One year ago : Part 2
Ryan here again. The last update continued to ramble on, so I thought I'd break it up into two parts. I've received some feedback that the last update "starts off reading like a "we're sorry, we've run out of money and the game is never going to happen." Let me assure you that is not the case!
Where are we now?
I'm happy to say I can play through the full game in a very rough pre-pre-pre-alpha state. It doesn't look visually pretty yet, but it's there. The core team has been working since May, and we continue to add new members every few months. We are trying to be very smart about the budget and decided to ramp up in stages instead of all at once. We will have more info about the team soon. We also hope to update the Obduction website soon, but we now officially own www.obduction.com. YAY! The team just continues to work toward a release late next year. We are excited to have you Obducted.
Where are the rewards?
As part of the Obduction Backer calendar, we stated that T-shirts would have already been sent to you. Whoops! Everything takes longer than expected, and because we want to keep the team small, everyone is taking on multiple roles. (Rand is even the maintainer of the Kickstarter/Paypal database code.) This all to say, we are being very careful up front so we can provide you the best possible experience later. Soon (in the next 2 weeks or so) you will all receive a receipt from the campaign. Read over it, confirm that everything is correct. If everything is correct, we won't need you to write us back.
Once we have 99% of the receipts at the level where we want them, then we will place the T-shirt order and ship them out to you.
The delay also allows us to revisit the shirt design so it is something truly special - exclusively for the backers. We will show you the new design soon.
We are excited to announce that the Cyan Store is again open for business. One of the first items we are selling is a very limited edition 20th anniversary Myst poster. You can order today! http://cyan.com/community-2/store/
Other Obduction news
Recently reporter Hayden Dingman came to Cyan to find out more information about the production of Obduction. Next time I'll have to be a little more careful what I say. (Not really, though.) The article is a great source of what we have been up to the last few months. It is a little spoilerish, so be prepared. Thank you, Hayden, for this great inside look. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2690802/deep-dive-qa-behind-the-scenes-of-obduction-cyans-move-beyond-myst.html
A Legendary deal
Some of you might have already read the leaked story that Cyan Worlds signed a deal with Legendary. It is true. You can read more about it in this article. http://venturebeat.com/2014/10/07/cyan-cuts-deal-with-legendary-to-create-a-tv-series-based-on-myst/
Rand also clarifies more of this deal in this article. http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2014/oct/14/cyan-agrees-to-myst-tv-deal/
In the last update I said, "we would get any friends / former co-workers of Cyan to help us create a successful pitch". I'm just going to link to those close individuals who helped the Kickstarter campaign.
Many more friends and family helped me on a personal level. Thanks for supporting this dream.
Kicking it Forward
Everyone should check out this Kickstarter project from Dejobaan Games. You explore dead civilizations and then write about what you find. Fantastic! Elegy for a Dead World: A Game About Writing Fiction? Back it on Kickstarter! kck.st/1sLKJnw
Thanks for reading, and I hope to write again soon,
