HERE'S THE STORY, THEN SCROLL DOWN FOR KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE BANAGO REWARDS
For the first time ever, the KICKSTARTER community has the opportunity to help rescue typhoon victims in the Philippines and to do so in the world-famous Banago™ style.
Banago™ products—chic island wild grass bags and home accessories—were available in high-end retail stores in the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and around the globe. Familiar sellers include J. Crew, Anthropologie, Nordstrom, Tommy Bahama and Beams Japan plus many others.
With Renee’s success and the prosperity of her artisan friends the business was growing and expanding an important cottage industry in the Philippines where Renee is from. Tragically, the typhoon destroyed Banago’s entire production network including the homes of most of its producers and with your help we can restore the livelihoods of hundreds of typhoon victims and Banago™.

A Letter from Livelihood United
Livelihood United is excited to be pioneering a new approach for rebuilding economies after major natural disasters, by working with Banago to provide sustainable livelihoods following Typhoon Haiyan.
How did all this come about? In February, the United Nations Development Programme requested our help to design their livelihood recovery program for the island of Samar. The challenge was to restore a local economy that currently mirrors the physical ruins surrounding it, amid the increasing withdrawal of international aid.
Surveys showed that Haiyan destroyed over 90% of the island’s coconut which had been the pre-storm livelihood source to more than one-fourth of the residents – and regrowth would take ten years. The loss of this key industry and setbacks to all others, has left over a million workers without income opportunities to rebuild their crumpled homes.
Seeing firsthand the destruction of the local communities, and the natural resources that once fueled their economy, we were honored to accept the UN’s request.
Our inspiration came from meeting local leaders like Ms. Renee Patron who had self-organized and given countless hours of service in providing thousands of meals, school supplies, and even boats for local fishermen. She had become the ‘go to’ person for many international NGO's and was critical in helping countless relief efforts. Observing her vision and influence, inspired a new grass-roots approach to livelihood restoration.
Instead of asking donors to merely back a nonprofit project, we’re showing the world how you, as Banago backers, can breathe new life directly into a promising business that can immediately resume production and provide sustainable livelihood to hundreds of local farmers and artisans.
We hope Banago’s success leads to future opportunities to cooperate with you in support of the other inspiring business we are working with and are eager to unite with you through future campaigns.
And to think, you get all that in a beautiful bag! Thank you for supporting this project.
