interviews if funded!

- Time; to research and create opportunities to interview a higher number of academic professionals, fans, crew, and cast.

- Editing; the travel and shooting are the easy parts, this project will likely require a minimum of 300 hours of just editing. That doesn't include the hours of rendering, converting, and transferring footage. This will be the brunt of the work and will require a team of at least 3 to dedicate a significant portion of their time to completing.

-Equipment; we already have one decent prosumer grade camera and mic from our existing business as well as the editing software to make this documentary look nice, but we definitely could use the help of a better second unit camera and additional mics. We also have a sufficient editing rig to complete the documentary on a smaller scale, but if this project gets funded and we shoot as much footage as we plan on we will also need to invest in a better editing rig to handle the workload.

-Interviews; considering a good portion of this documentary is about the fans we need to interview fans of the show from across the spectrum. Casuals that just tune in to every episode; Collectors that own merchandise and have watched every season of their DVD's multiple times; Creators who provide their own Supernatural related content to the community like podcasts, fanfiction, fanart, and fan sites; All the way to the die-hards who attend multiple conventions a year and know everything Supernatural from front to back! If you fit any of the above then contact us!

Since launching our inbox has been filled with amazing stories from the Supernatural fandom, and some of these people have really had their lives complettely changed for the better since finding their way to the show and its fandom. They have established life long friendships, become more socially aware and involved in charities, as well as become more comfortable in their own skin. We want to be able to tell all these stories as well as interview those involved in the show about their experiences as well!

Even if this doesn't get funded we still want to hear from you and it will help us make some version of this documentary come to life! Are you considered "famous" and a huge fan of Supernatural? We want to interview you as well...**cough** Aisha Tyler **cough** you know u want to talk to us about Supernatural!

We are asking for more than just a pledge!
We are asking for more than just a pledge!

With the new ways our generation is learning to process and consume content and the ability to distribute freely and easily this documentary does not have to be confined to the traditional 2 hr format. We can freely explore elements of this documentary in depth for hours at a time and if the question is something you want to explore with us, you can, if not you can only entertain the parts that you do enjoy. A normal documentary would only allow for a 10-15 minute segment that highlights the various types of fans Supernatural garners, by creating for online consumption we can follow any interesting threads we come across. If we choose to dedicate 40 minutes to the experience of non caucasian fans of Supernatural we can do that just as easily as we can dedicate 2 hours to the question of "Is Misha Collins as insane as his fans? or more insane? Hmmmm..." (another joke btw)

This project is by fans, for the fans, and will only succeed with the pledges and time commitment of those that want to see it come to fruition. We also want the fans and people who pledge to actively participate in the project. We really want to make this something special and more than your average documentary release.

By making the raw materials (footage, audio, graphics) available to the masses upon release of the finished product we seek to inspire others to make their own projects. Documentary film is something that can never really be unbiased, whether it involves what is captured on camera or how that footage is presented, there is always going to be some sort of human bias behind it. In order to make things interesting we want to see what the community will do with access to the same things we use to create our project. Make your own version of the documentary, Make your own film short, Make your own fan video. We can't wait to see what others are able to do with the materials we plan on working hard to provide....just let us finish our doc first.

Also this project will only be great with the help and participation of those involved in the creation of the show and the convention. Outside of twitter and a few contact emails for management we don't have any way of contacting someone like Eric Kripke, Jared, Jensen, Sera Gamble, and more for scheduling interviews. Sure we can still complete this project without their input but it won't be the same without it. Thankfully the nice people over at Creation Entertainment have decided to help us secure a good portion of the interviews with some of the guests from their convention, but that doesn't cover all the people we want to interview!

We hope that any publicity and contacts we get from getting this project off the ground will help in securing those interviews.

FAN INTERVIEWS (some of these will be in the main documentary, others in bonus materials)

Erin: Our first fan interview, Erin reached out to us on Twitter and has been one of our main supporters since we launched! Helping us promote on Twitter and Tumblr! A cancer survivor who loves enjoying Supernatural with her daughter! Located in Minnesota we plan on traveling to interview her in person! Erin has been planning on hitting the road ala Sam and Dean to meet up with fellow Supernatural fans! We can't wait to sit down with her and discuss more about how Supernatural has effected her life, the people it has introduced her to, and the smiles it has given her! Her enthusiasm for this project has been inspiring and a blessing! Follow her @SPNcrossroad

Chantelle: Our second fan interview! Since learning about our project she has been leading the charge on Facebook as well as Twitter!

We will be using her story to explore how the show reaches an international audience and how it is being a fan where the show doesn't even air in sequence if at all!

Born & raised in South Africa like most international fans she has had to jump through hoops to keep up with the show, but is up to date and has saved up for seasons 1 - 8 on DVD. Supernatural is the first show she has ever re-watched (we can relate) Despite the fact that the series shows irregularly and its seasons are scattered she has tried to make a fan convention happen in South Africa! We also can't wait to talk to her more in depth about her role playing of characters on social media! She has positive stories to tell about Jim Beaver (Bobby) and his agent! We will interview her via Skype! Follow her @SpnGlobe

Lisa: Our third fan interview, believes "Destial" is the greatest love story ever told, and depending on your interpretation of the show, she may just be right!

