Hey, you like enamel pins and my Twitch emotes right? So I'm combining them for you friends. All of the art is done by RabbitKun
Who am I and why you should get some of these adorable emotes in pin form!
So you're probably wondering who I am, and why you should get these pins when there are a bunch of other projects out there right? If you've ever seen I Need Diverse Games out in the wild, that was me! Well me being super salty about video games at o'dark thirty before work in October 2014 and now it's a non-profit foundation based in Chicago. That's not all I do!
I'm part of the Rivals of Waterdeep live play stream on twitch.tv/dnd, a partnered variety broadcaster on Twitch; and I often speak on issues of diversity, feminism, race, intersectionality & other topics at conventions. My writing appears in Uncanny Magazine, Polygon, Vice Gaming, Mic, Waypoint, Wiscon Chronicles, Paste Games & other publications. I'm also the editor of Game Devs and Others: Tales from the Margins (2018, CRC Press) and contributed to The Advanced Game Narrative Toolbox. (2019, CRC Press)
So why should I get these pins?
Because they are amazingly cute, will help put money in the pocket of the artist who did these and help fund some quality of life improvements for yours truly. Like dental work, and some more glasses.
What's the story behind some of the emotes?
There's a story to some of these emotes, believe it or not. The Genki came from occasional appearances on stream of my fussy old boy cat, Genki who can more often than not be heard on stream than not when he's chatty.
The Crash emote is due to my infamously bad video game driving. As evidenced in this Mafia III clip of me running right into the bayou. So I was a good sport about it, and had that emote commissioned for fun.
The Cozy emote came about due to discussions around being warm and cozy during a "Coffee with Cypher" chat one day. I lamented not having a cozy hoodie or blanket to bundle up in during a sub-zero temp day in winter. Note, the Cozy emote is yet to be unlocked on the channel, so this pin is the first anyone will get to see it outside of the discord.
Respect came out of a joke about pressing F for respects when I kept playing super difficult games where I happened to die a lot. It was a fun poke at the whole "press F for...." meme that's permeated geek culture.
Last emote origin story is for the D20 emote. I've recently gotten back into tabletop, and I'm on an actual play show on Wizard's of the Coast Twitch channel, as well as doing some RPG writing and consulting within TTRPG spaces; so the community asked for a D20 emote.
So, why am I doing this instead of just buying pins and selling them myself?
So glad you asked frond! The biggest thing is the up front cost of enamel pins with no guarantee on how well they will sell; plus the labor of packing and shipping myself. Not sure if folks reading this know how much they can cost someone up front before any sales happen. Or if you're getting them as a reward for supporters, you still need anywhere from $250 to maybe $500 for every 100 - 200 pins depending on who you order from.
There's been interest in the pins but hey money isn't plentiful enough to order and hope folks buy them after expressing interest. Thus, the Kickstarter idea came around. There's a chance for folks to get pins if they are interested and if they aren't, then this can get chalked up as an experiment in merchandising for Team Cypher.
So which emotes will be made into pins?
Sparkly D20* = This would be a D20 pin with an overlay of glitter, as the gradient would be hard to reproduce on a pin.
UNLOCKED! Goal 1 ~ $4,000
You gotta have goals right? So when we hit $4K, the next batch of pins will be unlocked. Get Hype, give someone The Look(tm), hydrate or get a good cry out with this set of pins.
UNLOCKED! Goal 2 ~$4,500
Who doesn't love a good D20 pin? Show your love for rolling some nat 20's with this sparkly D20, give a hug, appreciate some shiny loot, or show your inquisitive side with a hmm? pin.
UNLOCKED! Goal 3 ~ $5,000
This is it, unlocking these means we're funded! You can show how often you rage out at a thing, get a bit stabby, show off those pro lurking skills or show if something made you LOL so hard you cried.
How many can I get?
That depends on you! There are bundle options and there will be one mega bundle for one of each pin on offer. There are options from 1 to 6, 10, 15 and 20 pin bundles.
An emote I like isn't being offered!
I'm not offering the Fenris finger gun emote since I don't have a license from Bioware™ to use him for making a profit or otherwise commercial usage; it won't happen cause licensing is expensive AF. The Hey Y'all emote was barely used, so it's been retired and I made the choice to leave it off of the pin offerings.
