Keep Calm, and Mind the Gap!

Hey, restless natives,

So sorry for the gap in our updates. Let us assuage your fears a bit. Obduction is looking really good - in fact, we continue to do behind-the-back testing with the worlds we have "testable" -- and it's awesome!

We really weren't trying to delay any updates -- it's one of those things where we keep thinking we'll have a bit more news in a day or two, and we keep thinking we'll do the update at that point. Aaaaaand -- well the time gets away, because we are all still here busy building Obduction.

Anyway, suffice it to say that we're sorry for the gap. Things are going really, really well... but just a hint... we're much more inclined to do what we can to make Obduction the best it can be. We'll give you a larger update as soon as we can get all of our information ducks in a row. We promise!

Thanks for the update! I am not much of a game girl..but I was in my masters program when Myst came out... It mesmerized me! I was obsessed! Can't wait for Obduction... want it to be everything you want it to be..Will be pledging more.

Thanks for the Update, but i Think a short update from time to time a bit often sould not be such a hard thing to do. So please engage a litte in informing your backers. Often a few words aout the progress and a short screenshot about something new would be enough.

The comment section on Kickstarter can be SO INTENSE.
Game development is super difficult, so people should relax a bit, and let the folks do their work.
      Everything's going to be ok.

    5. Ian G G Smith on

There we go not much of an update but one never the less. I have no doubt that the game will be excellent I never have had, I just expect as a backer a little bit of feedback now and again that is all.
So thanks for the acknowledgement and we shall look forward to some more tidbits as and when they are available.

I appreciate this update and am willing to wait however long it takes for Obduction. In the meantime, I resurrected an old PowerMac Desktop G3 (upgraded) and have Myst Masterpiece, Riven, Myst III: Exile, Pegasus Prime, Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time, Obsidian, Starship Titanic, The Dig, and a couple others running very well. All of these are replays (best is Riven IMHO) but will keep me and wife busy until Obduction captures us.

      Go, Cyan!

Lets all remember that Riven took 4 years to make and this was pre-internet for the most part. I don't think a single screenshot surfaced until 1996 (3 years after Myst).

I'm mopre worried about the game not getting hyped enough in the public consciousness. No Man's Sky is being marketed to death and has a huge following despite having no release date yet. I want Cyan to be making GOTYs like they did in the 90s and these types of games to truly make a big mainstream comeback. I just hope that Obduction will be hyped and marketed so as to attract newcomers to the genre rather than the old Myst fans. Cyan deserves to be selling millions of units, I just hope they can reach enough people. This means more freqient updates and screenshots, interviews etc..

Also, I sure hope RAWA recovers fine. He invented the D'ni language and has been a tour-deforce from Myst to Riven to Uru. We need him.

Thank you so so so much!!! That is all we wanted to see :) I don't care even if you have to delay the game I want it perfect. Just an simple update say hey we are here still working is fine. Thank you again for the update. I am excited about the game.

So thanks for that "little update" I hope I don't have to play "Grim Fandango" again waiting for your game.... I do need to brush up on my Spanish.

I'm patiently waiting, but the update I'm most interested in is the release date.

It's fun the read (some of) the behind the scenes information (I too am staying far away from spoilers, only have seen the lantern), but in the end all I really care about is when I can explore the new world myself.

      Any news on that front?

    11. foodandart on

Very nice, thank you. Am avoiding as much of the game images as possible - I want this to be a completely, for me, unknown event. Just get the game, install and off on my own to work it out.

One question - perhaps I missed it, am really honestly trying to stay away from any spoilers and avoiding most of the updates - but who have you got lined up to make the musical score for the game?

    12. Arnaldo Roman on

      The textures look appropriate.
The dynamic flow was cool and promising for the puzzles.
I'm seeing a bunch of imagery in popular media, like the snow cloud tree.
      Any one see The Walk?

    13. Criswell The Tiny Epic Weatherman on

I have seen a VERY small minority of projects that deliver on time. I'm not worried

I wasn't worrying, but the people who were worrying needed some reassurance, so thanks for that, Rand.

    22. Specie8470 on

@Nygel delays equal more chances for stuff to go wrong like them running out of funding and or core members of the team dying off and one of the workers on the game just had to go in for brain surgery to remove part of his brain so thats not good for the game other members could also just disappear and run away.

      Absolutely.

Folk don't seem to realise, delays are very good things. All they mean is the game is that the end result is a better game.

Cyan have a long history of delivering this is no Godus or Star Citizen. Let Cyan do their thing. =)

    27. K on

yeah, release it now in 16bit form. Bruhhh, just wait or ask for your money back. We will get it at some point- not like some other rip off projects in Kickstarter.

    28. Specie8470 on

@Ed Soniat how about a status on the release of the game that's supposed to be out this month and obviously won't be they can't even state it will be delayed.

    29. Specie8470 on

Would it be to much to say the game is not comming out this month as scheduled because I am not seeing that in this update and you could atleast say the game will be delayed. At the rate I see it it's not even comming out in 2015.

A one line on the budget would be nice. Something simple and honest like: "We definitely have enough money." or "We probably have enough money." or "We might not have enough money" or "We probably don't have enough money".

    31. Aurelien VANDOORINE on

Good to know, no big worries.
Will we get to know a little about what was said/shown at mysterium that was talked about in august but I've not seen anything from that event since then (or I might have missed something).
Also I guess it is what is happeneing but it won't release this month right (I don't remember a delay being announced, but then again I might be wrong, it's a bit hard to follow :p)

Let me translate this into English.

      > Hey, restless natives,

We listened to the PR people.

      > Obduction is looking really good

Which is why we're not posting a single screenshot, which would take all of 5 seconds.

      >We continue to do behind-the-back testing with the worlds we have "testable" -- and it's awesome!

Which is why we're not telling you about any of it, and are late on updates.

      >We really weren't trying to delay any updates -- it's one of those things where we keep thinking we'll have a bit more news in a day or two, and we keep thinking we'll do the update at that point. Aaaaaand -- well the time gets away, because we are all still here busy building Obduction.

Deep down we know this, but we're in denial, because we have no concrete schedule for these things.

      >Anyway, suffice it to say that we're sorry for the gap. Things are going really, really well... but just a hint... we're much more inclined to do what we can to make Obduction the best it can be. We'll give you a larger update as soon as we can get all of our information ducks in a row. We promise!

We're not sorry, we're just terrified of becoming another in the long line of Kickstarter projects. But an angel investor may have given us more money despite all of the above, so who knows, this project might see the light of day and not be terrible.

Thank you so much for the update, Rand!
That line about making Obduction "the best it can be" got me thinking about hints you've dropped in recent interviews about the "scope of the game", possibly making it bigger and better, but then the Kickstarter funds only provided for the "bare bones" of the project, and a thing or two about some getting additional funds (investors?) to finish the game as it was meant to be finished. As long as you don't sell out (haha), I rather wait a bit more and explore a much better Obduction universe!

    38. Kevin SgtPepper Geaney on

Hey Cyan! I still haven't received my T-shirt!

    39. Tom Evans on

I'm not concerned or worried. Cyan has a proven track record and I would rather wait and have a better product than have things rushed and be less enjoyable.

You guys made Myst, Riven, and URU, all incredible ambitious and world-changing creations. I certainly trust you to make Obduction and do what needs to be done to make it the best it can be. Honestly, I'd rather you do that than rush things and not have it be blow-away awesome. :)
