We've got some pens!

We’ve got pens!  310 pens !

This is less than we were expecting today, but better fewer good quality pens, than getting extra ones that we would need to reject.

Considering everything so far, this is a HUGE and promising start.

We are going through them now and so far they look great! That is good news.

Next steps …

Quality Control

This weekend our fabricators are coming to NYC so we can all go through a sampling of these pens together.  We will be taking measurements, and doing quality control tests so that we can make sure that we are all on the same page for ongoing quality control.

Speeding things up

Our next challenge is ramping up production.  Up until this point, we haven’t put pressure on the time issue because our number 1 priority is quality.  We are going to have a conversation this weekend with our fabricators about how we can start to speed things along.

We are going to be shipping pens in order of when you placed your pledge.  Yes, this will take time.  Yes, you are the most patient peeps in the world!  We are all hoping that this will start to move faster.

The Survey

We are going to be sending out a survey to collect your shipping address very soon.  We have to send all of the surveys in one shot.  So please try your best to give us an address that isn’t going to change too soon.

The partay!

We are going to have a little brunch next weekend at our studio in Greenpoint.  You are all invited!  Hopefully we will have a chance to meet a bunch of you who are in the area and we can say a big THANK YOU in person.

Where : 1205 Manhattan Ave. Suite 214  Brooklyn, NY

When : Sunday, November  5 from 11AM-2PM (we'll be hanging out for the afternoon)

EDIT: Sunday, February 5 from 11AM-2PM

We obviously won’t have all the pens at that time, but if you were one of the first 310 to have pledged.  You can pick your pen up in person.  Otherwise we will ship it to you.

Please RSVP to this party in the survey so we know how much food items we need.

Yes, there will be food items!

How do I know if I’m in the first 310?
Great question!  If you ordered a pen in the first day and a half of the campaign, you are in the first 310.

Tea with backers

For those of you who pledged for this reward, we will be having tea with backers in person or on Skype.

Here is a link to sign up for tea:

You are welcome to come to our studio or we can meet you if you are in NYC.  If it is skype, please put your skype name in your time slot!

If you got one of these, you are in for a treat.  (or at least we think so.)  More on that in the survey.

Ok that was a lot of logistical info.  Thank you everyone. Thank you if you are awake.  You look nice in those jammies.

You will be receiving surveys tomorrow. Sleep tight if you are in this part of the world.

hugs and other drugs,

Hey, can you tell me how they're going to ship? It's easier for me to get FedEx/UPS at one location and US mail at another. Thanks!

Thanks for the insight Jussi! Hopefully you're right. :)

In production, there is a term called "ramp-up". This means that once you've sorted out the process, you start to gradually increase the production rate, while monitoring quality and other issues, until you've hit your optimum pace.
We're obviously right at the start of ramp-up now. I believe that barring any CNY mishaps, we may reasonably expect the productiont to increase quite noticeably over the next several weeks.

This is good news. Glad to hear that you guys are getting some quality pens out of the manufacturer. It's been quite a long road to get here for you guys. Looking forward to getting my pen. I was at the end of the line of backers, unfortunately.

Any idea how many pens they'll be producing each week?

I'm just trying to do some math. It took you guys about a month to get 310 pens. That comes out to about 78 pens per week. At that rate, it will take about a year to get the pens out to all 4,000+ backers. What are your thoughts on this?

Also, I'm just curious as to why you didn't use an American manufacturer right there in NYC so that you could oversee the process from start to finish right from the get-go. Another company (Kara's Customs) is making a Hi-Tec C Pen with an estimated delivery of March. I didn't back their Kickstarter because I didn't see it, but buyers can preorder from their site and have the pen in about 6-8 weeks from now. They're doing all of their own manufacturing in-house so I know it can be done here in the States. I'm just curious as to why you chose foreign manufacturers where the quality couldn't be more closely monitored.

I commend your efforts and am glad that the project is finally taking shape and that the pens are looking good so far but as I'm seeing from lots of other Backers, it's getting a little bit frustrating. I was enjoying the process but now it seems that every update is just another delay, another setback, another week of "we're running measurements" or "hopefully, this or that."

I'm still looking forward to the pen and think it will be a really great product. Thanks for the update. Can't wait to get it.

"Calm down folks, clearly this was intended to be February"
Clearly. They've done such a great job with dates to this point we must give them the benefit of the doubt. It must be Feb, there's no way it would stretch out until August. Is there?

I am backer #250. Hopefully I can get mine in the first batch. But unlikely, if backers ahead of me ordered more than one....

Calm down folks, clearly this was intended to be February; November 5th wasn't a Sunday in 2011, nor will it be in 2012. Also, Feb. 5th would be "next weekend." Perhaps this was originally drafted in the fall, before the manufacturing issues reared up.
