About

Salty is a vessel to cook with and pass salt at the table + a print magazine all about salt.

Salt has defined human society for centuries. Ancient trade routes, also called “salt roads”, were once built to transport salt; today we use salt to melt icy highways. Salt has always been valued for seasoning fresh food, and remains invaluable for preserving food. Salted meat and fish last longer, so having salt means gaining time. Even our modern English word ‘salary’ is derived from the ‘salarium’ Roman soldiers received – payment in salt, or their monthly allotment of salt.
 

Our bodies need salt to function. And throughout history, we have sought out evaporated lakes, salt marshes, and underground salt streams to extract this mineral, so crucial to human life.
 

The Salty project explores how salt still connects us. We feel better when we eat together, when we cook with each other, and when we share stories.

Salty (the vessel) gives salt presence on the table where you eat, and by your side while you cook.

A modern salt cellar meant to last generations, the Salty vessel has a lid you can slide with one hand, a body of corrosion-resistant medical grade 316 stainless steel, a rubber pad to protect any surface it rests on, and a glass bead blast finish.

All three parts of the Salty vessel easily come apart, for refilling and cleaning (it’s dishwasher safe). The opening is made for all sizes of hands to reach in and pinch salt at the table or at the stove. We chose stainless steel as a modern metal, appropriate for contact with food, and in a grade to resist corrosion.

The Salty vessel is based on a ‘nef’ from medieval European courts, when a finely-wrought silver or gold object, often a ship, was placed on a royal table to indicate the dinner guest of honor. Within the nef was a drawer or drawers with salt and precious spices – and we wondered, what would a modern heirloom salt container look like? 

Let’s give salt a place of honor on the modern table.

Salty (the magazine) brings us stories of salt, and helps us ponder how salt moves through the world. 

What does it feel like to crunch barefoot through forming salt flakes on a giant mirror that stretches in every direction? Why do indigenous people no longer eat some of the native animals in these places? How is evaporated salt production changing in the twenty-first century? In 100+ pages, Salty Magazine visits seven salt locations in six countries to understand contemporary salt tourism. 

Learn the true name of the Salar de Uyuni and why the name matters, walk into a salt cave in Chile, sleep in a community salt hotel, run across hollow salt crust toward a perfect volcano, watch generations tend a family salt plot, blow out a tire in a desert, and visit a Maya salt production hub. Salty Magazine ties these significant salt locations to each other with photos and stories and poems. Recipes mark the beginning of every section in the magazine. Crossing checkpoints in airports, buses, and rental cars, consider with us that the Pleistocene lakes (evaporated to create the salt flats) existed millennia before current nations were created or their borders drawn. 

Salty magazine ships with every Salty vessel, and can also be backed in its own reward level.

Who we are

Salty is a collaborative project between Kristen Taylor (aka kthread) and Che-Wei Wang and Taylor Levy (CW&T).

Kristen Taylor (kthread) is the creator of Saucy, a six-issue independent print magazine about how food connects – and disconnects – us. She has worked at Serial podcast, Al Jazeera, PBS, and taught courses at NYU’s ITP graduate program, where CW&T met. She backed CW&T’s Pen Type-A in 2011 and has kept the pen on her bedside table ever since. This is Kristen’s third project on Kickstarter. She is @kthread online, and her company is kthread Productions

CW&T is the art and design practice of Che-Wei Wang + Taylor Levy. We live in a world of our own making. It's a world where every object has its purpose, although not always purposeful, and where common objects receive uncommon consideration. This is CW&T’s 8th project on Kickstarter. Risks and challenges

Between CW&T and kthread, this is our 11th kickstarter campaign! We're committed to delivering the highest quality, most thoughtful work imaginable. We understand the risks of manufacturing physical products and print magazines.

As with our other projects, we do not compromise quality. If at any point this means a project delay to make sure things are perfect, that's the way we go. Our priority is to make things properly.

When making anything new, there are always unknowns and points of failure. That said, we are accountable to our supporters and do everything in our power to cover our bases so everyone is happy.

We're looking forward to this adventure with you all, whether it's your first, second, third, fourth. fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh???!!!! time working with us. :)