Who's fulfilling this if it gets funded?
I'll be using Geekify who would handle production, and most importantly SHIPPING these all out to you all. This will include worldwide shipping as a lot of friends and supporters are international.
Why aren't they all available in one go?
Well, we need something to reach for right? If all the pins are unlocked at day one, then there's not a lot to aim for. Long as the KS funds in full, all 20 designs will be unlocked for backers.
So, stretch goals right?
Stretch goals are all fun and games but here's the thing. If this funds, I've only got one in mind. Patches of certain emotes and a bonus for folks who order some of the bundles. If we hit other stretch goals, then we'll figure it out together.
UNLOCKED! Stretch Goal the first ~ $6,000
Patches available for the first eight pin designs. Product image to be updated once we get some mock-ups.
Stretch Goal the second ~ $7,000
Just like with the pin designs, this batch of patches will unlock if we hit the $7K stretch goal!
Stretch Goal the third ~ $8,000
Just like with the pin designs, this batch of patches will unlock if we hit the $8K stretch goal!
Stretch Goal the fourth ~ $9,000
Last but certainly not least, all 20 designs will unlock as patches you can add on if we make it to $9,000.
What if I want multiples of a certain pin but still buy the bundle?
That's totally fine! Just note how many of each design you want, as long as they add up to the total of your bundle. For example if you wanted 4 Genki, 4 Hi and 4 coffee if you get a bundle, that's ok! The only exclusion will be the Shiny Hunter Deluxe edition bundle which is one of each design.
How will I pick which pins I want and the quantity?
That's what the backer survey will be for! You'll get a chance to confirm your address, which tier you picked and to choose which pins you want at that time.
What will you do with the money after everything is paid and shipped out?
This money will go towards some Q.O.L improvements for my streaming space. Anything left over will go towards stock for conventions, and socking it away for things like medical costs, and some travel overlap from what I already do for I Need Diverse Games.
Will RabbitKun get a cut of the profits?
Absolutely! I'm giving her a 10% cut of any profits from this Kickstarter after fulfillment, fees & shipping is paid out. It's her art and as such I would be remiss not to compensate her for profit made on these beyond use on Twitch. Please support RabbitKun by commissioning her for Twitch emotes and other art. You can see her work on my channel, as well as StephenKil and TrippingCrutch on Twitch.
What's the breakdown of costs and profit?
- Cost for minimum number of pins
- Shipping estimate (could be way off but estimated $1K USD for shipping)
- 10% of Goal for RabbitKun to take in
- Remainder (after KS fees, which aren't estimated in here) as profit
Are there minimums you have to hit for each pin design?
Yes! I have to order a minimum of 50 pins per design to make it cost effective. I'm sure some pins will be more popular than others, but we'll just make requested pins after the KS ends.
Why not just do a GoFundMe or something if you need money?
Because this gets people something neat and fun instead of me putting out a GFM when there's not a pressing need. When I've had an urgent need before, I'd done a crowdfunding thing to varying degrees of success. This is strictly a hey, people asked me for this thing but I do not have money to do all this up front; thus another wild Kickstarter has appeared.
When will I get my pins & any stretch goal add-ons?
Long as we hit at least $5,000 (the base goal) production, and shipping should have them in your mailboxes by mid to late September 2019. Backers will be updated at each phase of the campaign, and again fulfillment is via Geekify who have done this for many, many Kickstarters.
If I miss out on the Kickstarter will there be a chance to buy any at a convention or by other means?
If there are enough left after the Kickstarter ends and is fulfilled; then I'll bring extras with me to conventions or depending on stock, my travel schedule and ability for post office runs; it's a possibility these would be available via an online order form. It's TBD until we see how well the KS does and how many pins are left over once all is said and done.
Risks and challenges
Biggest risk is getting this KS actually funded and not burn out trying to do this thing. Other risk is certain pins getting more traction than others when a minimum per pin has to be ordered. That's 50 if you were curious.
Time management isn't a big concern because Geekify will be doing fulfillment and shipping to backers! I've learned my lesson after doing a couple small batches of pins to Twitch supporters and buyers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