Lisa is going to be an amazing interview and gateway to exploring the phenomenon of "shippping"! A huge part of the fandom that sometimes gets criticized and shunned, but her love for the show (but mainly the actor Misha Collins) has encouraged her to actively live by the creed of Misha Collins' Random Acts charity organization. A great example of how those behind the show encourage others to do positive things in life!

Originally drawn to the show via social media, she is more of a fan of the actor Misha Collins than the show itself (though she does love the show). She feels a strong bond with the character of Castiel and that has led to an infatuation and love for the actor that plays him. We can't wait to learn more from her about exactly what drives her to commit time to exploring the relationship of two of the shows main two characters, how she perceives the way the show explores that relationship and more.

Brittany: Our fourth fan interview, the show helped pull her out of a dark point in her life and inspired her creativity and helped give her a new more positive take on life.

Brittany is an awesome example of the personal impact and change the show has had on some of the many fans it has birthed around the world. Supernatural was the catalyst for her to start turning her life around, analyzing her actions, and getting her creative juices flowing again.

She became a fan of the show after catching it in syndication on TNT years into its run, at a pretty dark time in her life Supernatural was one of the things she credits with pulling her out of a slump and putting her on the right path.

Meredith: Our fifth fan interview (but one of the first in our hearts) She has been one of the standout members of the #SPNFamily on Twitter helping us promote, based out of Atlanta like us, she will likely be our first fan interview conducted in person.

With 8 fan conventions under he belt (her first being in Spain) Meredith truly is one of the most amazing fan stories we've come across so far. Her story will help us show how the fandom forges bonds and brings people together who aren't close to each other physically. Plus she will be a great intro into the world of the fan convention! Her annual Supernatural Christmas parties with her fandom friends sound like blast!

After becoming a fan during season 4, she was soon all in with fan conventions and the online community. Did we mention she took a road trip with her convention friends to Lawrence, Kansas as a fun way to celebrate their love for the show! People like Meredith and the things Supernatural has inspired her to do is exactly what this project is about! Follow her @SPN_Hunter_67

Becky, Vinnie, Susan: Fandom interview #6 these 3 manage a pretty popular online fan website http://www.winchesterbros.com

These three are a great example of how dedicated the fandom can be and a great example of the good it can do especially in conjunction with the stars of the show to help make a real difference in the world!

Their fundraiser for the St Jude Children's Hospital in honor of the birth of Jared and Genevieve Padalecki's first son.  Raised over $41K and Jared and Genevieve matched it.  Go to http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/winchesterbros/fundraiserforstjudesinhonorofjaredandgenevievepada for more details.

Alice: Fandom interview #7 TV blogger and founder of www.TheWinchesterFamilyBusiness.com a site now with a staff of 16 writers, but it didn't start that way!

The picture perfect example of how one's love for the show can blossom into something much larger than ever inteneded. She never thought that posting reviews on her site would soon lead to a network of sites and interviews with the shows actors and creators at comic-con each year!

Her site promotes discussion and deep exploration of the themes in the show, and she has personally seen the growth of these fan conventions from small shows to the larger scale events that are going on today!

REMEMBER THIS ISN'T JUST A KICKSTARTER ABOUT PLEDGES AND A FINISHED PRODUCT! THIS PROJECT IS ABOUT US FANS AS WELL! WE AREN'T JUST ASKING FOR YOUR PLEDGES OR TO SPREAD THE WORD...WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

Outside of the main documentary we will also be releasing all raw materials and bonus content online as well! That means we can schedule and produce a lot more interviews and tell more fan stories than will be in the standard 2hr documentary!

Risks and challenges

To be honest we don't really see any issues with getting this project completed. The people behind it have years of experience when it comes to logistics and delegating the right people to get the job done. Not to mention we will be hands on for the majority of the project.

You will always be able to reach us on twitter and email to get status updates!

@SPN10yrsdoc
supernatural10yearsofsmiles@gmail.com

The only issue we could possibly see is being a few weeks late on the delivery time of the project, but even that is doubtful. Not to say we are bulletproof but we don't have a record of disappointing. In our other business life we have rarely ever had to issue a refund and have built our own network of repeat clients who trust us with their business. If we deliver for them then we surely deliver for all of you......lol, its not like we don't want to do this.

If you trust us enough to pledge then you can trust us to deliver! We will be providing routine updates via social media and email for all those involved/interested and will be accessible via email and twitter for any questions concerning the project.

To see just a small sample of our services and our past work for clients in the fields of video production and more you can always check out just one of our corporate sites over at www.cxkforever.com

Thanks for taking the time to read and pledge! See you at the finish line!

~With love, Cyprian
