Kings and Queens of the world,
My name is Curtiss King and I am an artist/producer from an independent label called Black Cloud Music based out of the Inland Empire in Southern California. I'm currently using KickStarter to fund the physical release of my debut album "Atychiphobia" (The Fear of Failure) and an accompanying DVD documentary "Kings + Queens" (Directed by Pasqual Gutierrez)
Since 2003 Curtiss King has been able to build a name for himself through independently releasing numerous free albums as an artist, countless collaborations as a producer, and via his strong DIY viral marketing through his social networks. As an artist he has collaborated with the likes of Ab-Soul, Noa James, Bishop Lamont, Willie B, Stevie Crooks, and many more. Most recently after he embarked on a 97 day straight journey, he was invited to perform at the Paid Dues Festival 2012 along with acts such as Wu-Tang, Kendrick Lamar, DJ Quik, Odd Future, Dipset, Living Legends and more.
Curtiss King is most noted for his relentless work ethic and "Do It Yourself" mentality due to the fact that he produces, video directs/edits, graphic designs, and creates his own content from the ground up.
However in light of all of his accomplishments Curtiss King remains a humble man of the people. He describes his debut "Atychiphobia" as therapy for the lost and the soundtrack for the found. When making this project he set out to make music that was reminiscent of the feel good vibes of the 90s but with a 2012 spin. On "Atychiphobia" Curtiss finds himself making the most therapeutic and most relateable music he has been able to create yet in his career. Songs for the single mom taking the bus to drop her kids off and go to work and zone out to. Songs for the young man in a hospital bed for weeks just looking to close his eyes and get away. Songs for the college student struggling through her last week of finals and in desperate need of a song to push her to the finish line. Songs that speak to the soul because they were made from his soul.
Also included with the release of his album will be a short documentary dvd on Curtiss King's life, music, and journey to Paid Dues entitled "Kings + Queens" directed, edited, and shot by Pasqual Gutierrez.
In this microwave era of Hip Hop music where materialism, misogyny, and half baked compositions flood the airwaves, somehow Dwan Howard has emerged on the scene as an irresistible and well prepared home cooked meal. Better known by his stage name Curtiss King, the son of a college professor dad and author/pianist mom has managed to make a respectable name for himself in Southern Cali by consistently going against the grain as a rapper and producer. Growing up a very shy young man particularly when attending Curtiss Middle school, he found ways to combat his insecurities by listening to music and getting lost in 90s sitcoms, hence the name: Curtiss KING. Inspired by the likes of Outkast, Sade, 2pac, Kanye West, Cameo, Zapp and Roger, Earth Wind and Fire, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, & 80s synths, he is anything but your typical rapper. Originally from Carson and now residing in the Inland Empire, Curtiss King embodies the feel good essence of the 90s with a refreshingly raw and inspiring contemporary edge. Rapping since the age of 17 and producing since 18, he found out very early that without the proper funds and support he would have to be a jack of all trades to get his goals accomplished. From the beginning, with the help of a high school friend, Youtube, and a library card, Curtiss King set out to teach himself how to produce, engineer & write his own records, edit his own videos, design his own album covers, script his own websites, and build his brand from the ground up.
