About this project
Another new album from Curtis Eller's American Circus
The Task Before Us: Welcome to the official fundraising headquarters of Curtis Eller's American Circus! In uncertain times such as these, the citizens of an anxious nation inevitably turn to the dulcet tone of the five-string banjo to ease their troubled minds. Eller and the band are diligently at work on a new full-length phonograph recording to guide you through the dark and dire days ahead.
Who is The American Circus: Curtis Eller is a gifted and prolific songwriter who's banjo driven songs describe a dreamlike vision of American history where all points in time have collapsed into one. A twenty-year show business veteran, the iconoclastic banjo player and his inelegant backing band, The American Circus, have developed a devoted international following based on dynamic, untamed live performances and a disquieting catalog of curious magnetic recordings. The years have found them engaged in a relentless string of one-nighters on the club, theatre and festival stages of a dozen countries on both sides of the Atlantic.
The heart of the intrepid ensemble comprises Dana Marks and Virginia Scare on harmony vocals, Hugh Crumley on bass and Jack Fleishman on drums. They're a well intentioned, if misguided, bunch of kids. One can only imagine the string of imprudent decisions that led them to cast their lot in with Eller but their fates are now sealed. http://www.curtiseller.com
A Bigger Bigtop for Darker Days: For this recording, the core of The American Circus will augment their indelicate, rock & roll rhythms with a tempestuous cloud of horns and a graceless choir of backsliders in their quest to bring Eller's historically evocative compositions to vivid cinematic life.
A New Platter for the Hit Parade: Fans of past recordings have come to expect a hallucinatory, historical landscape populated by corrupt 19th century politicians, faded Hollywood stars, two-bit prize fighters and frequent, inexplicable visits from Elvis Presley and Richard Nixon. The forthcoming batch of songs finds the cities of the United States in flames and her streets red with blood, as the specter of the 1967 Detroit riot casts a hazy shadow on our young century. The lyrics read like ransom notes painstakingly assembled from an alphabet clipped from depression-era broadsheets. Sharpen that phonograph needle and get ready for another strange and unsettling platter! http://curtiseller.bandcamp.com
The Artwork and Packaging: We are thrilled to welcome return of illustrator and printmaker, Jamie B. Wolcott, who's mysterious and compelling artwork will once again grace the album cover. http://www.jamiebwolcott.com
The Rewards: Rewards for project backers range from digital and physical copies of the album to illustrated lyric books and t-shirts exclusive to Kickstarter. You may even become the proud owner of one Curtis Eller's banjos if you pony up enough dough.
Risks and challenges
In addition to the challenges inherent in the production of any rock & roll album, Curtis Eller's American Circus seems destined to endure strange and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Recent shows have been marked by dog attacks, heat stroke, power blackouts, fire alarms and stage injuries too numerous to catalog. They relish this opportunity to retreat to the relative safety of the recording studio.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
