Personal Body Unit Index - New Project on Kickstarter

Use your body to measure things!

Hope you've been having a great summer!

Today we launched a new project on Kickstarter and we wanted you to be the first to know about it.

Personal Body Unit Index is a meticulously designed poster to sharpen your internal sense of scale.

The poster features a series of diagrams of the body in 17 useful positions for measuring things which relate in scale to the human body.

We made Personal Body Unit Index to help us enhance our internal sense of scale, so we are less dependent on traditional measuring devices.

We're really excited about this new project and hope you are too.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, we really appreciate your support on projects.

Love as always,

Che-Wei + Taylor CW&T

Pen Type-B on Kickstarter

It’s here!!! PEN TYPE_B !!!

Hi original backers!

Thank you for coming along with us on what was a life-changing adventure when we launched Pen Type-A. It was the 6th most funded campaign on Kickstarter at the time. It completely changed our lives. We’re still a tiny studio of just 2 people and we’re still trying to make good things that we can appreciate for a long time.

Since we completed our first campaign, we got married, went back to school/work at MIT Media Lab, and had a baby boy. Right now we’re in San Francisco for 2 more months finishing an artist residency at Pier 9 (making some super fun stuff). We’ve got a serious backlog of exciting projects we’re hoping to launch in the coming months/years, so stay tuned

We are super excited to finally have Pen Type-B on Kickstarter! It’s been a long 4 years of tweaking, testing, waiting, and contemplating every detail of this pen.

This is the last pen we will EVER design.

We launched our campaign this morning, not expecting to get funded so quickly. So we’re funded...hooray! It’s happening! Still...we’ll never forget you guys and wanted to let you know about this. We’re really proud of this design, and think you’d be the ones to truly appreciate it.

If you don’t need another pen, no worries! We’ll be back with a non-pen related project soon.

We’re looking forward to sharing more adventures with you all again!

Stay Toasty (if you're in the northern hemisphere)

The time has finally come that we get to write this email. We can't believe it's true. But yes, it is. All the pens have shipped!

As tough as the past year has been, we wouldn't have done it any other way, or with any other people (that's YOU we're talking about). We grit our teeth while defining and hanging on to what means the most to us and our work. There is no better way to learn and grow.

Pen Type-A started off as a thing we wanted for ourselves. Normally it stays like that. It was a huge surprise when over 4,000 of you wanted a Pen Type-A too. So thank you. Seriously. Thank YOU! and thank you kickstarter for being such awesome game-changers.

Pen Type-A made in the USA

We are very proud to announce the launch of a new line of Pen Type-A that is made in the USA. Over the past few months we have been working closely with and learning about the capabilities of our new manufacturers in Vermont.

The new fabrication process requires some of the most hi-tech manufacturing equipment we've ever seen. It is inspiring to see machinists at work with these tools. Operating them is an art in itself. And the pride they take in every step of the process is inspiring.

The newest version of Pen Type-A has some pretty cool modifications and improvements. Changes include a locking gasket in the base of the sleeve so that the pen doesn't fall out when turned upside-down. The ruler now has a matte glass bead blasted finish. There is also a flexible rubber pocket at the base of the sleeve to hug the tip when the pen is not in use so it doesn't clog up.

Here's a pic of what it now looks like (more info here):

They are for sale here :

Pen Type-A comes with a lifetime guarantee. So if there is ever something wrong with it that is a result of some manufacturing defect, please let us know and we will repair or replace it. This pen is meant to last for a very long time and the idea of us cluttering your lives with extra junk you don't love makes our stomachs turn.

So please, get this only if you love it or know someone who will. It will last longer than you will (of course with replacement cartridges), so be prepared to pass it down for generations.

This is not an impulse buy. It's a serious one. Serious but with a smile.

what's happened with that old manufacturer ?

The Pen Type-A saga is not fully over for us. We still have a few pretty hefty loose ends to tie up. Including settling a dispute with our old manufacturer, who as many of you pointed out about a month ago launched a pen company to sell a design that bares an uncanny resemblance to ours. We don't take this matter lightly. And we want you to know that we are doing everything we can to set things straight. We will update you as things move forward.

what's next?

A lot of you have been asking...

Last last weekend we were over at Maker Faire NYC showing some fun rideable objects that we've been working on. If you're curious and want to find out more please stay in touch.

We use Instagram lots and twitter not lots. But here are our handles:

your drawings

this has probably been the most rewarding part of the experience for us. so thank you!

check out your drawings here :

don't be shy, submit here :

still no pen? ARG$^%&*&^%*&%$

If you have not received a pen, or if there is anything wrong with it please write to us and let us know. We want to make sure that everyone who supported this project is scribbling away.

International orders can take up to 6 weeks to arrive. The USPS tracking update makes it seem like it's in Chicago forever. However, it should magically pop-up in your mailbox. If you have any worries write to us!

your postcards

Half of your drawings on postcards were sent out a couple weeks ago. We are making/sending more as we make them. These have evolved into a pretty fun project over the past year. We decided to write some small pieces of software to generate friends, animals + sandwiches and are using a lasersaur with a Pen Type-A mod as a glorified drawing machine.

Thank you. You were splendid company on this adventure, keeping us grounded and on our tippy toes.

the adventure continues ...

Hey Backers!

Lots of you saw the pen featured on today. It's a stainless steel pen in a ruler sleeve that bears an uncanny resemblance to Pen Type-A. Thanks for your emails and messages bringing this to our attention. This was a complete surprise to us when we saw it. Just to be clear, we are not affiliated with those pens in any way, except that we immediately recognized Allen from the images on their site. He is the US half of the two person duo we hired to manufacture the pens in China. (He hugged us when we last saw him!)

We’re looking into this and we’ll update you when we find out more.

Thanks for all your support. The adventure continues!

Remaining pens will be shipping out shortly (early next week).  We did have a small delay with the screws we've been waiting for.  The family run Vermont shop had a family emergency, but they're back on their feet and screws are shipping to us in the morning.  (We've all had a tough week, but theirs was definitely the worst. Our thoughts are with them).  Once we have all those screws, we'll assemble them and ship them out.

lots of love

time for sleep
