What our project is: We made a website (www.datesim.org) that runs Visual Novels with a Steam-like front facing interface.
What are visual novels? Visual Novels are games that are a lot like the old "Choose Your Own Adventure" books. They read like a novel with lots of branching paths that you can take, but they're visual because they have a game screen displaying the story as the game and novel portions move on.
What does Steam-like mean? Steam is a game store and utility that allows you to easily and instantly buy games you like and then play them from wherever you can login to Steam. We wanted to capture this, so our store allows you to buy our novels from an account, then play them anywhere else you can login to your account at.
So what games would we be getting if we donate? We're trying to make Visual Novels of all genres and kinds. Some with lots of branches and game play, some with very little or none. We have a romantic pirate themed game, a whacky magical academy game reminiscent of many fun anime series, an alternative genre game where you're a ruthless (and gay) demon pirate who has to keep his monstrous crew in line, and we have so many more planned. Not only that but you have the chance to tell us what to make!
So how do you play all the games? You can make an account and then login to our site from just about anything that can surf the web! What this means is you can play your game from anything with web access. Play your games on your home computer in the morning. Login on your bus-ride to work and buy a new game and start playing it right then and there. Pick up any of your saved games from Facebook at work when nobody is watching. We require users make an account on the site because we track saved games and purchases through that account. Accessing the site from anything besides a normal computer at the moment won't look too pretty yet, but we're working on that. Part of the reason why we need your help ;)
So what're you going to do with all this? We dream of having hundreds of visual novels. Something for everyone, all accessible in nice little place that you can pick up from your computer, phone, or Facebook. We're doing a lot of stuff in-house, but we're reaching out to niche and indie authors as well to turn their work into Visual Novels, and have lots of plans to port or localize lots of other Visual Novels for our site.
So what do you need the money for? We've been doing this project for free for about two or three years if you count some serious planning. We're releasing games and hoping to turn a profit on those, but development is slow when nobody gets paid. We'd immediately use the money to free up people's time to get things done quicker. Money for us would mean the games would come out much quicker. The version of our site for Facebook/iPhone/Android would be looking nice quicker. Right now other platforms work with our site, they just looks pretty awful without proper modification for each particular platform. And of course we have plenty of coding work and bugs we need to slog through, and doing all this with very limited time with no money has been quite a feat. Lastly we'll definitely probably start paying more of our hosting and tool costs with any cash that comes in.
Questions? Comments? This description was re-written to be as clear and concise as possible. One of our backers said it was very confusing so I thought I'd re-write it right now, cause honestly she and everyone else on Kickstarter deserve it anyway. With that in mind, I'll add and edit to this description if anyone has questions. Shoot a comment over on the comments tab if you do!
