A mysterious woman’s dying words send the adventurers on the path to find the temple of the Egyptian God Thoth. Secrets to Thoth's genesis are hidden within. Could they lead the adventurers to an ancient lost Greek civilization?
In Thoth's Wake is a scene-based pulp adventure written for use with the Fate Core roleplaying game (RPG) system. It's loosely set in the 1930s and assumes the players will be taking on the roles of a group of adventurers united in some cause. Playing through this adventure will take between two and four standard-length roleplaying sessions. It contains six possible major scenes and includes five different maps of various locations.
In Thoth's Wake - Zine Quest Edition! will only be available through this Kickstarter and this month's Zine Quest. In a zine format (5.5" x 8.5"), it's looking to be about 42 pages long. This could change depending upon layout and art.
Fate Core was designed to be open world and non-linear, which seems counter to designing an “adventure module” such as this. However, I've noticed several Fate-specific discussion threads with players and game masters lamenting the lack of pre-generated adventures. Likewise, game masters new to the Fate Core system may be more comfortable with the familiar adventure module format.
As a Fate game master, you can use this adventure in whole or in part. If you like the story but Fate isn’t your cup of tea, it should be fairly trivial to strip out those bits and drop in your preferred system-specific mechanics and characters. Perhaps you just like some of the scenes and would like to reskin them for your campaign. Or maybe you'll just enjoy the maps or Non-Player Characters.
However you decide to use In Thoth's Wake, enjoy!
"... a woman steps out from hiding. Her presence radiates from her. She exudes confidence and conviction. She wears a feather headdress with a long curved beak and long draped wings. Several strands of ibis skulls hang from her neck. She carries a war staff, tipped with a crooked serpent’s head on one end, and a two-pronged fork on the other. This is Adia Bomani, leader of the Cult of Djehuti (Thoth), and she offers the player characters one chance:
"Leave these sacred grounds, else be judged by Djehuti on your way to the afterlife."
Fate Core is a 2014 Ennie Award Winning roleplaying game system. The players run capable and proactive characters in any world or setting they can dream up. The system is story-driven and utilizes a set of four Fate Dice. You can pick up the rules and dice either online or at your friendly local game store. Beyond that, all you need to run Fate Core is some paper, pencils, and friends—of course!
Who are you?
I'm Jon. I've been playing and running roleplaying games since the late 80's. I've been writing stories about and creating tools and maps for RPGs for some time now. You can find some of those musings on my blog. However, this is my first "big" project.
I was first introduced to the Fate system through Spirit of the Century. Since then I've been a big fan of Fate and have run several adventures, pulp and otherwise. I've pretty much had In Thoth's Wake written in one form or another for years. Since hearing gamers on forums asking for concrete adventures designed for Fate, I decided I should formalize it. When Zine Quest was announced, this seemed like the best time to get it out there.
This will be a limited Zine Quest Edition. If it funds, I'll be able to purchase some more art (I've made the maps and have selected Creative Commons and public domain photos) and hopefully pay some talented individuals to help me tighten it up!

Certain things in this world would not be possible without help from talented people. The same is true for In Thoth's Wake - Zine Quest Edition! In this case those talented people are:
Eli Kurtz - Eli, my 'Kickstarter Consultant', has been instrumental in helping me get this Kickstarter to where it is. His Savage Worlds setting The Blackwood was also crowdfunded into existence. He runs a mean game of Blades in the Dark, is co-host of Jianghu Hustle, and has a sexy voice!
Eric Simon - Eric is the sole proprietor of Four-in-Hand Games and has published both the Steamscapes and the Rockalypse roleplaying games and supplements. He's got quite a solid catalog on DriveThruRPG! Eric is no stranger to Fate, as Rockalypse and Rockalypse Accelerated utilize the fate system.
Colin and Cameron Kyle - Colin has offered to do the 'zine layout. Cameron will be doing the cover layout. As BOTH halves of Wrong Brothers Gaming, Colin and Cameron are no strangers to Kickstarter. Check out their stand-alone RPG, Axon Punk: Overdrive.
Martin Burnham - Martin and I have been playing RPGs together for almost as long as I've known him. As a matter of fact, he's one of the original In Thoth's Wake playtesters! We've written a Fiasco playset together entitled The Depot and have worked together on Play the Game Podcast. He's that one guy who was always sketching out his PC at the gaming table, so I've asked him to do the same for me!
Risks and challenges
Here are potential sticking points I forsee:
Writing: The text is already written and just needs a couple of edit passes.
Fulfillment: I've tried to get all the fulfillment gears into place. I've tried to include a realistic buffer and then some for how long I expect to take to get it into the hands of backers.
Kicksplosion or 'What if it does too well?': I don't expect it to, but stranger things have happened. The fulfillment will be handled by DriveThruRPG. As such, they can handle any size fulfillment.
Anything else?: I have some of the greatest game design minds of the Chicago Area pushing me along and answering my multitudinous questions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
