Hi! I'm Nicola, daytime scientist and evening maker. I run Cutie and the Feast as my evening hustle but by day I work as a researcher aiming to improve health by improving clinical trials.
I've always loved science, so much so that I've got a PhD in biochemistry! I also love art, illustration and all things cute so if I can combine the two then even better.
As I was telling my husband about another science illustration idea he thought I said the periodic table of elephants and so the pin series idea was born. It's funny how these things happen isn't it?
I've designed a super cute elephant holding a charm of an element from the periodic table and now I need your help to bring it to life in enamel pin form.
There are 16 different elements/elephants to choose from. You can choose any combination of these or the creativity and curiosity pin and will be asked which ones you'd like in a survey at the end of the campaign.
- 34mm in diameter
- Hard enamel, in a coordinating plating (gold, silver or rose gold)
- Solid, glitter or glow in the dark fill
- Matching acrylic charm
- Rubber clutch
- Coordinating backing card with fun science facts
- Scroll down for full details of each elephant.
These pins are extra special because they will come with a tiny laser cut acrylic charm denoting the element including its name, symbol, atomic number and atomic mass.
Love cute elephants but not into science? We've got you covered. Using acrylic charms instead of enamel keeps the manufacturing costs down and that means that you'll be able to choose an alternative charm to go with your pin.
In addition to the elephants I've also released the "everyday magic" pin, because that's what science is!
Science is for everyone! All children are scientists, they are curious and creative and they explore the world around them to discover its everyday magic.
With curiosity and creativity we can all find a bit of magic in everyday. You will be able to choose this pin as an option in the survey at the end of the campaign.
This pin is going to look super special with black rainbow glitter and high polish gold plating.
Over the course of the campaign there has been enough funding to unlock the super fun lanyard. Thank you! You can add a lanyard onto any pledge for £4 or can choose one of the rewards that already includes the lanyard.
You can also add on a set of three foil embossed pencils, packaged in a test tube. The pencils are navy, pink and gold and embossed in gold with either "curiosity", "creativity" or everyday magic". Pencils can be added onto any pledge for £5.
As well as the enamel pins I've also designed some acrylic jewellery that plays on the periodic table of elements combined with a colour chart. For each element I've chosen a coordinating colour that I think best represents that element.
The necklace is a play on the saying that you see pink elephants when you are drunk, each necklace has a tiny charm at the back with the chemical formula for ethanol.
You can get hold of these pieces in a bundle offer with or without pins and there's a limited number of brooch only rewards.
Want to make your own bundle?
No problem at all, drop me a message with what you would like in it and I'll add it as a new reward option.
The minimum order for enamel pins is pretty high and so Kickstarter is a great way for me to test the market to find out what pins people like best before ordering them.
As a backer you get early access to all pin designs at a reduced price per pin, you'll also get extra treats in with your pledge as a thank you from me for being awesome!
The campaign will end on the 1st August, Kickstarter will only charge your account at the end of the campaign and only if the campaign meets it's funding goal.
Here are the extra treats that you'll get depending on how much you've pledged. Check out the project updates for photos of some of the extras. These are kickstarter bonuses which means they will be shipped free with your reward!
I'm also on Etsy

Risks and challenges
I'll be working with a manufacturer to produce the pins and so there may be delays which are out of my control. I have worked with this manufacturer before which does reduce the risks. The estimated delivery date is also the latest date taking into account potential delays.
If there are any issues during production I will keep you updated and let you know if things are on track for the estimated shipping dates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
