Obduction for VR (and more) Update

Obduction is now available for VR on Oculus Rift. We hope you were able to take advantage of your early access from the Oculus Store on Friday, but if not, today’s update on all stores (Oculus, Steam, GoG, Humble) now supports VR on the Oculus Rift! A copy of today’s press release is here.

Here are a few things you should know about Obduction for VR… 

  • Obduction is easily explorable with the Oculus Remote - it works very naturally, and if you haven’t tried it you really should! Of course you can also play with a wide range of gamepads.
  • The default method for exploration in VR is “Blink” mode, and it's reminiscent of the original Myst. This method of navigation (like teleporting) is widely used in VR for the most comfortable experience.
  • For “hard core” VR players who can handle a more intense experience, we’ve also included “Free” navigation mode that is similar to standard FPS controls. It’s accessible in the Controls menu.
  • You can play Obduction in VR either seated or standing. Feel free to try both to see which one suits you.
  • We have optimized Obduction while trying not to compromise its sweeping vistas and meticulous detail. This high level of immersive integrity may require a bit more performance than other VR titles.

And here is even more about our latest update… 

  • We’ve added NVIDIA Ansel support which lets you take panoramic, high-resolution, and even 3D spherical images that are viewable with almost any VR hardware.
  • Obduction is now playable in gorgeous HDR with newer NVIDIA graphics cards and an HDR display. 
  • If you have certain Razer Chroma-enabled devices then you're in for a treat. The colors will match some of the locations and events that you experience while exploring. 
  • Oh, and we’ve made a plethora of art, UI, and tech fixes!

      I've got a FOVE (www.getfove.com) headset on the way (I also backed them on Kickstarter -- they're finally starting to ship!) and I'm hoping to use it with Obduction someday!

      You guys could have a ton of fun adding foveated rendering (eye-tracking for dynamic depth of field, targeting, etc) to Obduction for a more natural, immersive VR experience!

      Also, you mentioned HDR and nVidia in the same sentence. AMD'S latest GPUs (Rx480 etc) also support HDR... do you suppose it will "just work" or does it require special support in the code above and beyond what you've enabled for nVidia?

      @Ian well as of this July (assuming their CS team is familiar with the project) they hoped to have Vive support implemented within Q4 2016. That was before Oculus had started buying exclusivity deals though, so I'm optimistically hoping for 3-6 months from now.

      @ Grant I expect you are probably right about the exclusivity deals regarding games, it really doesn`t bother me `When` a Vive version is available I and many other backers would just like to be re-assured that there `Will Be` one at some point. Not much to ask really is it.
      A simple statement `Yes there will be Vive support ................... or no there won`t.

      For the past few months, when many other companies have gone completely silent about Vive support it has tended to mean that Oculus paid them for a timed exclusivity deal. This may not be the case with Obduction, but from my past experience watching these games I'd say it's extremely likely. If this is the case, now that it's released on the Oculus store we could probably expect a Vive release in 3-6 months, which seems to be the average timeframe for these exclusivity deals.

      They once said support for other headsets would come later. I think if they are going to add support for the vive they will include some kind of Vive controls

      @Caroline I am sure the question about the boxed version has already been answered I am also waiting for that too.
      Sad thing is it is probably not very difficult to change the game from Rift support to Vive it is just disappointing that Cyan is not even commenting on the questions being asked by many many fellow backers.
      Its a great game for sure but disappointing that they didn`t release it for both headsets and now seem to be ignoring the question.
      Don`t expect an instant result but after over 3 years of in bending support and patience it doesn`t seem to demanding to ask for an answer to a valid question.

      Despite not being a big problem for me, I am kind of shocked that they didn't develop Vive support either. Common Cyaninc, you guys should know better than this.

      Good up date but very disappointed that despite numerous requests for Vive support news it has not even been mentioned. Giving away VR keys but no good news for all the backers who now own Vive instead of Rifts.
      Bit disappointing in that respect.

      The only flaw with the VR version is that "free" mode uses that clunky jump-turning, instead of free rotation, which unfortunately, almost completely destroys the otherwise amazing immersion experience. And sadly (for me anyway) renders the game almost unplayable in VR mode.

      Waiting for Vive release and waiting for my physical copy. Tried playing Obduction with Revive on my Vive but it doesn't work. :*(

      +! for the option to enable free rotation - makes for a much more immersive experience. I do realise that not everyone can handle it, but keeping it as an option for those who can handle it and prefer it is the best of both worlds (I'd keep the so-called comfort mode as default though - it's safer that way).

      I was waiting for Vive support too but couldn't hold off, played it through. Was fun but I think it would have been much better in VR. Please work on Vive support now that the Rift is done. I'll definitely play through again if this gets done!

      Really liking Obduction so far, with one *really* annoying exception.

      Is free rotation mode available? It's neat that I can turn my head to head in a slightly different direction, and the analog movement works well -- but this teleport-turning breaks the illusion. I go from exploring this wonderful, fascinating, immersive world to playing a broken video game.

      Please, please fix this. It's a terrible flaw on what is otherwise one of my favorite games.

      Looking forward to playing on the rift! Been holding out for the release, but I never received my oculus key, who should I contact?

      It would help to know if bug fixes pertain to Mac and PC releases both—or is it best to still hold off till Dec. for Mac updates? Are these latest updates always pushed to Steam and GOG?

      Me, too. I'm holding off to play it on Vive. Let's hope that doesn't mean I never play it.

      Really hoping there is vive support soon. I've been holding of playing the game until I can use my vive with it.
